Because we have the flooded rice fields around here... we have the frogs too during this season. They sing to us all night long making quite a racket and they hurriedly plop into the rice field when Choco walks along field edges. There are great big toads... brown ugly things. And there are tiny green frogs... those are cute... Cute if you consider frogs to be cute.
Tetsu doesn't like frogs much. Occasionally a frog will get into the house and I will have to scoop it up and put it outside before the cats find it. It does no good to ask Tetsu. He won't touch a frog.
The other day a daring frog hopped up to Choco's doghouse and Choco promptly gobbled it...
"Oooh! Yuck! Choco! You killed a frog!"
But Choco hadn't gobbled it down and I guess the frog jumping around in her mouth so surprised Choco that she spit it out and looked at it suspiciously. The poor frog had been traumatized but was still jumping so I acted as a frog savior and took it over to a hydrangea bush.
"I don't know how you can bear to pick up those frogs. They are wet and cold and GREEN!"
The next time you see a frog, please remember...

I have a large stuffed frog sitting beside my living room chair where I work. I call him Friedrich and he does not tear up stuff like Earl Grey my cat. He has assured me that he is not a handsome prince in disquise (hahaha). I never had but one stuffed animal as a child, so I enjoy them now in my old age.
ReplyDeleteYou know that frogs are symbols of good fortune in Japan. Often at Shinto shrines,they sell small china or metal frogs to keep in the purse. As frog is called 'kaeru' in Japanese, which is the same sound as 'return home', frogs are said to make the money you spend return to your purse.
ReplyDeleteDo you remember, a long time ago, before mobile phones, there was a (NTT) telephone company promotion called a 'Frog Call', 'kaeru call'. The meaning was that you should call home when you had reached your station to prepare the family of your imminent arrival home, i.e. tell the wife to have dinner ready!!!

ReplyDeleteWonderful photos of the "kaeru"!. They brought a "blast to the past" to when I stayed with my grandparents as a second grader...Those little green frogs are so cute! Such abundant wildlife in the Japanese countryside...Do you have fireflies there in the summer?

I am with Tetsu. UGH! I don't like frogs. We have a pond by our house when we get a lot of rain (like this June). They are so LOUD at night that I have trouble sleeping. I will try to remember your acronym and maybe that will lull me to sleep.

ReplyDeleteI've always liked frogs. They are just so cute! I used to love to catch them (yes, I released them). I have a stuffed red frog that says F R O G, for Fully Rely On God. I got it from a secret sister many years ago. He 'protects' our guest bedroom.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Queenie's comments. At our last house we put in a small pond and enjoyed the early summer singing of the frogs and toads. The more on mosquito patrol the better. Good thing Choco didn't catch the brown toads. The mucus on them is toxic.

LOVE the frogs. We call them Spring Peepers and we must not have as many as other comments suggest. The sound at night lulls me to sleep.

We have a concrete frog in the garden by our front sidewalk, 'pointed' towards the front door - supposedly that keeps income flowing into the house? I don't know the origin of the story; the frog came out of a friend's moving-out garden cleanup several years ago.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, just the occasional toad, I think not enough water for frogs nearby (there's water in the oak trees in the neighborhood...just enough to provide mosquito hatcheries...).
