More and More Thoughts in 2018

Choose  --  "I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on Your laws."  Psalm 119:30

1/1/2019  —  Psalms 119:37

“Keep me from paying attention to what is worthless; be good to me, as you have promised.”
Psalm 119:37 —  Good News Bible

This seems like a good prayer to start the year...  keep me focused on the important things in life!  I really do waste too much time on this IPhone, on TV, on worrying, on grumbling.

Now in my sixties do I have the time to fritter away?  The time God has given to me needs to be used for good, for HIM, for the children He has created and loves.

Keep me focused dear Lord!

12//31/2018 —  1 Corinthians 10:12

“Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.”
1 Corinthians 10:12  --  Message Bible

Be careful when judging someone.  It is so easy to think that I would never make a similar unworthy decision...  yet that is just falsely believing in my own power (or will-power).  Someone devoted to God also devotes herself to relying on Him through prayer and worship.

12/30/2018  —  Matthew 6:1

““Examine your motives to make sure you’re not showing off when you do your good deeds, only to be admired by others; otherwise, you will lose the reward of your heavenly Father.”
Matthew 6:1  —  The Passion Translation

God knows every move I make, every thought I take. It doesn’t matter who else notices. And God hates fake humbleness!  Seeking approval and appreciation from others proves that I’m forgetting who I am working for!  I only need God’s approval and I actually already have that!

12/29/2018  —  Matthew 25:23

“The master answered, ‘You did well. You are a good and loyal servant. Because you were loyal with small things, I will let you care for much greater things. Come and share my joy with me.’”
Matthew 25:23  — New Century Version

In trying to be God’s servant, I need to put my own plans and schedule aside.  I need to be willing to do things that get little or no recognition. I need to complete the task given to me and not give up.

Hmm...  not give up.  I’ve been thinking about my One Word for 2019.  In the past I’ve had REACH and WALK and CHOOSE. This past week I keep coming back to sticking with things, not giving up...  is there a One Word there?  Faithful doesn’t seem right.  Loyal has a different meaning in my mind.  Persevere?  Is that even in the Bible?

12/28/2018  —  John 13:15

“I have set the example, and you should do for each other exactly what I have done for you.”
John 13:15 —  Contemporary English Version

It actually should be very simple. Do what Jesus did.

Jesus was loving. Then love.  Jesus was a servant to the people. Then serve. Jesus stayed close to God. Then talk to God daily.

The movement of WWJD is still a good one to follow.

12/27/2018  —  Ecclesiastes 11:4

“He who watches the wind [waiting for all conditions to be perfect] will not sow [seed], and he who looks at the clouds will not reap [a harvest].”
ECCLESIASTES 11:4  —  Amplified Bible

I like the principle that things don’t have to be perfect for there to be results. God uses all conditions and expecting perfection, even evaluating next to perfection is going to be a lost cause. Waiting for perfection also is an excuse for procrastination.

Good enough and prayer will get more done than perfection.

12/26/2018  —  Galatians 6:9

“Don't get tired of helping others. You will be rewarded when the time is right, if you don't give up.”
Galatians 6:9 — Contemporary English Version

It is easy to give up especially when it seems nothing I do is producing results.

“This is a waste of time. My small effort is just a drop in the bucket.”

Another reason for giving up is when I don’t feel appreciated.

“What’s the point? No one notices or even cares!”

But aren’t the above attitudes all about ME?  Not about the issue, not about God’s mission?

Keep on keeping on.

12/25/2018  —  2 Timothy 2:4

“For every soldier called to active duty must divorce himself from the distractions of this world so that he may fully satisfy the one who chose him.”
2 Timothy 2:4  —  The Passion Testament

I am enlisted to Christ to do His work. I really don’t have much choice in what work I do not when I want to do it. That is the heart of a servant to serve on the master’s schedule and do his will.

Just because MY plans are disrupted does not give me allowance to be irritated huffy. Tanya, don’t get so busy with your own life that you have no time for Jesus’ life.

12/23/2018  —  Mark 10:43

“You are to lead by a different model. If you want to be the greatest one, then live as one called to serve others.”
Mark 10:43  —  The Passion Testament

Actually today my heart isn’t in Bible reading nor getting a message from God from this passage.

I have prayed and prayed for John to warm up to us but he continues to bark and growl and snarl. It looks like we are near the end of our rope which is NOT the conclusion I wanted. I want him to be part of our family and to be loved and to love us to the end of his life. We are talking about returning him and that makes me feel like such a failure.

Right now all I am is John’s servant. Is that what God means? And I’m not the only one making the decision. Tetsu has his opinions too. We are not in unity about this issue yet. I feel like a failure in marriage too.

12/22/2018  —  Proverbs 15:19

“The way of the lazy is as a hedge of thorns, But the path of the upright is a highway.”
Proverbs 15:19  —  New American Standard Bible

I may not be lazy in everyday busyness but I can be marked lazy in concern with relationships.

Too lazy to write comments on blog friends blogs... too lazy to send emails to long time friends...  too lazy to try and get together with friends.

Commitments take time and energy. I don’t want to lose those important bonds due to my laziness.

12/20/2018  —  Ephesians 3:20

“Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energizes you.”
Ephesians 3:20 —  The Passion Translation

I know with my heart that God answers prayer but too often my head gets in the way and I doubt what God can or is willing to do.  Does it matter or not whether I pray?  Isn’t God going to do what He wants anyway?

Making my meager requests to God enabled me to see how much MORE He does for me and the knowledge of that power and love for me energizes me even more!

12/19/2018  —  Philippians 1:9-11

“I continue to pray for your love to grow and increase beyond measure, bringing you into the rich revelation of spiritual insight in all things. This will enable you to choose the most excellent way of all—becoming pure and without offense until the unveiling of Christ. And you will be filled completely with the fruits of righteousness that are found in Jesus, the Anointed One—bringing great praise and glory to God!”
Philippians 1:9-11 —  The Passion Translation

There are specifics we can make when praying for someone.

1) Pray for the person to grow in love. For themselves, for the people around them, for God.
“...I pray for your love to grow...”

2) Pray for the person to make the right choices.  “...this will enable you to choose the most excellent way...”

3) Pray for the person to keep close to God’s path.  “...becoming pure and without offense...”

4) Pray for the person to live a life that brings glory to God.  “...bringing great praise and glory to God...”

And pray this for myself!!!

12/18/2018  —  Matthew 9:29

“Then Jesus put his hands over their eyes and said, “You will have what your faith expects!””
Matthew 9:29  —  The Passion Translation

I have found this new Bible translation...  the Passion Translation.  It is pretty clear.

And I may have found my One Word for next year...  it has been on my mind lately...

My faith determines the completion of God’s plans for me.  Expect much.

12/17/2018  —  Psalm 27:13

“I am expecting the Lord to rescue me again, so that once again I will see his goodness to me here in the land of the living.”  —  Psalm 27:13

I am praying to God.  I am waiting for God.  Am I expecting God to work for me or am I thinking I'd better work out something on my own and hope for the best?

Though I may find myself struggling again and again, I must expect God's hand again and again in my life.  He will work for me because He loves me.

12/16/2018  —  2 Corinthians 1:8-9

“My friends, I want you to know what a hard time we had in Asia. Our sufferings were so horrible and so unbearable that death seemed certain. In fact, we felt sure we were going to die. But this made us stop trusting in ourselves and start trusting God, who raises the dead to life.”
2 Corinthians 1:8-9

God does the impossible. He raises the dead to life!  If he can do that physically, then he can bring back mental fatigue, marital crashes, career terminations, health failure.

When we hit a dead end, we know that God can turn things around for us if we don’t give up hope and keep our faith in the possibilities of God’s miracles.

12/15/2018  —  1 Peter 1:6-7

“You are extremely happy about these things, even though you have to suffer different kinds of trouble for a little while now. The purpose of these troubles is to test your faith as fire tests how genuine gold is. Your faith is more precious than gold, and by passing the test, it gives praise, glory, and honor to God. This will happen when Jesus Christ appears again.”
1 Peter 1:6-7 —  God’s Word

So I know that the delays, even the problems are the tools that God uses to strengthen me and to make me realize that my faith isn’t just something I put on on Sunday morning. I am depending on God’s guidance, not merely robotically riding on a rail that leads to Him.  The exercising of my faith, through doubts, through problems, through sadness, these exercises are what will make me all the more joyful when I see Jesus face to face.

12/14/2018  —  Habakkuk 2:3

“It is not yet time for the message to come true, but that time is coming soon; the message will come true. It may seem like a long time, but be patient and wait for it, because it will surely come; it will not be delayed.”
Habakkuk 2:3 —  New Century Version

God fulfills His promises but not always when we expect. A delay doesn’t mean no. The delay is teaching me to trust, to depend on my faith, to mature.  And the delay is only from MY point of view, not from God’s. His timing is always perfect.

12/13/2018  —  James 1:8

“A person who has doubts is thinking about two different things at the same time and can’t make up his mind about anything.”
James 1:8  —  God’s Word

This is SO a picture of me!  I’m always thinking two things (or more) at one time. It is so much easier to let others make the decisions probably because I just don’t have strong preferences either way.

My word for this year was “Choose” meaning to choose what is right, to choose God’s way. Although it was in the back of my mind, I still allowed others to make my choices for me.

I don’t want to doubt God’s goodness in my life at all times. In such faith there is no such thing as a wrong choice.

12/10/2018  —  Matthew 5:24, 25

“So if you are about to place your gift on the altar and remember that someone is angry with you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. Make peace with that person, then come back and offer your gift to God.”
Matthew 5:23-24  —  Contemporary English Version

God values our inter-relationships with others so much that He tells us to fix the relationship before going to Him in worship (though I’d say He wants us to come to Him first in prayer.)

I can think of situations that didn’t come to renewal even after speaking with the person... but the healing is God’s job.  Anyway, I probably need to apply this command more to my own petty disagreements with Tetsu. God wants His children to love each other.

12/8/2018  —  Matthew 5:8

“Happy are those who work for peace; God will call them his children!”
Matthew 5:9  —  Good News Bible

God wants us to value relationships. We are put here to love and if instead we cut ties, hold grudges, divorce we are not holding to His commandments.

I want peace. We ALL want peace!  I want to be peaceful.  I think most people want to be at peace with who they are and their situation whether it is in a “peaceful” setting or not. (Some people like noise.)

God is saying to be person who WORKS for peace. A peace-maker. Someone who makes the effort, someone who is first to apologize when an apology is due.

I guess I can always start with the small husband-wife arguments...  sometimes those are the hardest of all.

12/7/2018  — Proverbs 28:13

“You will never succeed in life if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give them up; then God will show mercy to you.”
Proverbs 28:13  —  Good News Bible

Recognizing how I let God down is the first step to learning to obey Him.  God holds me accountable no matter how I try to convince myself that someone else is to blame.

But it doesn’t do any good to hang on to my sins with guilt.  God says He forgives. That is enough.  I must forgive myself and go forward.  God steps in to make everything right and good.

12/6/2018  —  Proverbs 23:7

““Come on and have some more,” he says, but he doesn't mean it. What he thinks is what he really is.”
Proverbs 23:7 —  Good News Bible

What does this verse mean?  Is it warning me away from Satan who tricks and deceived? Or is it telling me to be careful of what I think about because my thoughts make me who I am?

I can’t choose the things I see and hear.  Maybe I can’t even choose what thoughts slip into my consciousness.  But I CAN choose what I dwell on...  prideful resentment... gossipy tidbits to dwell on...  worries that I drag out constantly.

Lord, help me to choose wisely, choosing only what brings me closer to you.  In Jesus name, Amen

12/5/2018  —  Matthew 12:36

““I can guarantee that on judgment day people will have to give an account of every careless word they say.”
Matthew 12:36  —  God’s Word

There are some things that need to be said no matter how they may flame the fire...  but there is always God’s timing that needs to be considered before the utterances.

This is true for when passing on information about someone...  my words may have an effect on a situation and I wish I could get into the habit of a quick prayer before I speak...

Today I felt I had to speak up about something slightly inappropriate that happened to me months ago, to the school principal I work with.  The eccentric person in question was approaching school children and I felt the principal should be aware of the odd person’s character.  I didn’t pray about my words...  I hope I am connected enough to God to feel the nudge that made me speak up.

12/4/2018  —  Proverbs 21:20

“Wise people’s houses are full of the best foods and olive oil, but fools waste everything they have.”
Proverbs 21:20  —  New Century Version

We live is such a wasteful society.  Although I consider Japan to be more waste conscious than other countries, I still let abundance lead me into wastefulness.

The added, unnecessary things in my house, the added, unnecessary inches on my waist...  they prove that I use and consume more than I should.

Tithing, saving, enjoying life...  it is so easy to let the three aspects become unbalanced.  It is dishonest to keep from God what belongs to Him.  It is foolish not to save for the future.  It is a waste, a WASTE, to not live life to the fullest with the resources in which God has blessed us!

11/30/2018  —  Mark 6:36

“Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.””
Mark 6:36

God gave me my problem for me to deal with it. If He didn’t want me to learn something, to make a difference somewhere, He would have given the problem to someone else.

It does no good wanting someone else to deal with my problem... wishing I could ‘send it away’ so that I don’t have to think about it...

God is telling me to deal with it and await His instructions.

11/29/2018  —  Mark 6:41-42

“Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and, looking up to heaven, he thanked God for the food. He divided the bread and gave it to his followers for them to give to the people. Then he divided the two fish among them all. All the people ate and were satisfied.”
Mark 6:41-42  —  New Century Version

Rick Warren says that if you’ve got a problem, then great!  You are a candidate for a miracle!  Every miracle starts with a problem.  Recognizing the problem is the first step, then asking God to do great things and solve the problem is the next step and finally trusting God to do so is the final step.  (Well, actually thanking God for the miracle is the final step.)

My problem today...  John’s behavior.

My prayer...  Lord, I can’t change John. He needs Your touch, Your calming presence.  Help me to learn how to relate to him so that we can all live happily... together.

My action...  to relax and give it time, to night get upset or stressed out. To start each day a new.

Thanksgiving...  thank You Lord that we are all in Your circle of love and plan. Thank You for this dog You’ve entrusted to us.

11/27/2018  —  Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for GOD ’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all...
Proverbs 3:5-6  —  Message Bible

Trust is the basis of faith, but trusting is so hard.  Do I just stop thinking for myself?  God gave me a brain didn’t He?

Do I just blithely cling to the promise that God will work everything out for my good and wait out the problems and the sadness?  The Bible seems to say so...

Hearing God’s voice?  Well, there is this time in the morning with the Bible...  there are all the Sundays worshipping at church yet I don’t feel the direct message from God... maybe a conglomeration of nudges and hidden blazes...

Lead me Lord.  Every so often I need the confirmation that You’re in control of my life.  In Jesus name, Amen

11/24/2018  —  2 Corinthians 4:16

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.”
II Corinthians 4:16  —  New King James Version

Being renewed daily involves a little work on my part.  Spending time praying to God and reading His Word.

It does seem that when I’m feeling good that I naturally come to this devotional time, yet when my mood is bleak I feel tired just thinking about talking to God. This is bad strategy on my part!

Praising God daily, just in song or in a worship atmosphere. God uses music to lift me up.

Spending times with other Christians.  When I’m not sure of God’s message to me, it is good to run my interpretation through other believers who are stronger that day than I am...  and I can do the same for them sometime!

11/23/2018  —  Luke 16:9

““I tell you, make friends for yourselves using worldly riches so that when those riches are gone, you will be welcomed in those homes that continue forever.”
Luke 16:9  —  New Century Version

God says that though we can’t take our material goods and money with us when we die, we CAN invest in heaven by using our resources now to bring people to God.

Money that is going to missions, to outreach programs to Bibles and evangelism tracts, that money is well spent and the people’s lives that are changed will be in eternal heaven to welcome us when we arrive.

11/22/2018  —  Hebrews 12:1

“We are surrounded by a great cloud of people whose lives tell us what faith means. So let us run the race that is before us and never give up. We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way and the sin that so easily holds us back.”
Hebrews 12:1

I have no idea what the Bible is telling me to do.  Should I even expect a direct message to my problem and prayer?  I pray, “God, we want to keep John and overcome all the challenges but he needs to change.  We can’t accept his aggressive and dangerous behavior.  How do we decide when to give up?  Is giving up even an option?”

And the Bible verse today says,

“so let us run the race before us and never give up.”

That seems like a clear answer. But in the same verse it says,

“We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way and the sin that so easily holds us back.”

Remove ourselves from the situation that causes fear and anger?  Which way is it Lord?

11/21/2018  —  Jeremiah 1:7

“But the LORD said to me, “Do not say that you are too young, but go to the people I send you to, and tell them everything I command you to say.”
Jeremiah 1:7 —  Good News Bible

I may not be saying that I’m too young, but I often hear myself saying “as I get older...” and it feels like a good excuse for not being able to do things and start new things...

God probably isn’t happy with the excuses we make. “I’m too young.  I’m too old.  I’m not good at speaking.  I live too far away.”

God gives us jobs to do and expects obedience.

11/20/2018  —  2 Corinthians 1:11

“And you can help us with your prayers. Then many people will give thanks for us—that God blessed us because of their many prayers.”
2 Corinthians 1:11  —  New Century Version

My prayers help missionaries and even fellow Christians in my church when they witness and work in other people’s lives. This is a great reason to develop a passionate prayer life as no matter how old, no matter where I am or how incapacitated I make become, I still have a way to make a difference in God’s world... through prayer.

11/18/2018  —  Acts 1:8

“But when the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power. You will be my witnesses—in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world.””
Acts 1:8 —  New Century Version

My Jerusalem is my community.
My Judea is my country.
My Samaria are the around me.
My ‘every part of the world’ are God’s people throughout the world.

I reach out to my community and think how I can show them God’s love.  I reach out to my country, now my adopted country, by being a good stranger in a strange land.  I reach out to other cultures.... hmmm.  By offerings and supporting missionaries?  I reach out to every one else... with prayer I suppose.

11/16/2018  —  Mark 16:15

“And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.”
Mark 16:15  —  New Living Translation

The Great Commission will someday be The Great Completion, and I get to be part of it. Daily I get my mission from God to be His ambassador in this world and He uses me for His work. It is not about me and my pleasure. It is about God’s plan and my role in it.

11/14/2018  —  Galatians 6:9-10

“So let’s not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.”
Galatians 6:9-10 —  Message Bible

The word is “fatigued” or “tired” or “weary”.  And I’m not even tired of doing good!  Just of keeping up!

I have to remember that God sees all the efforts even if they don’t produce results. Right now it is the effort with John which is such a small thing but all my loving, disciplining, giving him treats and long walks and attention and space and whatever else to get him on my side is still met by snarls and growls and bared teeth.

Do we give up on this dog? What does God want us to do?  That little bundle of legs and fur is wearing me thin...

11/13/2018  —  Matthew 6:8

“...Your Father already knows what you need before you ask him.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:8‬ ‭ —  Good News Bible

Worrying is taking responsibility for things God never intended you to have. - Rick Warren

The purpose of prayer is not to inform God about my concerns, it is to ASK Him for help.  God knows it all already therefore the prayer part of our relationship is the training of myself to turn to God.

11/12/2018  —  Jeremiah 33:3

“Call to me and I will answer you. I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.’”
Jeremiah 33:3  —  Message Bible

I spend so much time, even sleepless nights, trying to figure things out. The reasons for this, the best way to do that.

I say I give it to God but I go over it all like a tongue exploring a tooth gap.

There is so much more to faith than just knowing that God is in control.

Lord, I leave Leiya’s wedding all to You.  God guide us to the best way to make John a part of our household.

There!  My greatest concerns this month. Planning a perfect wedding and getting this dog to see us as friends!

11/11/2018  —  Psalms 56:8

“You know how troubled I am; you have kept a record of my tears. Aren't they listed in your book?”
Psalms 56:8  —  Good News Version

I know that God knows my frustrations and worries. I even know that He cares!  But I still take back my anxiety and fret...  I don’t know how NOT to. It is not so easy for me to cast away fears and leave everything to God, but I don’t know why. I feel a failure at even my faith...

11/10/2018  —  Psalms 69:5

“God, you know what I have done wrong; I cannot hide my guilt from you.”
Psalms 69:5  —  New Century Version

I have wasted a lot of time worrying, I have not trusted God to bring about the best in my life.  I have not gone to God first for guidance nor thanked Him for His blessings.

Others may not see the sins I know I have but God knows. And even so, He continues to love me and set aside treasures for me in heaven.

Lord, help me to readily confess my sins and seek You first. In Jesus’ name,  Amen

11/9/2018  —  Hebrews 4:13

“Nothing in all the world can be hidden from God. Everything is clear and lies open before him, and to him we must explain the way we have lived.”
Hebrews 4:13  —  New Century Version

It is rather wonderful and scary that God knows everything, all my thoughts, all my deeds. Ihe knows me even when I can’t explain myself, He knows my heart (good) even when the results don’t coincide.

But He also knows the real side of the self I try to keep from people, the worry, the bitterness, the angry thoughts that I cover up.

When I come before Him I won’t just be able to present Him with my life offerings of love.  He’ll still know the sin and He’ll look on my with pity and forgiveness.

10/27/2018  —  1Corinthians 12:7

“The Spirit's presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all.”
1 Corinthians 12:7  —  Good News Translation

Hopefully God’s Spirit shines through the cracks in my life.  What I do and what I let God use can be made pure and used for God’s plan for His world. It is never my work. It is always God working through me.

10/26/2018  —  1 John 3:16-17

“This is how we’ve come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us. This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for ourselves. If you see some brother or sister in need and have the means to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God’s love? It disappears. And you made it disappear.”
1 John 3:16-17  —  Message Bible

It is so much easier to love Jesus than to love other members of Jesus’ family...  fellow believers...    other church members.

I’m not proud of the fact that we have left churches in unhappy terms, but it has happened. A rift begins, an argument ensues. Both sides are stubborn and the stress of attending church when parties are insincere and plastic makes it impossible to concentrate on God’s Word or on God’s message. At such a time we have actually felt God was calling us to find a new church family where we would be able to praise freely and where our hearts could be healed. Whether we interpreted God’s will correctly or not...  I’m not sure. But I do feel joy again in a new church family.

I thank God for giving us a choice and for blessing our decision.

10/25/2018  —  Ephesians 2:19-22

“That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home.”
Ephesians 2:19-22  —  Message Bible

I like this image of God building a temple with each of us as stones.   As a stone in God’s creation we are each important holding up God’s house, showing the world where to go for salvation. There are different colors and shapes and different places where certain stones need to be used but we are all placed in spots by the master builder.

10/24/2018  —  Ephesians 4:16

“The whole body depends on Christ, and all the parts of the body are joined and held together. Each part does its own work to make the whole body grow and be strong with love.”
Ephesians 4:16  —  New Century Version

Each part, each PERSON in the church has a job to do to fill God’s world with love.

What is my job?  Inside the church building...  to be friendly, greeting people. To be helpful... aiding the wheelchair bound friend, offering English/Japanese skills. Hmmm.  At the moment that’s about it.

In the Christian or in my case the non-Christian community my job is to touch people with God’s love.  I don’t t push, I don’t judge.  I try to be a constant silent witness by cheerfully helping and quietly doing things in Jesus’ name.

I don’t know how effective or ineffective my approach to spreading God’s love around is but I commit my work to God’s use.

10/23/2018  —  Romans 12:5

“so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.”
Romans 12:5  — New Living Testament

I belong to Christ. I belong to the Christian church as a universal whole. I belong (registered) to a family church.  I belong in body weekly, to a local church.

I actively participate with my local church but keep from commitments because I’m not “registered”. It is because of our own hesitancy not the church family’s.  I sometimes feel out outside this church family and I really need to claim my position just because God sees me as part of His family and His church. Human membership means very little to God.

10/22/2018  —  Psalms 139:23-24

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
Psalms 139:23-24  —  New Living Translation

My time with God is for me to listen to God through a few Bible passages, and for God to listen to me through my prayers.

I can understand God’s will through ways besides Bible reading but this is the most direct connection. God understands me without my putting things into words but we need to make clear what my anxious thoughts are, my fears, my priorities.  I guess I need to make my thoughts clear for myself, not for God.

10/21/2018  —  Luke 22:39

“And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.”
Luke 22:39  —  New American Standard Version

Jesus had a custom and a time (morning) and a place (Mount of Olives) to meet with God. He had made a sacred space for His special time.

My corner of the room is not very sacred. I have heard of the movie (or book?) War Room, about a woman’s room made for prayer. How can I make my corner more inviting?  How can my corner become the place to GO?

10/20/2018  —  Mark 1:35

“Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.”
Mark 1:35  —  New Living Translation

Do you have a quiet time?  I do and I don’t.  It isn’t scheduled.  It moves from one place for months to another. It doesn’t involve a lot of praying. (BAD!). I don’t even “open” a Bible.

Everyday after I come back from crosswalk duty, I sit down (like right now) away from Tetsu and away from the TV. This used to be easier when Tetsu was working and I had my days to myself, but now he is asking questions or planning days out or bringing me coffee etc.  My place of choice is in the corner of the Japanese room with Toi and Patora joining me.

A few years ago I started using the You Version app on my iPhone and now I read my Bible on my phone. For a couple of years I just went through the Bible chapter by chapter picking out one verse that spoke to me...    Now I use You Version’s devotionals and read that and then write down my thoughts on one of the day’s verses. (Like today’s).  After highlighting it in You Version, (I love that I can compare translations!) and saving it to Notes, I copy the verse and my thoughts and paste it into my blog page.

I used to set a timer and pray for 5 minutes but it seemed so forced...  Now I just assume that God knows I’m here to speak and learn from Him and that He will speak to me through my thoughts when reading the devotional and Bible passages.

My quiet time is somewhat quiet and devoted to learning God’s will for me.

10/19/2018  —  Psalms 63:1

“God, you are my God. I search for you. I thirst for you like someone in a dry, empty land where there is no water.”
Psalms 63:1  —  New Century Version

This is obviously the attitude I should have when coming to God but I admit that I come to Him demanding, whining, doubting.  I dutifully make my visit or hurriedly spend time with God. I definitely am not panting or thirsting.

God sees this, I’m sure He is disappointed but He is also loving, forgiving and understanding. I pray that daily I mature in this relationship and that when I meet Him face to face my soul will search and cling and exalt.

10/18/2018  —  1 John 4:16

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”
1 John 4:16

If I don’t know what love is, then it is going to be hard anyone else.  The supply of love that I draw on flows from God.  If I feel separated from God’s love, then it is going to be harder to manufacture love for the person beside me.

It is true that when I have a problem I don’t feel loved and I sure don’t feel like loving someone else. Maybe we each need that touch of love from someone when we can’t connect to God’s love. God uses all His children to spread His love around.

10/17/2018  —  1 Timothy 4:12, 15

“...but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith, and purity.

Practise these things and devote yourself to them...”
1 Timothy 4:12, 15

Love can and should be practiced!  And practice makes perfect. Or at least it makes progress.

Loving isn’t always easy.  When I’m in an argument with Tetsu then I have to choose love and make the effort to be loving.

When I’m irritated by a situation and would like to wallow in moodiness, I need to practice showing kindness and love to others.

God will bless my efforts and probably give me more opportunities for practice.

10/16/2018  —   1 John 3:18

“My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.”
1 John 3:18  —  Good News Bible

I know emotions are connected to loving someone, but actions are God’s plan for love. Throughout the Bible God commands us to love and emotions can’t be commanded. I CHOOSE to love. I express my love by what I do. The other person feels my love by my actions.

Sometimes I feel like my expression of love, making something for someone, showing concern, might go unrecognized.  This is when I need to connect more to the person to read his needs and expectations.

10/15/2018  —  Deuteronomy 30:20

“You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life...”
Deuteronomy 30:20  —  New Living Testament

I had a crisis of faith this week, something based on the silliest, stupidest reason. Still, I went into a spiral and closed down for three days.

I am angry at you God for throwing this problem in my face. You cannot expect me to respond to this.  We have set our limits, to do more would be irresponsible. Saying “No” is a legitimate response. Not taking this on is a way for others to take responsibility.

And then I got another request thrown at me from a completely different sector of my life and I said no to that too. And I feel I’ve let people down, I feel pressured to do what I don’t want to do, I feel I’m saying no to obedience to God.

Is everything that comes into my life a direct command from God to squelch my fears or plans and consider all the requests all part of God’s will?  I really feel like I will plummet into despair. If He expects me to do these things we are on different wavelengths!

10/10/2018  —  Proverbs 16:3

“Commit your works to the LORD, And your thoughts will be established.”
Proverbs 16:3

Commit my work...  what is my work... today?  Get the house in order.  Reply to some backed up emails.  Do some swimming.  Do some knitting.  Think about our upcoming visit with Takumi.  Think about Tetsu’s sister’s problem.

I give my day to the Lord. I give next week’s family time to the Lord. I give my doubts and uncertainties about family relationships to the Lord. He will bless all that I commit to Him.

And I most definitely commit Leiya’s wedding plans to the Lord!

God, You know what Leiya and Tony need to make a joyful and meaningful wedding. Please make the pieces of place and time and finances and people and memories fit together for a wonderful start to their new life together.

10/9/2018  —  Proverbs 19:8

“Do yourself a favour and learn all you can; then remember what you learn and you will prosper.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭19:8‬ ‭—  Good News Bible

Learning keeps my brain fit and soft enough for God to teach me new attitudes and new possibilities.  Learning new things opens channels and gives me opportunities. I know... at my age what sort of opportunities do I need or can I try...  but God says it is a way to keep me growing in Him and a way for Him to bless me.

10/8/2018  —  Matthew 5:41

“And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.”
Matthew 5:41  —  new King James Version

It says pretty plainly here that God expects us to go beyond mediocrity. Just getting by is not enough. Just doing what we are paid for is not enough. God expects His servants to put in extra time and extra work.

This work value will make us shine in society and God will reward us with blessings.

Do more.  Take pride and responsibility.  Do everything for God.

10/7/2018  —  Philippians 2:20

“For I have no one else [like him who is] so kindred a spirit who will be genuinely concerned for your [spiritual] welfare.”
PHILIPPIANS 2:20  —  Amplified Bible

In this verse, Paul was speaking of Timothy, but couldn’t it be God speaking of me?

I want to be a kindred spirit of Jesus, being sent into the world and caring about people, loving people in His stead. The reason I am on earth is to love and to learn to love more and more.

I love others because they need loving, and I challenge myself to love others because I need to learn the ways God loves. And God loves the unlovable!!

It works both ways. Loving is necessary for others and for me too.

10/6/2018  —  Romans 5:3

“There’s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we’re hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next...”
Romans 5:3 - Message Bible

My first response is annoyance and the next is worry. Somewhere in there comes resentment and finally resignation.  I’m embarrassed to say that these are my responses to troubles.

It is only later that I remember that God uses my troubles to develop me further for His kingdom. Listening to praise songs reconfirm my faith.

“Oh yeah!  I don’t need to get upset. God loves me. He is working it out. There is always His promise of eternal joy waiting for me. In the meantime I’m learning to grow. “

I wish these thoughts were my FIRST response.

10/5/2018  —  Colossians 3:23

“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”
Colossians 3:23  —  New Living Testament

Leiya and I were having a conversation about getting out of joint when we feel unappreciated.

Why do humans want to feel appreciated?  Is it insecurity?  Is it pride or ego?

Praise is pleasant, being recognized is a nice boost. I suppose there is nothing wrong with receiving the compliments but when we come to expect them...  then the joy is gone and, recognition not forthcoming, dissatisfaction sets in.

It isn’t a pretty attitude and it is best to snap it in the bud!  Seeing the tendency in myself is a start. Reminding myself that all I do is for God is a way to keep my priorities straight.

10/4/2018  2 Timothy 2:15

“Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval...”
2 Timothy 2:15

God sees what I do and appreciates my efforts. No one else might and I shouldn’t let that get me down or cause me to take offense. God says to do my deeds in secret and enthusiastically.

Enthusiastically!!

I may have found a new word to pursue!  Enthusiastic is from Greek and means “inspired by God”.  May all that I do be done enthusiastically!

10/3/2018  —  Proverbs 10:27

“Obey the Lord, and you will live longer. The wicked die before their time.”
Proverbs 10:27  —  Good News Translational

I’m not even sure if my goal is to live a long life. I don’t think so. A healthy life, a meaningful life, an eternal life... these I yearn for, but not length on this earth.

That aside, my eternal life with God will be one of love and obedience and this life on earth is my training ground.  To learn to be obedient I need to be ready to hear God’s messages and willing to step out in faith.

10/1/2018  —  Proverbs 17:22

“Being cheerful keeps you healthy. It is slow death to be gloomy all the time.”
Proverbs 17:22  —  Good News Bible

I am definitely not a gloomy person but I also can say I’m definitely not a barrel of laughs. I’d say I stay on the serious side of things and find it troublesome to seek out fun.

My sister-in-law, Marcy finds things to laugh at in any situation.  She often says she is going to enjoy the life she has and I admire her exuberant qualities.

Laughing, being cheerful, having fun...  I really must make sure these attitudes season my daily life.

9/30/2018  —  Proverbs 11:25

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
Proverbs 11:25  —  New International Version

If I continue to think that what I “own” is what I’ve earned of my own accord, then it is harder to share with others. If I fear that giving away now will inconvenience my future, then I am doubting God will provide my needs.

God wants me to share so that I see His faithfulness in provision. And he wants me to experience of helping others, of making someone else happy.

Giving away also gives ME a re-nourishment for my body and soul.

9/29/2018  —  Psalms 32:3-5

“When I kept it all inside, my bones turned to powder, my words became daylong groans. The pressure never let up; all the juices of my life dried up. Then I let it all out; I said, “I’ll make a clean breast of my failures to GOD.” Suddenly the pressure was gone— my guilt dissolved, my sin disappeared.”
Psalm 32:3-5  —  Message Bible

I can see how my physical and mental health depend a lot on my habits but what about my unconscious attitudes?  If I hide my inner anger or unforgiving heart, if I feel guilt or resentment, well that eats at me and causes health problems mental and otherwise.

How many places in the Bible God says “Give it all to Me.”  He is giving us a way to stay healthy, especially mentally!

Lord help me to forgive people for wrongs I felt have been done.  If I have a hardness of heart against anyone, even if I don’t see it myself, heal me and remove my sin.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen

9/28/2018  —  Proverbs 14:30

“A calm and peaceful and tranquil heart is life and health to the body, But passion and envy are like rottenness to the bones.”
PROVERBS 14:30  —  Amplified Bible

It is easy to worry but why not worship?  It is easy to panic, but why not pray?

Even science can tell us that stress and pressures can compromise our health. Worries cause headaches and ulcers.

Deciding to give all to God is my start to health. Making prayer my default is my commitment to making my body strong. And dwelling on past mistakes, focusing on potential problems and going to have negative implications for God’s gift of my body.

9/27/2018  —  Proverbs 3:5-10

“Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for GOD ’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to GOD! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life! Honor GOD with everything you own; give him the first and the best. Your barns will burst, your wine vats will brim over.”
Proverbs 3:5-10 —  Message Bible

I never noticed how these verses do clearly tell us how to maintain health.

Trust God -
Stay free from worry -
Be humble -
Have integrity -
Be generous -

And then...!  My body will glow with health and I will vibrate with life!!

There is no better medicine, no better diet or exercise regime.

9/26/2018  —  1 Corinthians 6:20

“God paid a great price for you. So use your body to honor God.”
1 Corinthians 6:20  —  Contemporary English Version

God bought skinny bodies, fat bodies, special needs bodies, disfigured bodies, diseased bodies, “ugly” (by whose standards?), beautiful bodies (ditto), new bodies, old bodies, all bodies.

He knew what they were when He made them, He knew what they would become and what challenges they were going to face.  He knows our metabolism and our genetics. And still He asks us to use our bodies to glorify Him.

It is a great challenge and gift. I will love my gift from God.

9/25/2018  —  1 Corinthians 6:19

“You surely know that your body is a temple where the Holy Spirit lives. The Spirit is in you and is a gift from God. You are no longer your own.”
1 Corinthians 6:19  —  Contemporary English Version

I have always disliked all the attention bodies and health is given. I get impatient with people who talk about their health, and go off on fad diets.  It seems a great jolt of egoism to be concentrating so much on one’s body.

But I also take to heart the Biblical truth that my body is a temple of God given to me to use on this earth. I don’t want to fill it with things that might damage it. I want it to look and perform its best. (And honestly, I can be quite vain with make up and contacts and slimming clothing!).

I am God’s vessel and vessels break and grow old but as long as it has a job to do I will keep it ready.

9/24/2018  —  Proverbs 21/5

“Plan carefully and you will have plenty; if you act too quickly, you will never have enough.”
Proverbs 21:5  —  Good News Translation

I’m pretty good about planning my purchases. Planning a budget shouldn’t be that hard...  and God does say He wants us to plan.  Also in this verse God warns against impulse buying...  and while impulse buying sounds bad, buying something that gives an unexpected pleasure sounds rather like joyful living...  balance, balance...  and even an on the spot prayer when something strikes my fancy!

9/22/2018  —  Proverbs 21:20

“There is precious treasure and oil in the house of the wise [who prepare for the future], But a short-sighted and foolish man swallows it up and wastes it.”
PROVERBS 21:20

There is a delicate balance between saying we need to save for the future and saying you can’t take it with you.

My American family is more of the “enjoy it while you have it” type.  My own household is more of the “thriftiness is a virtue” type. I’m sure my American family sees me as a stick in the mud while I wonder what they are going to do if someday things stop coming up roses...

I want to be wise about the treasures I’ve been entrusted with but I don’t want to put my trust in just the money I’ve saved. God will supply in uncertain times but God also wants me to be responsible and accountable.

9/21/2018  —  Proverbs 3:9-10

“Honor the LORD with your wealth And with the first fruits of all your crops (income); Then your barns will be abundantly filled And your vats will overflow with new wine.”
PROVERBS 3:9-10

I’m embarrassed to say that I do bargain with God and I do make excuses.

“God, I am giving You 10% of what I myself make, the rest is in the grey zone from our income.”

“Lord, please accept my time and talents as part of my tithing. “

I do tithe and we have settled on an amount but I’m not sure it is nitty gritty 10% .

I do remember that we give to God the FIRST of our fruits...  I think of it as, if I put in $10 in the offering plate then I’m really saying that I expect God to provide only $100 dollars this week. What I give expresses what I expect.

9/20/2018  —  Psalms 27:23-24

“Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.”
Proverbs 27:23-24  —  New International Version

These Bible passages seem like a good reason to keep account records up to date and housekeeping budgets organized. God gives to us but we are required to “have dominion” over the blessings and not let it dribble away.

I’ve tried to keep track of our finances by a phone app and I’m glad to see that my concern doesn’t have to mean I’m “controlling” but rather that I’m being a good steward.

9/19/2018  —  Colossians 3:23

“In all the work you are doing, work the best you can. Work as if you were doing it for the Lord, not for people.”
Colossians 3:23  —  New Century Version

What is my job?  Teaching.  Keeping house. Crosswalk duty.

What do I do?  Sew. Blog. Swim. Walk.

Do I do and work with my whole heart?  God says that is what I am supposed to do and I’ve always kept in my mind though Tetsu would probably say my “do what makes me happy” attitude is a luxury. Work is not always fun...

Work and duty is not always fun, but it is always given by God and therefore I have a responsibility to give it my all and all.  And make the best of my attitude while I do it!

Romans 12:1 — Message Bible translation has always shifted my mind to doing things for God in all I do.

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.”
Romans 12:1 - MSG

9/18/2018  —  Deuteronomy 8:18

“Instead, remember that the Lord your God gives you the strength to make a living. That's how he keeps the promise he made to your ancestors.”
Deuteronomy 8:18

I thank God that He has provided us with a way to make a living and to useful to the world. He is my source of material goods and He has and will sustain us. Even though the income of our past 40 years is changing, the SOURCE of our lives doesn’t change. God still provide, He has just changed His means.

9/16/2018  —  Philemon 1:6

“As you share your faith with others, I pray they may come to know all the blessings Christ has given us.”
Philemon 1:6  — Contemporary English Version

God promises to use our meager efforts at sharing our faith and bring others to belief. Maybe more often than not we never see the final results.

I have been discouraged and disappointed by friends who have rejected God’s invitation. How can they be so blind?  Don’t they realize what they are turning away?

The “failure” of evangelism is heart wrenching and I really think I’ll throw in the towel and not try again. It is so much easier to enjoy my faith by myself. But I suppose God is saying that sharing my faith isn’t a one time deal.

God does the changing of people’s hearts. Not me.

9/15/2018  —  Psalm 41:1

“Blessed [by God’s grace and compassion] is he who considers the helpless; The LORD will save him in the day of trouble.”
PSALM 41:1  —  Amplified Bible

NOT considering the helpless is not a problem with me. I consider too much (if such a thing is possible) and get wired down in whose responsibility, long term involvement problems, financing.

It is fear of all the what if’s...  but that is what God is talking about. There are a lot of
people who would probably be willing to help out if it didn’t mean opening up to a major commitment.

God says that He will help and save. In the future.  In the problem itself.

Lord, give me the certainty that I am to step out. Provide the means and the desire and blessings that go with following Your leadings. Help me to KNOW Your will.

9/14/2018  —  Psalm 1:1-3

“God blesses those people who refuse evil advice and won't follow sinners or join in sneering at God. Instead, they find happiness in the Teaching of the Lord, and they think about it day and night. They are like trees growing beside a stream, trees that produce fruit in season and always have leaves. Those people succeed in everything they do.”
Psalms 1:1-3  —  Contemporary English Version

I try to read the Bible daily. For those few minutes I nod my head and underline yet am I thinking about these jewels of guidance day and night?  How do I even do that?

Reading the Bible and studying the Bible are probably different. In the past, I have gotten out notebooks and paper and summarized and made application suggestions. Those were important times for me too but I’m not sure that I remembered God’s lessons longer or learned them better.

I wonder how other Christians meditate on God’s Word...

9/13/2018  —  James 1:25

“But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice—you will be blessed by God in what you do.”
James 1:25  —  Good News Translation

God blesses the people who listen to Him and talk with Him.

I try to come to Him daily, I read His Word, I pray for direction, for protection, for wisdom.  The time I spend with God is for receiving my instructions and to lay open my petitions.  My CHALLENGE is to not forget or ignore but to chose to obey.

9/12/2018  —  Psalm 91:1

“Those who go to God Most High for safety will be protected by the Almighty.”
Psalms 91:1

Blessings...  we ask for blessings. We thank God for His blessings. We even say “God bless you.”

The definition of ‘blessing’ is ‘God’s favor and protection.’

God blesses me by giving me all that I need and by protecting me from harm. I am drowning is blessings that I hardly recognize. Protected with no effort or deserving of my own, my needs, even my wants given to me freely.  What right do I have to EVER feel discontent?  How can I even THINK of complaining?

And God tells me to ASK, to SEEK and to EXPECT!

God bless you too.

9/11/2018  —  Ephesians 4:24

“And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.”
Ephesians 4:24

God has another goal that we are to reach for, to be more and more like Him... to have godly characteristics. Actually He made us in His own image and we threw away those characteristics with sin...

How am I to act godly?  Definitely pray about it as it sure doesn’t come naturally.  I want to make my choices in life considering what pleases God.   I want to consider each person’s situation and emotion without judgement.

But I don’t want to be snobbishly pious and self righteous...  it is a difficult balance.

9/9/2018  —   Matthew 9:29

“He touched their eyes and said, “Become what you believe.” It happened.
Matthew 9:29

Jesus said to have faith. If I have a goal then to make it more than a dream I need faith to say “God bless this endeavor. Give me wisdom and courage. Stay beside me.”

If I sit around thinking I can’t and I won’t the that’s what I’ll be.

“Whether you can or you can’t, you’re right!”

9/7/2018  —  Esther 4:4

“When Esther's servant women and eunuchs told her what Mordecai was doing, she was deeply disturbed...”
Esther 4:4  —  Good News Translation

One of the reasons that Esther acted for her people was because she heard about their conditions and it upset her to the point that she felt she had to act.

What deeply disturbs me?

Without a doubt the way animals are treated deeply disturbs me.  But I fear that my own hysteria gets in the way of ANY good I might want to do. I can’t BEAR to be around pitiful animals and I flee. I’m pretty sure this is an undiagnosed phobia but at any rate I am paralyzed by any emotion connected to animals.

So I’m trying to convince God that this is one area that I CANNOT act.

“Leave me in peace, Lord!”

I know...  I sound like a loony.

Let’s see if I can find any other “disturbances” that I could work on...

God, I’m praying to You for clarity... and help.

9/6/2018  —  Esther 2:7

“Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, who had no father or mother, so Mordecai took care of her. Hadassah was also called Esther, and she had a very pretty figure and face. Mordecai had adopted her as his own daughter when her father and mother died.”
Esther 2:7  —  New Century Version

Esther had gifts from God, mainly beauty and courage, but she had also been “blessed” by unfortunate circumstances, orphaned, a minority  in a culture not her own. Yet God used Esther’s gifts as well as her disadvantages.

We often make excuses for not acting on God’s will. “I’m old.  I live out in the boonies.  I have to budget my finances.”  I could probably go on and on about why I CAN’T be an effective ambassador for Christ.

I need to see that the very things that limit me are the things God will use to work His goodness on this earth.

9/5/2018  —  1Peter 4:10

“Each of you has been blessed with one of God's many wonderful gifts to be used in the service of others. So use your gift well.”
1 Peter 4:10  —  Contemporary English Version

One of my goals (one of God’s goals for me) is to love other people.  Loving, I suppose, could be sitting here loving others from afar.  But God also gives me assignments... stewardship...  to love others through actions and that means I’m supposed to use the talents God gives me for others’ good.

Use my sewing talents?  My language talents?  What other talents do I have?

I can’t really figure out how to use my sewing talents for the greater good. There are only so many quilts my friends and family needs...

Language talents?  Teaching (I guess...)  Translating and correcting... (only occasional...)  and does being paid for using talents even count?  Hmmm...

9/4/2018  —  Genesis 24:53

“Then the servant brought out jewelry of silver, jewelry of gold, and articles of clothing, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and her mother.”
GENESIS 24:53  —  Amplified Bible

I guess the lesson here is that if there is a goal then there is going to be price to pay (in the good sense).  If I want to do something, have something, BE something, then it requires the investment of time AND probably money.

For overly thrift-minded me, that is a concept that often freezes me. I may want to take more beautiful photos but I’m not willing to pay out the money for expensive lenses. I may want to learn how to do long-arm quilting but just the cost of a machine makes me close the door on THAT dream.

It makes sense to invest in a college education for a bright future but I hesitate to spend on ANY non-necessity especially as we are heading into pension-living.

I need to see that the Bible encourages wise spending.

9/3/2018  —  Ecclesiastes 4:12

“By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12  —  Message Bible

Let’s see.  Let’s say my goal is to live healthier. (Which in some ways seems like a selfish goal...)  even though it looks like I can do this with will power and all by myself, actually I have a team helping me.

The dietary books I read are written by people who have researched and experimented. The pool was built and maintained by a facility. My husband at least is understanding of the pressures I put on myself not to eat certain things and to get in steps and laps every day. He joins me and even foregoes his own beloved snacks in support.

God says alone I am weak. With a friend I am encouraged. With more friends we are all empowered!

One more thing...  God’s purpose for having us on earth is to learn to love, and love’s best training ground is in the company of others. Maybe even more so in the company of the irritating, unlovable people!

9/2/2018  —  Genesis 24:21

“Meanwhile, the man stood gazing at Rebekah in [reverent] silence, [waiting] to know if the LORD had made his trip successful or not.”
GENESIS 24:21  —  Amplified Bible

God’s servant had a desire to help his master and a goal. He asked and trusted God to lead him. He made a plan for recognizing God’s will and now he waits patiently for God to act.

The waiting can be hard for all of us, and there are more often than not hardships. But if the conviction that the goal is God’s will, and the promise of God’s presence is there then the waiting and the challenges can be met.

It seems to me that so many people live for the now and don’t put in the effort for the future. Could the reason be that there is no goal?  Or is the reason more complicated and there is no hope?

For myself, I have the hope but see that my own goals are vague...  how can I wait patiently for God to manage my life when I don’t even know what the goal I have been given is?

Just because I’m over 60 and not thinking about college doesn’t mean I can be without a goal.

9/1/2018  —  Genesis 24:42-44

““When I came to the well today, I prayed, ‘ LORD, God of my master Abraham, please give me success in what I am doing.  Here I am at the well. When a young woman comes out to get water, I will ask her to give me a drink of water from her jar.  "If she agrees and also offers to bring water for my camels, may she be the one that you have chosen as the wife for my master's son.’"
Genesis 24:42-44—  Good News Bible

Here again, God’s servant is praying for success in his task.  And the chapter goes onto list how this servant was planning to go about the task.  “I will...” do such and such.
“If I do...” such and such.  “I will know God’s will if...” such and such happens.  The man’s plan was clearly thought out about needed to be done, how he was going to do it, what he expected as a result and how he would recognize God’s will.

So much of my life just drifts along. I vaguely expect to be guided by God but I don’t have a certain point when I recognize God’s will or His working in my life.

“Well, that turned out well!  Thank you Lord for this blessing!”

While this awareness of God’s guidance is good, I wonder if I’m not missing the assurance, the deliberateness, the boldness of being a God directed believer.

A prayer journal?  A to-do list? (ANOTHER one!)

8/30/2018  —  Genesis 24:12

“He prayed, “ LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today and keep your promise to my master.”
Genesis 24:12  —  Good News Bible

Praying to God means the I am depending on God.

Wow!  I guess that shows how independent I’m trying to be!  If my prayer life reflects my relationship with God then I’d better get praying!

When I pray I thank God. My prayers are requests for help for my friends or my own problems. But do I pray for success?

If I have a goal for the day whether it be a start to a new quilt or the making of a healthy dinner, shouldn’t that be the focus of my prayer?  God desires that I bathe a project in prayer for success.  It expresses faith in the promises He has made. Praying for success isn’t a selfish request, it is another expression of depending on God.

8/29/2018  —  Genesis 24:7

“The LORD, the God of heaven, brought me from the home of my father and the land of my relatives. And he promised me...”
Genesis 24:7  —  New Century Version

I once started making a list of the Bible’s promises. Well, THAT got to be an endless job!  In fact, I read somewhere that there are over 7000 promises in the Bible!

Remembering and CLAIMING God’s promises is the basis of faith. Just as Abraham tells his servant, “God...  promised me...”  when a difficulty arises we need to find that promise from God and hang on to it.

God loves me.

God has a plan for me.

All things work for good to those who love Him.

Living on God’s promises is my definition of living by faith.

8/28/2018  —  Genesis 24:3

“I want you to make a vow in the name of the LORD, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not choose a wife for my son from the people here in Canaan.”
Genesis 24:3  —  Good News Bible

It seems to me that my own goals in life are vague and not very passionate. I want to be healthy. I want to be godly. I want to be a good wife and mother and friend. I want to do more patchwork.

Do I make a vow before God to stick to a diet?  Do I promise God that I will act out what I read in the Bible?  Do I pledge to daily tell my husband and kids and friends that I love them?  Do I swear that I will improve my quilting with practice, practice, practice?

It is true I have most of these categories on my to do list. Exercise more. Read the Bible. Plan meals. Blog. Sew.   But vague targets don’t get hit...

How do I get keep God at the head of my priority list?

8/27/2018  —  Genesis 24:1

“Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way.”
Genesis 24:1 —  New International Version

I’m not sure I consider myself “very old” but I have to admit that I am ‘old’... retirement age old.

Abraham was old but God continued to bless him and Abraham continued to seek out God’s purpose in his life. He stayed focused on God’s promises to him and never wavered from the course of doing God’s will.

God has brought me this far...  I plan to walk with Him and although my pace is slow I’d rather not get sidetracked. My time remaining on this earth may not be enough to get back on track if I get lost!

God help me to stay true to You and Your plans in my life. Keep me from getting ahead of myself and from falling behind Your expectations. Help me to readjust my compass daily so that it always points at You. In Jesus’ name. Amen

8/26/2018  —  Matthew 6:33

“Instead, be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God and with what he requires of you, and he will provide you with all these other things.”
Matthew 6:33 —  Good News Testament

Being concerned with God’s Kingdom isn’t just being concerned with the church. It could be being concerned about the environment...  God’s kingdom come on earth...  it could be being concerned with my health and the health of loved ones...  God’s earthly temples. The time I’ve been given?  That is Part of God’s eternity...

God requires me to tithe, to take care of my body, to be environmentally conscientious, to not waste my time. How else can I be an asset to God’s kingdom?

8/25/2018  —  1 Corinthians 10:13

“The only temptation that has come to you is that which everyone has. But you can trust God, who will not permit you to be tempted more than you can stand. But when you are tempted, he will also give you a way to escape so that you will be able to stand it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13

This is a verse that has often had me scratching my head. I believe that God will not give me more than I can bear. I believe that there is a way to escape.  I believe that I can trust God.

But there are also the ...  “but”. I know people who were not able to stand, who finally fell to the temptation to commit suicide. Where was the escape route?  Why didn’t God’s faithfulness lift them from the pits in the end?

And then I remind myself that I am taking my eyes from what God does in my life. When I say like Peter, “What of that man Lord?”  Jesus says “I am asking who YOU say I am.”

God doesn’t want me to sidetracked by seeing anything but God in MY life.

8/24/2018  —  Psalms 37:34

“Put your hope in the LORD and obey his commands; he will honour you by giving you the land, and you will see the wicked driven out.”
Psalms 37:34

Is knowledge and intelligence the opposite of faith and obeying?  The more I try to think logically the more I fear doing something knowing my own limitations and the limitations around me.  But if I focus of what God has said and how He can and might use me, if I commit to doing something (obeying) without knowing, then I step forth in faith and by God’s grace may do great things.

It makes me look at logic and intelligence in a whole new light... those people with the least knowledge may be the most courageous!

8/23/2018  —  Ephesians 2:10

“For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above--spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].”
EPHESIANS 2:10  —  Amplified Bible

Someone once bought one of Leiya’s paintings...  a copy she’d been asked to paint of some famous painting. Of course the price she got for her painting was a piddling compared to the famous artist...  and that is how it should be!  The greater the artist, the more value a painting has!

God; the Master Artist, the King of Kings, the Prince of Peace...  He MADE us! There can be no greater maker and thus there can be no greater value for each of us!  It does not matter what we look like nor what we accomplish, our value is evident because of our Maker!

8/22/2018  —  Jeremiah 33:3

““Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you wonderful and marvelous things that you know nothing about.”
Jeremiah 33:3

I’ve heard that Jeremiah 33:3 is God’s telephone number. This is where we go when we need reminding that God will always answer when we call!

God speaks to me in so many ways.  In nature, in people, in sermons, in the Bible, in my heart. How can I feel alone or that God is silent when I seek Him?  But I still sometimes do. I want to look for God and hear God in every detail of my life.

Help me Lord to hear Your voice, to see Your presence. In Jesus name, amen.

8/18/2018  --  Matthew 28:20

"...and lo, I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually--regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age.””
MATTHEW 28:20 --  Amplified Bible

When is the end of the age?  Does it matter really if I know when the end of the world comes?  I read this and think, maybe the words 'end of the age' are speaking of each of our lives.

The span of my mother's life... 96 years.  The span of my own... 63 and counting.  God promises to be with us throughout the good life, throughout the hard end...  and then we are with Him throughout eternity.

8/17/2018  —  Revelations 1:10

“I was in the Spirit [in special communication with the Holy Spirit and empowered to receive and record the revelation from Jesus Christ] on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet,”
REVELATION 1:10  —  Amplified Bible

I have never heard God’s voice like the sound of a trumpet.

However, on the Lord’s Day, last Sunday, I was at church, mourning my mother, seeking God’s peace, when the praise band began to sing Matt Redman’s “10000 Reasons”.

This was the song I came back to over and over in my mother’s final days, playing it to myself when I took a break under the stars, playing it by my mother’s pillow so that she could hear it also.

“And on that day when my strength is failing,
The end draws near and my time has come.
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending.
Ten thousand years and forever more!”

I truly felt God was speaking to me with His miracle of coincidence.

8/16/2018  —  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18  — Message Bible

This translation of this verse actually causes me a setback. How can I be cheerful no matter what?

I found it difficult to be cheerful last week. I felt as if I’d let God down and everyone else who expected my faith to keep me buoyant.  Cheerful was the last emotion when taking care of my mother those last days though I could still find many things about which to be thankful.

Prayer was also hard coming though there was a constant prayer of ‘help me’ and ‘end all this’.

When life got hard, did I measure up?

I still turn to God now though.  I still feel the desire to praise and worship Him. I still want to grow closer and be guided.

Not all happens as I expect nor wish.   But the God of my life still loves me and I Him.

8/9/2018  —  2 Corinthians 4:16-18

“We never give up. Our bodies are gradually dying, but we ourselves are being made stronger each day. These little troubles are getting us ready for an eternal glory that will make all our troubles seem like nothing. Things that are seen don't last forever, but things that are not seen are eternal. This is why we keep our minds on the things that cannot be seen.”
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

The promise I hold for myself and especially for my mother as she suffers through this time.

8/6/2018  —  1 Corinthians 15:20-22

“But Christ has truly been raised from the dead—the first one and proof that those who sleep in death will also be raised. Death has come because of what one man did, but the rising from death also comes because of one man. In Adam all of us die. In the same way, in Christ all of us will be made alive again.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:20-22

I sit watching my mother die. I know her as a woman of God, not vocal in her faith but living that faith throughout her life.

As she lived with Christ she will be raised to heaven in Christ. The knowledge that in a matter of days she will be welcomed by her family and friends who are in heaven fills me with wonder. My hope is that she enters into that place of glory today. I will see her whole again someday when I join her.

8/1/2018  —  Luke 18:1

“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to teach them that they should always pray and never become discouraged.”
Luke 18:1  —  Today’s English Version

The Bible says to never become discouraged. Another version says to not give up hope. I think I am hopeful...  I HOPE grandma with stay comfortable and have a quiet passing.  But I AM discouraged about the slipping changes in her condition and in my own “bolt and run” mentality. I need to be encouraged that God is with us both and that this time is necessary.

So I’m praying.

God I need more courage, the ability to stay cool and not want Marcy to handle everything. God I ask that You settle my mother into a calm period and that she peacefully meets her loved ones and You in heaven. I’m not even sure if I want this end soon or delayed. According to Your will... but please make it easy on ALL of us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen

7/28/2018  Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or dismayed (intimidated), for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.””
JOSHUA 1:9  —  Amplified Bible

I have learned fro reading the Bible, that God works His miracles through His people. He said “Build!”  And Noah saved the world. He said “Go!” And Abraham’s descendents inherited a future. Jesus said “Walk!”  And the sick were healed. He said “Come!”  And burdens were removed, salvation was given, people were changed.

What is God telling me to do?  And to do boldly?  What is my miracle?

7/26/2018  —  Psalms 56:3

“When I am afraid, O Lord Almighty, I put my trust in you.”
Psalm 56:3 —  Good News Translation

I would like to be an unafraid Christian ready to boldly step forward following God’s laid out path.  More often I am a cautious Christian, realistically measuring possible pitfalls and challenges, holding back ideas, resources and energy.

I don’t think God expects me to be fearless.  “When” I am afraid meaning that He knows I’ll be afraid.  I need a mantra.  I put my trust in You.”  I actually HAVE a mantra “God is in control.”  I must automatically go to God when’re things begin to worry me.

7/25/2018  —  2 Peter 1:3

“We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God's own power, when we learned he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness.”
2 Peter 1:3 —  Contemporary English Version

The Bible tells me that I have EVERYTHING I need to please God.  Pleasing God also translates as “leading a godly life”, and “following a religious life”.  Those words seem so staid.   My goal is to please God and I have already done that by accepting Jesus!  This is not a promise, it is an already completed passage!

I PLEASE GOD!  Just by having accepted Jesus’ gift.

7/24/2018  —  Psalms 139:7

“Where could I go to escape from you? Where could I get away from your presence?”
Psalm 139:7  —  Good News Translation

I never want to escape from or be out of the presence of God, and I never will be.  He is with me always though I don’t feel Him.

Well, feelings are unreliable. Feelings change with situations, with words.  God being omnipresent cannot change.

I do want to “feel” God’s presence but that is determined by ME, not God.  How much time I use to seek Him out, my sense of gratitude, my CHOICES in life.

7/23/2018  —  Exodus 3:11-12

“But Moses said, “Who am I to go to the king and lead your people out of Egypt?” God replied, “I will be with you. And you will know that I am the one who sent you, when you worship me on this mountain after you have led my people out of Egypt.””
Exodus 3:11-12 —  Contemporary English Version

Who am I?

I am a child of God. I am a believer in Jesus Christ. I am an ambassador of God’s kingdom and a servant of His will.

I am a student of God’s Word.  A teacher of His precepts learning to teach. A stranger under His protection, in a strange land.

And how do I know that God is the God He says He is?

I will recognize the successes and the accomplishments of my life as evidence of God’s power and faithfulness and love.

The proof lies before me, only pride obstructs my vision.

7/22/2018  —  John 10/10

“The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].”
JOHN 10:10 —  Amplified Bible

Satan is trying to steal and kill and destroy our faith.  And he does a good job of it using this world’s advances, the mediocrity of life, the satiety of things and “deserving” and selfishness.

My faith which was once a wonder of new verses of the Bible, the awesomeness of knowing I was destined for heaven is hidden behind being a proper Christian unmoved by materialism and waste, in fact, boring!

So where is the abundance of joy and enjoyment and why do I feel righteous when I deny myself or spurn “extras”.  Is this enjoying God’s blessings, or is it doing without so others can have more, or is it being prideful of martyrdom?

There must be a balance between enough and enjoyment.

7/21/2018  —  Ecclesiastes 5:10

“Whoever loves money will never have enough money; Whoever loves wealth will not be satisfied with it. This is also useless.”
Ecclesiastes 5:10  —New Century Version

I feel this in myself all the time. I see something I want, I save for it, I research the best price, I LUST for I looking at it online, going over and over to the same shop to touch it, heft its weight, rationalizing about buying it. I finally buy the dang thing and then the process starts again with something else.   Nothing is ever enough.  Materialism grips me with never being satisfied.

I comfort myself with thinking that I at least recognize this but I feel as if I am squandering God’s blessings and not being grateful enough.

Lord, keep me satisfied and enjoying Your blessings.  Help me know what is enough.

7/20/2018  —  James 1:9-10

“Let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position [as a born-again believer, called to the true riches and to be an heir of God]; and the rich man is to glory in being humbled [by trials revealing human frailty, knowing true riches are found in the grace of God], for like the flower of the grass he will pass away.”
JAMES 1:9-10 —  Amplified Bible

In my own self-centered view of things, I live economically, simply, wondering about finances in the future.

In the global view of things, I fall definitely in the rich man’s category, whether I think so or not.

In the eternal picture I am part of royalty, promised God’s kingdom and secure in my physical life on earth... neither measured rich nor poor.

At any rate the Bible urges me to be thankful; for what God has given me now, for what awaits me in heaven.

7/19/2018  —  James 1:5-8

“If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.”
James 1:5-8 MSG

“Worry my prayers”.  That is an interesting term. God says to pray constantly.  Jesus relates the story of the man who kept banging on his neighbor’s door asking for bread. Obviously we are supposed to keep in contact with God through ongoing prayer.

I understand though about the warning of keeping options open. This is so often seen in Japan.  Christians buying good luck trinkets at a temple or shrine.  “Might as well pray to many gods as pray to one”.  Grrr...  it angers me!  How much more does it anger God!

I seek out my only Savior. I flee to THE only God. I stand my chosen faith.

7/18/2018  —  Matthew 21:21

“But Jesus was matter-of-fact: “Yes—and if you embrace this kingdom life and don’t doubt God, you’ll not only do minor feats like I did to the fig tree, but also triumph over huge obstacles.”
Matthew 21:21-22 —  Message Bible

Doubting.  I doubt God’s power, I doubt God’s love, I’m ashamed to say even doubt God’s existence sometimes. “What is going on in this world?!”

Yet still I pray.  I feel ashamed about being so two-faced yet I believe that God is the only way, that He will do what He says.

If one retains the right to choose his own way and only goes to God for advice, then what is the purpose of going to Him?  On the flip side, if I am going to God for guidance then my heart is WANTING to do what He tells me.  I am choosing not to doubt His direction.

7/17/2018  —  James 1:5

“But if any of you lack wisdom, you should pray to God, who will give it to you; because God gives generously and graciously to all.”
James 1:5  —  Good News Translation

I don’t know why I go through life thinking that figuring out God’s way is so secretive. The Bible is right here in front of me.  God Himself says that all I have to do is ask. And the Holy Spirit has been placed inside me to direct and guide and teach me from within.

Go in prayer.  Ask!  Wait with expectation.

7/16/2018  James 1:2-4

“Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.”
James 1:2-4 — Message Bible

In the back of my mind, learning to be patient, convincing myself that problems are good for me, training myself to choose a positive attitude, all these things, I know, are taking me closer to what God wishes me to be.  But from my everyday self this seems like nonsense. “Get me out of here!  I’m not going to handle this!”

God uses pressures to mold people and ready them for His kingdom.  Even weight trainers train by adding ever increasing weights to their routine. Even I will add more laps to pool swimming if I want to reach a future distance goal. It is not always pleasant but attempting, enduring, doing the bit extra brings the rewards.

7/14/2018  — Deuteronomy 6:7

“Teach them to your children, and talk about them when you sit at home and walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
Deuteronomy 6:7

I want to leave a legacy of faith for my family and my friends. Telling them of God’s goodness may let them know how I’ve been blessed but seeing how I live through hardships, through miracles, through, challenges shows faith.

Doing the everyday things with God is the greatest testimony.

“What we practice, not (save at rare intervals) what we preach, is usually our great contribution to the conversion of others.” —C. S. LEWIS

7/11/2018  --  Jeremiah 29:7

“Also do good things for the city where I sent you as captives. Pray to the LORD for the city where you are living, because if good things happen in the city, good things will happen to you also.””
Jeremiah 29:7  --  New Century Version

God put me where I am to do something for Him...  To pray for people I come into contact with...  to make a place better because I was there.

This is my world, my country, my town, my neighborhood.  I may be at odds occasionally or not agree with policies, but I must choose to see good, to pray for good, to be thankful for things that are not always visible.

I have been annoyed with the noisy lumber yard across the street.  It keeps us awake at night and I've wished it wasn't doing such a booming business and not operating 24 hours.

WRONG!  I thank God that the economy is on a high.  I thank God that many people and their families are being supplied by the booming construction, not to mention many families being upheld by workers' salaries.  The noise is a reminded of how God holds all of us in His hands and that we are one community.

7/9/2018  --  Hebrews 3:1

“And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest.”
Hebrews 3:1  --  New Living Translation

Thinking about Jesus.  Again, the images of movies and art invade my thoughts and I wonder if those are limiting or are helpful.  Jesus seems too human in those...  where is the aura of glory?  Where is He sitting to the right of God?  (Whom of course can't be depicted at all!)

The Bible says for the very reason that Jesus sits in glory that I can come to God in eternity and also daily in prayer.  Jesus shows me how to love and how to live while welcoming me into fellowship with the Trinity.

7/7/2018  --  John 17:21

“I want all of them to be one with each other, just as I am one with you and you are one with me. I also want them to be one with us. Then the people of this world will believe that you sent me.”
John 17:21  --  Contemporary English Version

Which is more difficult?  Imagining myself talking with Jesus or imagining myself talking with God?

Jesus came into this world as a physical being with human attributes while God reigns in heavenly glory.  Somehow though I can imagine God  listening to me whereas I get flickering images of old movies and paintings of Jesus and He seems too 'made up'.

Yet God and Jesus are one... (along with the Holy Spirit) and they desire that I be one with them.  Praying together, talking together being at peace together.

Jesus, thank you for sitting here beside me, knowing me, waiting for me to speak out my heart.  And thank You for kneeling with me before Holy God, interceding for me, claiming me as Your own.

7/6/2018  --  Romans 8:26-27

“Also, the Spirit helps us with our weakness. We do not know how to pray as we should. But the Spirit himself speaks to God for us, even begs God for us with deep feelings that words cannot explain. God can see what is in people’s hearts. And he knows what is in the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit speaks to God for his people in the way God wants.”
Romans 8:26-27  --  New Century Version

How often have I prayed and known that I have no idea how deep the problem is, how much the person I'm praying for is hurting.  I can only imagine and then reaffirm my conviction that God knows all and the Holy Spirit is the only One who can make sense of my despair, foreboding, concern, desperation...

How grateful I am that I don't need to be an eloquent pray-re.  That God's ears are not moved by me but by the Holy Spirit who knows all and speaks all.  And the Holy Spirit will ALWAYS pray according to God's will!

7/5/2018  --  1 John 5:14-15

"...And how bold and free we then become in his presence, freely asking according to his will, sure that he’s listening. And if we’re confident that he’s listening, we know that what we’ve asked for is as good as ours.”
1 John 5:13-15  --  Message Bible

Instead of becoming a prayer warrior I AM a prayer warrior.  Instead of becoming, I already am...  I am everything God wants me to be, no matter my discouragement over my progress, no matter what I think a 'perfect' person of God might be.  So though I may feel my prayer life is not all it should be, God considers my prayers enough.  Thank You, Lord!  He will grow me up in His time and purpose.

Continue to pray, Tanya.  Know that God listens.  Rejoice in the fact that you go to Him.  Hold to the promise that He is here beside you.  Be bold.

7/4/2018  --  Psalm 100:4

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name.”
Psalms 100:4  --  New Living Translation

I've been thinking, how do we show God our love?  By obeying, by doing acts in His name.  But actually God could do all with one word...  He doesn't really NEED our sacrifices and work.

I can love God by worshipping Him and by drawing closer to Him but the Bible says start by giving God thanks.  Before anything else, I need to say thank you for all the blessings I've been given.

I remember telling my son once when he was in jr. High school, that I no longer expected the "Mommy, I love you." any more.  Those would be hard words for a teenaged to say to his parents.

"Whenever you say 'thank you', for dinner, for a lift to a friend's house, for a requested purchase, I hear the words 'I love you' and that is enough."

We are saying 'I love You' to God whenever we thank Him.

7/3/2018  --  Jeremiah 3:33

“‘Call on me in prayer and I will answer you. I will show you great and mysterious things which you still do not know about.’”
Jeremiah 3:33  --  New English Translation

I have an honest desire to pray to God, to see His workings, to see results to prayer, to talk freely with God and feel His presence.  To know His POWER.

But truthfully, I wonder if God hears me or cares.  My prayers are random and faded, more like trying to tame my mind to stay focus.  I sometimes think if I just prayed and God spoke to me audibly, if an obvious miracle just happened immediately, then I'd be a believer in prayer...  So, I am much like the unbelievers who demand a miracle...  I relate to the Bible verse, "I believe...  help me in my unbelief."  (Mark 9:24)

There is this PROMISE from God!  CALL on Him.  He says He will show me.  I understand the importance of prayer.  "Pray without ceasing."  I want to take up the challenge to be a prayer warrior...  I'm asking God to fulfill His promise.  SHOW me that my prayer matters.

6/30/2018  --  John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; My [perfect] peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. [Let My perfect peace calm you in every circumstance and give you courage and strength for every challenge.]”
JOHN 14:27  --  Amplified Bible

God talks to me when I sit down with my Bible.  He lets me talk to Him in prayer.

God also talks though nature, through friends, in a billion other ways I don't even notice.  Through things that make me angry, though fiction and incomprehensible pain.  Through memories!

God seeks me out and draws me in.  He recognizes my desire to know Him better and to follow His leadings.  He gives me hope and assurance each time I call out to Him.

6/28/2018  --  Psalm 37:23

“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.”
Psalms 37:23  --  New Living Translation

Not only 'should' my steps follow God, nor 'when' my steps follow God, but those very steps are being directed by God!  How can I go wrong?!

Like the small successes and tumblings bring smiles to a child's parents, God delights in my efforts.  He BEAMS with joy at my attempts.

God doesn't expect me to do His work perfectly or to know as much as He does.  Jesus is the example He's given me and all I need to do is follow.

6/27/2018  --  1 Corinthians 2:4-5

“My teaching and preaching were not with words of human wisdom that persuade people but with proof of the power that the Spirit gives. This was so that your faith would be in God’s power and not in human wisdom.”
1 Corinthians 2:4-5  --  New Century Version

Before teaching and preaching a believer has to absorb the love, the hope, the forgiveness of God.  And God speaks to us through the Bible.  He is not only SPEAKING but EMPOWERING us through the Bible because the Bible is the LIVING Word of God.

I am not reading the Bible or quoting the Bible or spreading the Good News because I think the Bible is convincing...  I must be convicted that God works through the Bible changing me and anyone who comes into contact.  It is the fragrance of the Holy Spirit that draws God's intended towards Him.

6/26/2018  --  Habakkuk 2:2-3

“The LORD answered me: “Write down the vision; write it clearly on clay tablets so whoever reads it can run to tell others. It is not yet time for the message to come true, but that time is coming soon; the message will come true. It may seem like a long time, but be patient and wait for it, because it will surely come; it will not be delayed.”
Habakkuk 2:2-3  --  New Century Version

I love when a verse jumps out at me as if something newly written.  I love seeing the differences in Bible translations!

It is easy to wonder if I am fooling myself believing in God's promises.  (O ye of little faith!)
My children HAVE been saved... God will not let them go.  God has the best planned for us... it doesn't matter that logically we grow weak and frail.  The whole earth will someday bow down to Jesus... this time of rejection is only a stopping place.

What I pray for, what God tells me, what I do for Him, doesn't always have immediate results.  He says write it down (the revelations of my heart) and wait expectantly and patiently.  In God's timing nothing is delayed... all is on schedule.

6/25/2018  --  Psalm 109:27

“Then they will realize this is your work, and that you, LORD, have accomplished it.”
Psalms 109:27  --  New English Translation

What does it mean to go about God's work?  It is all of my life, all of my time on this planet.  It molds me with my thoughts and emotions and shows itself in my relationships with others.

No matter what I do, in the "everyday, ordinary life --  my sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life...", (Romans 12:1 MSG) it is God's business.  May the people whom I meet in this life, meet God in my actions.

6/22/2018  --  Colossians 2:6-7

“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in [union with] Him [reflecting His character in the things you do and say--living lives that lead others away from sin], having been deeply rooted [in Him] and now being continually built up in Him and [becoming increasingly more] established in your faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing in it with gratitude.”
COLOSSIANS 2:6-7  --  Amplified Bible

I am rooted in Jesus and all I need to do is reflect His character.  I seem to think I need to say the right things, convince people, go out and actively evangelize.   Isn't it enough that I just live in a way that makes God happy and that He does the rest... bringing people to Him. It is not my failure if they don't come, as long as I am reflecting God's love...

Don't make it such a chore, Tanya!

How was I taught?  My mentors of God's love taught me by their examples, maybe explaining but not always.  They are still teaching me (Martha, Ann, Kaoru, Yumiko) by their cheerfulness, by their CHEERFUL sacrifices, by their unwavering faith.  And they all overflow with gratitude!  May I be that way too.

6/21/2018  --  John 15:8

“My Father's glory is shown by your bearing much fruit; and in this way you become my disciples.”
John 15:8 --  Good News Translation

Although I'm sure God rejoiced over the evangelists and pastors in His world, He didn't make us all that way.  He made some people to love nature, some to love noise, some to love research, some to love sports.  If He has made me to love handwork and animals and cooking (whoops, not applicable to me) then God is happy when I've used my passions and talents in that area.

If I forced myself to be a pastor just because it is more "spiritual" I wouldn't be enjoying my life and I wouldn't be using my gifts.  And I'd probably be trying to do work that God hadn't equipped me to do!

Though by my human measurements my fruitfulness doesn't seem like much, it is just as much as God has planned.  He is not judging and He is happy when I am doing the job He gave me to do.

6/20/2018  --  Mark 12:30

“The Lord your God is one; so love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy."
Mark 12:30  --  Message Bible

In other versions this verse is "Love your Lord God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength."

I can love God with my heart... my passion for animals, for handwork.

I can love Him with my soul.... my prayer (that's an interesting translation) my god given personality, my desire for God.

I can love Him with my mind... the intelligence I've been trusted with, the knowledge I've accumulated, the wisdom I've encountered, the experiences that have made me think the way I do.

And I can love Him with my strength...  the energy, health and material resources allotted to me.

Thank you Lord for all Your blessings.

6/19/2018  --  Ephesians 2:10

“God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing.”
Ephesians 2:10  --  New Century Version

Not liking who I am, or not liking the way my body ages or becomes weak is like saying I don't like what God has planned and done.  (Which honestly speaking may be true but I still plan to recognize God's wisdom in making me this way.)

We hear "God loves me" so much that it doesn't even register anymore...  'yeah, yeah, what else is new?'  How about "God NEEDS me"?  God planned work for me to do in my physical body.  Whether it works the way I want it to or not, whether I think I have the abilities and strengths or not, it works the way God wants it to... to do His work.  If He didn't need me to do His work anymore He'd call me to eternity.

I am supposed to use my life to contribute to God's world.  He will take me where He wants and use me in the ways He wishes.

6/18/2018  --  1 Samuel 30:6

“Further, David was greatly distressed... But David felt strengthened and encouraged in the LORD his God.”
1 SAMUEL 30:6  --  Amplified Bible

In some versions of the Bible it says that David drew strength from the Lord.  Is there a difference in being strengthened (passive) and drawing strength (active)?

What must I do to receive God's strength?

Go to God in prayer.

Expect God to respond.

Remember what God has done for me in the past.

Reflect on God's promises (the Bible verses I've hopefully memorized.)

Sing God's praises and be uplifted in songs of worship.

Seek out more messages to me from God through godly people and Bible reading.

6/16/2018  --  Luke 16:9

“And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.”
Luke 16:9 --  New American Standard Bible

What do I do to bring other people to heaven?  To introduce them to Jesus?  Giving them a Bible or a spiritual book might be a way.  (Someone thanked me for giving them the Purpose Driven Life which I don’t remember doing it was so long ago. And they shelved it until just recently!).

Donating to evangelistic programs is another. (The money spent for Yuma-kun to spend three days at youth camp seems like a waste of money right now but it may have everlasting consequences... who knows).

Yes...  who knows what my offerings may mean people will be waiting in heaven for me drawn by a gift of introduction I’ve made.

Keep reaching out. Do not be frustrated by non-results!

6/15/2018  --  Luke 16:9

“And I tell you [learn from this], make friends for yourselves [for eternity] by means of the wealth of unrighteousness [that is, use material resources as a way to further the work of God], so that when it runs out, they will welcome you into the eternal dwellings.”
LUKE 16:9  --  Amplified Bible

God gives us money to be used for others. What I use my money for shows what I value most.

I seem to use a lot of my money on my animals.  They must be pretty high on my priority list.  I use money on food...  what does that say about me?  I use money to make my home and garden pleasant.  That is my peaceful nest on this earth.  As a couple we put much of our finances into insurance, into savings, into tithing.  I can't really see how our lifestyle is for God's work...  is this something we should be reconsidering?

6/14/2018  --  Luke 16:11-12

“Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of earthly wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you? And if you have not been faithful in the use of that [earthly wealth] which belongs to another [whether God or man, and of which you are a trustee], who will give you that which is your own?”
LUKE 16:11-12  --  Amplified Bible

I think I understand these verses.  God asks us to use His riches for His purposes and we are only trustees. I understand that how I use my finances shows what I value in life.  I know that I value living for God but I do not see/understand the connection between using my finances for God's work and being a faithful servant.  I do not see/trust donating to churches/Christian causes as being faithful...  BEYOND WHAT I THINK GOD HAS ASKED ME TO TITHE.  Is this selfishness or making excuses?  But then again, am I to give money to every good cause that comes about?

And then comes the question of security.  Are we selfish to consider ourselves first and be generous from the overflow?  Are we trapped into thinking we MIGHT not have enough in the future and ought to keep extra for the someday?  What is trusting God and what is being sensible?

6/12/2018  --  Genesis 24:7

“The Lord who rules heaven brought me here from the land where I was born and promised..."
Genesis 24:7 --  Contemporary English Version

There so many first steps we have to take not knowing what lies ahead.  Will things work out?  Will the challenges be more than I can deal with or even WANT to deal with?  Is the effort futile?

If I remember that God is with me through everything, it should make my steps bolder, my attitude more confident.  Claiming the promises of the Bible, which are more than I can count, will remind me how much God loves me, how He is always working for my good.

6/11/2018  --  John 13:34

““A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
John 13:34  —  New International Version

The verse is not God’s ‘suggestion’ it is a command!  I can’t choose here which command I’m going to obey...  that would be ... treason?

Okay, so I understand the command and I plan to carry out God’s orders but how?  It is not easy to love everyone and there are people I am wary of, people who are evil, people who don’t particularly like or want anything to do with me!  How is love expressed in cases as this?

Stay open and approachable.  Keep smiling. Reach out in kindness when the opportunity arises.  And pray for the people who come into my life. Especially the difficult ones!

6/9/2018  --  Job 11:13-18

“Surrender your heart to God, turn to him in prayer, and give up your sins— even those you do in secret. Then you won't be ashamed; you will be confident and fearless. Your troubles will go away like water beneath a bridge, and your darkest night will be brighter than noon. You will rest safe and secure, filled with hope and emptied of worry.”
Job 11:13-18  --  Contemporary English Version

With God:
1) I can be without shame
2) I can be confident
3) I can be fearless
4) my troubles will go away
5) my darkness will disappear
6) I will rest sleep well
7) I will be filled with hope
8) my worries will vanish

All those blessings hinge on turning over myself to God daily, praying to Him about my life, and giving up my sins.

6/8/2018  --  Philippians 2:5

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:”
Philippians 2:5  --  New International Version

There was a Christian fad for awhile, WWJD, 'what would Jesus do?' which I didn't really lapse onto but I understand the thinking.  In everything, in every situation ask yourself "What Would Jesus Do?" and then do likewise.

If I am to control my emotions, it might be easiest to stop and take a breath and think, 'is this what Jesus would think, would feel, would do?'

The emotions that spring up, I really can't deny.  They are sometimes reactions that don't give time for thought or even prayer.  But maybe the negative situations, the ones that bring frustration or grief, or even anger, can be channeled into good... that is what Jesus would do, and that is how many philanthropists, many activists, get started.  They put their pain and their sense of right and wrong into something that will HELP.

I don't want to be a wallow-er.  I want to be God's do-er.  My emotions can be used for good.

6/7/2018  --  1 Peter 4:1-2

“Since Jesus went through everything you’re going through and more, learn to think like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way. Then you’ll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want.”
1 Peter 4:1-2  --  Message Bible

I was impressed long ago by the teaching that we should not let our emotions and situations control us and that God's truth never changes.  moods and feelings change so easily yet knowing what God says keeps me from swaying with the times.  When things don't go the way I want and my mood plummets I need to remember that frustrations and disappointments are helping me to think the way God thinks, to change me into the way God wants me to be.

6/6/2018  --  1 Corinthians 12:4-6

"Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits."
1 Corinthians 12:4-6  --  Message Bible

I see that God gives me gifts...  and I even see that it might be important to know what they are.  I remember thinking this through before, trying to determine what my spiritual gifts might be, but I've forgotten them now.

"Each person is given something to do that shows who God is."

If I'm a pastor or an evangelist then it is easy to see the spiritual gift as teaching or leading.  What do I do (can I do) to show others who God is?  Be happy.  Enjoy worshipping.  Keep a peaceful heart.  Be full of gratitude.  Those are attributes but are the gifts of this Spirit?

I need to go read the Purpose Driven Life again...

6/5/2018  --  1 Corinthians 12:4-6

“Now there are [distinctive] varieties of spiritual gifts [special abilities given by the grace and extraordinary power of the Holy Spirit operating in believers], but it is the same Spirit [who grants them and empowers believers]. And there are [distinctive] varieties of ministries and service, but it is the same Lord [who is served]. And there are [distinctive] ways of working [to accomplish things], but it is the same God who produces all things in all believers [inspiring, energizing, and empowering them].”
1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6  --  Amplified Bible

The Bible says that God has given me spiritual gifts to enable me to get the work done that He wants me to do.  I may not know what these gifts are or when I'm going to need to use them but one thing is for sure, the gifts are to be used for others, not for myself.  And others of God's family have gifts that are to be used to help me too.

Is it important to find my spiritual gifts?  I can't really develop them or even choose them.  But it would be nice to know exactly how and when God uses me (them).

6/4/2018  --  Romans 8:6

“To be controlled by human nature results in death; to be controlled by the Spirit results in life and peace.”
Romans 8:6  --  Good News Translation

The human spirit is many things but one of the attributes is emotion.  Emotion is probably what makes us human (do animals have emotions?  Yes...  well, more stuff to think about).  Anyway, god made us with emotions so they must be good but they also need to be controlled.

I don't think I am an emotional person but I do flip out (cry, go into fear mode, worry and become depressed) when animals are involved.  I FLEE when I see a stray cat or dog.  I can't go down a street where I know an animal has been killed.  I cannot bear pet shops and zoos.  There is definitely something out of whack with my emotions!

Letting my emotions control me is putting my feelings as god of my life.  I need to remind myself daily that God is in control of MY life, of the animal world, of all situations.  Worrying and living in fear or what animal is going to cross my path next is NOT trusting God for all our best.

Give it all to God, Tanya.  Take a deep breath and don't try to be lord of your situations.  Trust, pray, fill yourself with God's promises when you can.

6/1/2018  --  2 Corinthians 10:3-5

“We do live in the world, but we do not fight in the same way the world fights. We fight with weapons that are different from those the world uses. Our weapons have power from God that can destroy the enemy’s strong places. We destroy people’s arguments and every proud thing that raises itself against the knowledge of God. We capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:3-5   --  New Century Version

I believe that I live differently than non Christians.  I strive to put aside slander and negative thoughts, materialism, self promotion.  I refuse to degrade others or gossip...  but I also feel uncomfortable preaching and lecturing.  These are all weapons of the world.  So, what are God's weapons?

Prayer for one.  And prayer will lead to Jesus' interceding and God's angels standing guard.  These are things that the world will never understand and will call foolish.

"Every high thing must come down
Every stronghold shall be broken
You wear the Victor's crown
You have overcome!

Jesus, You have overcome the world!"

5/31/2018  --  Matthew 4:4

“Jesus answered, “The Scriptures say: ‘No one can live only on food. People need every word that God has spoken.’ ””
Matthew 4:4  --  Contemporary English Version

We make so much of our diets... trying to stay healthy, trying to look good.  I go for non-carbohydrate.  My husband needs low-sodium.

If I know that food plays a major part of my physical health, how much more aware I should be that my mind needs good food too.  Clogging up my mind with television murder mysteries and mindless game shows is not going to do much for my heart and mind.

This is why Jesus instructs us to feed our minds with the Bible.  God has spoken to us and His Words are at our fingertips in the Written Word.   Even if they are not within my reach, the gospel songs of His truth and power that I have sung at church or listened to as I sew, stay in my mind throughout my day.

5/30/2018  --  Proverbs 4:23

“Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.”
Proverbs 4:23  --  Good News Translation

Though I believe my life is controlled and guided by God, I also know that my decisions lay out the path of my life.  That is why it is so important to keep my thoughts in line with God's will!

This isn't just true for believers.  A negative thought process by anyone will result in unhappiness and discontent.  A cheerful person of any faith may find life exciting and a fun challenge.

Because I have been given this life, I want to keep it peaceful and enjoy my time on earth.  And I've already chosen to only follow Jesus.  My daily choice is to look forward to the blessings and challenges that He brings into my life to train me for His kingdom!

5/29/2018  --  Hebrews 11:6

“It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6  --  Message Bible

Do I believe in God?  Absolutely!  Do I believe that He will respond to me, answer me, give me the best if I ask Him?  Well...  if He feels inclined...  if I get my prayers right... if I have developed enough patience to wait on Him...

I get the feeling that I only ever read the first part of verse 6.  I (and many other people) only believe that God exists... that that is the only proof of faith...  but the second half of the verse clearly says I must have faith to set goals knowing that God will act on my behalf, ask for things expecting a clear answer.  This expectations are acts of faith not only in God's existence but also in His devotion to each and every one of His children.

5/28/2018  --  Psalm 142:3

“When I am ready to give up, he knows what I should do."
Psalm 142:3  --  Good News Translation

I may want to give up when things are hard, when I am in grief or sorrow, when I am frustrated even irritated.  In all these situations God already knows the path I should take and He will guide me if I look to Him.

Turn away from shadows and fears.  Shadows are NOTHING and they are bigger than the actual object.  Turn to the Light.  He is always there and instead of facing the shadow head on, I need to place my back to the problem and look at Jesus.

5/26/2018  --  Matthew 11:28-30

““Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.””
Matthew 11:28-30  --  Message Bible

Practically, what is "resting in Jesus"?  Giving Him my problems, trusting Him sounds great, and of course I want the unforced rhythms of grace... but if I can't force it and I tire myself out trying, what am I supposed to do?

It seems to me that a lot of things that come "naturally" to me are habits that have been formed and they no longer are the struggle for me that others see them to be.  Exercise, food choices, making a huge quilt...  In the same way, rhythms of grace need to evolve over time with thinking of Jesus, reading the Bible, the habit of prayer.

Trusting God depends on daily acknowledging God's power.  Being light and free depends on the attitude of gratitude.  These are the things that can be developed in the days of peace and stillness.  These are the days that will sustain me later.

5/25/2018  --  1 Peter 4:19

“So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.”
1 Peter 4:19  --  New Living Translation

What might be a way that my suffering pleases God?  He doesn't want me hurting...  I know He only has my good in mind.  Maybe the uncomfortable (unbearable ) situation is occurring to teach me, or mold my character.  Maybe the situation is helping someone else, showing them the way to God.  I often think that God does things so that I can be changed, or I can grow... but maybe He is using me as a tool.

So, in my situation I am not to go wildly looking for solutions but to trust... to know what God has said, to be in tune with His righteousness.

5/24/2018  --  Romans 8:32

“Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?”
Romans 8:32  --  New Living Translation

Things that I worry about:

-Being able to live within our needs after retirement

-My children's relationship with Jesus

-Health and being able to stay steady and peaceful in times of despair

-Using my time purposely

There is not need for worry.  God has given all  and will give all.  My material needs will always be supplied.  God is always working in my children's lives in ways I do not see.  My final destination is eternity with God and He promises to be beside me through everything.  Even now, God is guiding me, nudging me daily, directing my days.

God is the One who gives all security.

5/23/2018  --  Matthew 9:29

“Then Jesus touched their eyes and said, “Let it happen, then, just as you believe!”—”
Matthew 9:29  --  Good News Translation

If I don't have a plan in mind, or a goal then I am going to continue to drift along.  If I want to make a quilt and I don't start with a plan or pattern, if I don't put aside the fabric or the money for fabric, if I don't schedule out time...  it is not going to happen.  Saying, "God, I want to make a quilt." And not doing anything means... zilch.

On the other hand, if I set the goal (and pray about it), if I make plans and have the result in my mind...  then I'm more likely to reach the result I was hoping for.

Believing I can do things, or believing that God will do things when I attune myself to His will and ask for His blessing, well, God respects and works in my behalf "just as you believe".

5/22/2018  --  1 Corinthians 9:25-26

“All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing.”
1 Corinthians 9:25-26  --  New Living Translation

Faith requires training... not trying.  No matter how much I think running a marathon is good for me just trying is not going to get me to the goal line.  With training, over months and with perseverance and purpose, that goal is reachable.

I have some wonderful missionary friends who have been very DELIBERATE in their lifestyle.  They know why they do most things.  To help the environment, to help the economy, to show people Jesus' love.

I need to remember that God put me on this earth to accomplish His purposes but also to make me into an eternal being with His character.  My lifetime is my training ground.  Live purposely!

5/21/2018  --  Psalms 68:4

“Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Lift up a song for Him who rides through the desert-- His name is the LORD --be in good spirits before Him.”
PSALM 68:4 --  Amplified Bible

We are going to be celebrating this week.  We will celebrate Tetsu's retirement, his step from a fast paced life of schedules and responsibilities to a time of freedom and relaxation.

It is also a time to celebrate nearly 40 years of being able to support our family, giving our children the tools and paths to choose their own ways of life.

Because of Tetsu's sacrifices I have been able to pursue my own interests and enjoy a rather stress-free life...  and all of these blessings have been because God has given Tetsu health and talents and wisdom and a loving heart.

We will be in good spirits celebrating with friends and food.  But I know all, my good and devoted husband, my children's caring and steadfast father, my friends' loyal companion; he has been guided and protected by God.

Thank you Lord.

And thank you, Tetsu.

5/20/2018  --  2 Corinthians 3:16, 18

“Whenever...they turn to face God as Moses did, God removes the veil and there they are—face-to-face!...  ...Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.”
2 Corinthians 3:16, 18

When I feel the need for God in my life and when I draw near to Him, God will reveal more and more of Himself.

When I see God more clearly and when I give Him my heart to transform, He changes that heart and makes me more into what He wants me to be.

This is not a instant change.  God is using my life to daily, hourly, moment by moment, make me more into His image...  Sparkling!  Shining!  Brighter that bright!

5/19/2018  --  Philippians 3:12

“I do not mean that I am already as God wants me to be. I have not yet reached that goal, but I continue trying to reach it and to make it mine. Christ wants me to do that, which is the reason he made me his.”
Philippians 3:12  --  New Century Version

I get to thinking...  "Why make goals?  God has it planned already "

My goals are planned so that I stay focused... I prioritize my time (precious time from God) and do not waste it away.

My goals are planned so that my faith stretches and my reliance on God deepens...  this is what I think God wants me to do (and then pray for guidance).  This is what I will move toward believing that God will empower me and bless me.  Actually, how much the better if the goal is lofty (make big goals!), it makes God's power all the more evident.

My goals keep me rooted, knowing what I want not just following along with whatever someone else thinks my day should be.  Just like "if you don't believe something, you'll believe anything" is true, if I don't establish my own goals I'm going to be flittering around trying to do everyone else's goals.

5/18/2018  --  Zechariah 4:6

“...You will not succeed by your own strength or by your own power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD All-Powerful.”
Zechariah 4:6  --  New Century Version

So I know that I can plan as much as I want but unless God directs me I am not going to get anywhere.  It is God who puts my desires into actions and He enables me with talents and timing and situations and other people.  He gives all these gifts so I don't have to fail under my own will power.

Trying harder is not going to do it.  Trusting and depending on God's power (not will-power) is the key.  Seeking God's will is important (thus the Bible reading) and having godly people around me who will teach, support, comfort and be there when I need them (and vice versa) is essential for staying on the right course.

5/17/2018  --  1 Corinthians 10:31

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31  --  New Living Translation

No matter what my plan is, no matter what my goal, it has to be in line with God's.  If I want to be blessed, if I want to succeed, then I need to make sure my will is seeking out God's will.

A plan that is for someone else's benefit, a plan that brings myself or a loved one closer to God, a plan that will show other' God's power and mercy... these are the goals I should seek.

My life has not been given to me to live for myself but to bring glory to God and the best way to do that is to make sure my actions are infused with love.  Love for the other person, love for God, love even for myself.

"Do everything in love."  --  1 Corinthians 16:14

5/16/2018  --  Proverbs 18:20-21

“Words satisfy the mind as much as fruit does the stomach; good talk is as gratifying as a good harvest. Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.”
Proverbs 18:20-21  --  Message Bible

I have a group of friends that meet together ostensibly to study English but in reality sharing, comforting, uplifting, enjoying...talking.  We often say, and our families say, how wonderful it is that we have each other and what a blessing and relief it is to be able to share our whole selves through words and presence.

The words we speak to one another are MORE than satisfying.  They teach and enlighten, they guide, and they give food for thought.

In this friendship of ours we don't actually CHOOSE to make our speech positive and life giving, but God has brought us together as cheerleaders in each other's lives.

5/15/2018  --  Luke 6:43-45

““You don’t get wormy apples off a healthy tree, nor good apples off a diseased tree. The health of the apple tells the health of the tree. You must begin with your own life-giving lives. It’s who you are, not what you say and do, that counts. Your true being brims over into true words and deeds.”
Luke 6:43-45  --  Message Bible

Just getting my words right, my vocabulary "christian" does not make me a follower of Christ.  Just doing good also does not make me one of Jesus' family either.  I must BE one with God, abiding with Him, letting Him guide me and mold me.

Even in parenting, a child does not learn from what a parent says and does so much as from seeing who that parent IS.

BEING a lover of books oneself does more to teach a child about reading than telling him to read...

BEING is my goal, not doing and not saying.

5/14/2018  --  Isaiah 65:1

“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’”
Isaiah 65:1  --  New International Version

Sometimes I get the feeling that I am not doing enough to stay tuned to God's will.  That there is a lacking in my enthusiasm or my spiritualness or my efforts and that is why I don't hear God's voice....  I don't get clear messages.

I know that this is wrong.  NOTHING that I do makes me closer to God.  He can get through to me whenever He wants.  There are no barriers He can not overcome, no distances He cannot step through.  How good to know that EVEN when I do not seek Him He is there.  EVEN when I do not call to Him He is calling to me.

This gives me hope for myself, for my loved ones who do not reach out, for the country I choose to live in which does not know Jesus.

Thank You Lord for being here.  In Jesus' name, Amen

5/11/2018  --  Hebrews 4:16

“So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved grace, and we will find help.”
Hebrews 4:16  -- Contemporary English Version

God does not judge us.  He judges Satan and evil but our acceptance of Jesus has put that all behind and all we need to do is go to God for help, protection and guidance.  There is no need to be ashamed, there is no need to be afraid or wary.  God has all planned and known and He invites us to reap His peace and joy everyday and into eternity.

Come to God.  Come BACK to God.

5/10/2018  --  Proverbs 26:2

“Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse does not come to rest.”
Proverbs 26:2  --  New International Version

What is a curse, and have I ever been cursed?  The word brings up images of voodoo and tribal incantations, things far from my modern life.  Anger towards me? Evil?

I do know that God has placed His banner of love over me and I have nothing to fear.  Other images...  God's wings of protection, angels standing guard.  The Holy Spirit abiding in me.  All these things are my fortress and strength against powers opposing God.  My decision and the source of peace is only to stay close to Jesus.

5/9/2018  --  Luke 18:7-8

“Now, will God not judge in favor of his own people who cry to him day and night for help? Will he be slow to help them? I tell you, he will judge in their favor and do it quickly. But will the Son of Man find faith on earth when he comes?””
Luke 18:7-8  --  Good News Translation

The Bible tells me to be persistent in my prayer, and yes, I see even more clearly that once or twice is not enough.  I must keep on keeping on!

But it also says here that God will move quickly and I'm sorry, but I just don't see that.  God moves too slowly for me and then I feel guilty for wanting my instant culture to overflow to God's workings.  On top of that I do sometimes feel like I'm playing a game.

"God's timing is not my timing."  "His moment is a thousand years in human counting."

I even spout off these phrases to others... as if I am protecting God from what appears to be a failure to answer prayers!!!

Anyway, today I see again that persistency is the key and I guess I don't need to understand God's timing.

5/8/2018  --  Luke 11:10-13

““Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This is not a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in. If your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing—you’re at least decent to your own children. And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?””
Luke 11:10-13  --  Message Bible

Going over the basics of praying...

Do I bargain with God?  Yes, I do.  'God if You'll do this then I will believe completely...'

Am I direct?  No.  'God, please bless my family.'  What does that mean?!?  'God bring my son back into a relationship with You!'  'God, change that person's heart so that she will return to You.'

Is prayer a game?  Sometimes I think it is.  'If I ask God for such and such, He might answer that prayer by asking me to do something I don't want to do.  I'm better off being vague rather than committing myself...'  Such strategy!

So my lesson learned for today?  Be direct.  Don't try to out guess God.  Trust that He wants the best for me, for the people I love, for the people HE loves.

5/7/2018  --  Luke 11:9

““So I say to you, ask and keep on asking, and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking, and you will find; knock and keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”
LUKE  11:9  --  Amplified Bible

It is human to get discouraged.  What I want, what I've asked for doesn't come about.  Well, a lot of things wouldn't come about with one try!  If Tetsu hadn't kept asking, I wouldn't have married him!  If we hadn't looked at house after house, we wouldn't be living here.  If I hadn't kept working through unsatisfactory attempts at machine quilting, I wouldn't be enjoying the process now.

It's so easy to say, "I tried that once.  It didn't work."

"I tried changing my bad habit.  It didn't work."

"I tried going to church.  I didn't feel anything."

I tried praying for my family.  They still haven't come back to Jesus."

ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH!!!  Jesus says to keep on!  Keep on praying, keep on seeing, keep on doing, keep on hoping!

"KEEP ON" and "IT WILL".

5/6/2018  --  Luke 11:5

“Then He said to them, “Which of you has a friend and shall go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,”
Luke 11:5  --  Modern English Version

I DO have a friend whom I can go to at midnight.  God is awake and willing to talk at any time and I need to remember that He is not just powerful and omniscient, He is also my friend.

I don't need to put on airs, I don't need to make an appointment.  God listens and advises.  He keeps His hand on my shoulder when I cry and when I pout.

My Redeemer, Savior, Friend

5/5/2018  --  Luke 11:1

“Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.””
Luke 11:1  --  New Living Testament

Do you have a certain time and place to pray?

I do and don't.  I come home from crosswalk duty and sit at the corner of my sofa in a quiet house and 'pray' for five minutes.  My mind wanders and my day seems to get planned...  I pull myself back to the praying purpose with requests fro blessings on my children, guidance for my day

Is this praying?  I had thought 5 minutes would develop into 10 and so on, but I find 5 minutes about as much 'inactivity' as I can focus on.

On weekends, with Tetsu home and the tv going I find quiet time harder.

God, teach me to pray in all times and places.

5/4/2018  --  Romans 15:20

“I have no interest in giving you a chatty account of my adventures, only the wondrously powerful and transformingly present words and deeds of Christ in me that triggered a believing response among the outsiders"
Romans 15:20  --  Message Bible

Hmmm.  I wonder if I've got my priorities wrong.  I've always considered my blogging to be an account of what God is doing daily in my life... the beauty, the joy, the relationships, the challenges.  But I also see it as a quiet way to witness (in an extremely humble way) as I am definitely not a soapbox evangelist.  I guess I hope that readers will read between the lines and see God's work in my life.

Is this a cop-out?

Number one... I DO get caught up in the daily adventures and recounting and it is phony to think I am trying to witness.

Number two...  the blog's message is pretty mundane and self-centered.

Number three...  I don't see a great believing response, that's for sure!

But I do still believe as St. Assisi said...

"Preach the gospel at all times.  when necessary, use words."

So I'm not going to start preaching that's for sure...  still... timidity isn't so great either.5/2/2018  --  1 Timothy 2:1-7

“The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know...  ...This is the way our Savior God wants us to live.

He wants not only us but everyone saved, everyone to get to know the truth we’ve learned: that there’s one God and only one, and one Priest-Mediator between God and us—Jesus..."
1 Timothy 2:1-7  --  Message Bible

There are people that I think will never come to know Christ.  What is the point in praying for them?  All my wanting will not change them.  But how much MORE does God want them!  And God can and will claim them!

I really need to know more about how to pray, how to make my heart sing.  God tells me to do this, I want to be an effective pray-er and I want to see God do what I think is impossible.

Thanks be to God that He loves ALL of us enough to act in our lives.

5/1/2018  --  Isaiah 6:8

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I. Send me!"”
Isaiah 6:8

I have never much liked this verse.  Probably because it was the chosen motto for a high school church youth group which I thought was cool until I realized I didn't really want to do anything God told me to do.  Also because as I had volunteered to be secretary and was given the job of typing up the directory and mission statement, and then I procrastinated and had to have a youth leader lecture me on responsibility... well, all that left a bad taste.  I ended up with a guilt complex and felt I'd let everyone down.

I never noticed until now that the verse before this one ends... "Gone your guilt, your sins wiped out." (Message Bible)

I always can start again.  This time I want to answer God joyfully and with intention.  "Here I am.  Send me!"

4/30/2018  --  Psalms 37:23-24

“The Lord guides us in the way we should go and protects those who please him. If they fall, they will not stay down, because the Lord will help them up.”
Psalm 37:23-24  Good News Translation

There are so many things I don't know...  which is an understatement!  But even simple things I don't know...  like how to love my husband better, how to make sacrifices for others...  how to use my time and money.  It seems like with over 60 years of life on this earth that I should have gotten these lessons learned.

The point is to move forward, always asking God for guidance, not worrying about being foolish or making a mistake.  God will direct me if I ask Him.  God will protect me on my way.  God will help me when I do get out of His will.

4/28/2018  --  Psalm 62:8

“Trust in him at all times, you people! Pour out your hearts before him! God is our shelter! (Selah)”
Psalms 62:8  --  New English Translation

God loves us to come to Him, not only is praise and adoring but also when we are disappointed and down.  Opening my heart to God is the greatest show of trust and reliance.  He is waiting.  He is yearning for my voice.

Selah...  a time to pause and praise.  A time to wait and rest.

4/27/2018  --  James 3:9-10

“My dear friends, with our tongues we speak both praises and curses. We praise our Lord and Father, and we curse people who were created to be like God, and this isn't right.”
James 3:9-10 --  Contemporary English Version

I am not one for much cursing...  at least not in public...  so I don't go around blasting at people.  But do I see the people around me whom God created to like Him?  And when I don't, do I tend to complain and gossip?  God made all of supposed, even the most difficult.  If I can praise my God I can respect and honor His beloved people.

4/26/2018  --  Job 7:11

““Therefore I will not keep silent; I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.”
Job 7:11  --  New International Version

It is good to know that God doesn't hold our complaints against us.  He sorrows when we sorrow and He understands our disappointments and despair.  In fact He is glad that we come running to Him instead of hiding our feelings and trying to buck up.

A characteristic of true love is being able to show one's true self and still be assured that the love won't change.

4/25/2018  --  Psalms 68:4

“Enjoy GOD, cheer when you see him!”
Psalm 68:1-4  --  Message Bible

The Bible tells us to 'rejoice in the Lord' and 'exult in His name.'  But I am not always sure what that means.  Be happy in the day God has given me?  Keep my heart praising and worshipping?  I try to do that too.

The Message Bible says to 'enjoy God.'  I respect God.  I love God.  I fear God but do I enjoy Him?

It is easy to enjoy God's gifts and that may be my start.  How much more satisfying to enjoy God's unwavering presence, to enjoy abiding with Him.

'Enjoy God, cheer when you see Him.'

Okay.

"Hallelujah God!!!!”

4/24/2018  --  1 Chronicles 16:15

“He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations,”
1 Chronicles 16:15  --  New International Version

God remembers His promises to us.   Time and time again in the Bible it says 'God remembered...  God remembers...'.

Do I remember?  When things are not going right do I forget that Jesus loves me?  That the Holy Spirit is guiding me?  That God wants to bless me and give me the best?

All the stories of the Bible tell of how He's worked in people's lives.  All of nature shows me His greatness.  God doesn't change.  He remembers me...  I choose to remember Him.

4/23/2018  --  James 5:16

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
James 5:16 --  New International Version

'...powerful and effective'.  To do what?

I do not feel or see that my prayers are very powerful nor effective.  But then again, I don't think they are supposed to be able to change things anyway.  God does that.  This is why even devoting myself to prayer time my mind wanders and I seem to spent it planning my day.

'No, no Tanya!  Get back on track!'

If prayer is not about changing God's mind or a magical power then why does the Bible say it is effective?  Effective maybe for changing me?  Maybe this prayer time is for healing my heart, making it more willing to be at peace with what God decides...

I will continue to pray.  I will continue to wrest my mind from wandering.  My goal is to be at peace with God's plan for me.  May He use this time to mold me.

4/21/2018  --  Genesis 1:5

“God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.”
Genesis 1:5  --  New International Version

Have you ever noticed that the first day began with an evening, and THEN a morning?  I never noticed that.

I think my day begins with morning...  that's what the clocks and calendars say... human inventions.  But god's first day began with evening... a time of rest.

I go to bed ready to shed the stress and tiredness of the day.  I rest when my body says it can't take anymore.  But maybe I've got it backwards... or maybe me language mindset is just off.

I sleep to become re energized.  I go to church to be revitalized.  It is all one and the same in a way.  But if I think of prioritizing my rest times... sleep to optimize daytime, sabbath to tune me into God's will, then maybe those times of quiet will become sweeter and have more of an impact in my routine.

4/20/2018  --  Daniel 3:17-18

“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us... But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”
Daniel 3:17-18  --  New Living Testament

I am certain I will never run to gods of stone or gold for help.  I will only depend on Jesus as my hope and savior.  I know He can...  whether He will or not I DON'T know...  and I shouldn't really even care.  Whether God does what I desire or expect shouldn't change my faith that He is able, He is good, He is working things out because He loves me and He is in control.

I am more fearful that in desperation I might seek security in finances or in other people or in medical last ditch efforts.  I don't want to worship anything but Jesus.

4/19/2018  --  Psalms 8:1

“O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth, Who have displayed Your splendor above the heavens!”
Psalms 8:1  --  New American Standard Bible

As the days become warmer and the morning light arrives earlier, we are somewhat awake and taking the first walk of the day when the sun has just risen.  The air is fresh, the sky is streaked with soft colors.  It is wonderful to be alive!

At late dusk we sometimes drive home and see the crescent moon, a single shining star hanging over the darkening countryside.  A time of peace and coziness descends and I am thankful for another day sustained by God.

God shows Himself in His creations.  Hallelujah.

4/18/2018  --  Mark 5:41

“Taking the child’s hand, He said [tenderly] to her, “Talitha kum!” --which translated [from Aramaic] means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!””
MARK 5:41  --  Amplified Bible

The Bible doesn't say who this little girl.  Did she even know about Jesus?  Had her father's faith been hers also?  We don't know what she became after her resurrection...  Was she a faithful witness for Jesus?

Those are all the story lines human interest stories love.  What is important is that Jesus took pity and gave her life.  It doesn't matter who she was or what she became.

Jesus said to me also "Tanya, get up."  I wasn't twelve nor physically dead, but He saved me from eternal death and gave a life with Him...  a now life and a promised heavenly life.

There was no reason for Jesus's touch and He already knows what I will become.

4/17/2018  --  Isaiah 56:6-7

“And as for the outsiders who now follow me, working for me, loving my name, and wanting to be my servants— All who keep Sabbath and don’t defile it, holding fast to my covenant— I’ll bring them to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. They’ll be welcome to worship the same as the ‘insiders,’ to bring burnt offerings and sacrifices to my altar. Oh yes, my house of worship will be known as a house of prayer for all people.”
Isaiah 56:6-7  Message Bible

God welcomes all us who truly wish to worship Him and only Him.  I don't have money and I don't even have the situation where I can serve Him in our church...  Sometimes I feel like an outsider though that is only my own ever changing "feelings".

It doesn't matter that I am not the same as the other Christians.  I follow Him.  I love Him.  I ache to be His good servant.

And God welcomes me!  He calls me in!  He gives me daily joy.

4/16/2108  --  Colossians 1:1

“I, Paul, have been sent on special assignment by Christ as part of God’s master plan."
Colossians 1:1-2  --  Message Bible

I, Tanya, have been sent on special assignment by Christ as part of God's master plan.

I think it is important that each of us puts our name into this verse.  It is true!  God put us in this place and time and situation to do His work.  It is our mission, our assignment.  There is no one else He wants to use in this house, in this neighborhood, in this country, more than me for my job.  The assignment requires me to keep my ear bud plugged in so that I can move in an instant to His will.

I also don't know when my assignment will end but when it does God will reward me for my service.  "Well done, my good and faithful servant.  Enter into my house with rejoicing."

Nothing is in vain.  Nothing is wasted.  God uses all of me.

4/14/2018  --  Luke 12:15, 19-21

“Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.””
Luke 12:15, 19-21  --  New Living Translation

Greed?  Am I greedy?

But maybe by the world's standards I am greedy.  We in well to do countries have so much wealth and food and possessions that there are thousands of books on how to lose weight, how to get clutter, how to organize stuff, how to invest savings.  And the other half of the world doesn't know where they will get food or live.

Especially now, when we are facing retirement is a few months, it is easy to think, "we've worked many years and saved and now we can relax and live off our retirement with no cares in the world...  we have enough for the next 20 years at least."

A rich relationship with God will make my life joyful and worth living.  A rich relationship with God means have to look honestly at how I spend the gifts god has given me FOR OTHERS.

Lord, is there a giving plan I can take on?  One that we will feel joyful about?  I am weak and unable to make the leap alone.

4/13/2018  --  Ephesians 4:31-32

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [perpetual animosity, resentment, strife, fault-finding] and slander be put away from you, along with every kind of malice [all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malevolence]. Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave you.”
EPHESIANS 4:31-32  --  Amplified Bible

I honestly don't think I have a problem with anger.  At least not now...  So in this Biblical list...  bitterness?  No...  Wrath?  No... Clamor?  Animosity?  Resentment?  Strife?  Fault-finding?  Slander?

Wait a minute.  Fault finding... my patchwork group can get pretty gossipy and catty.  And slander?  Well, though probably all of what we say is true, I certainly wouldn't want the parties talked about, there in the conversation...

No one in that group is mean nor spiteful.  Each person is kind and helpful and tender-hearted.  It is the habit of chatting and the ease at talking about people rather than activities or, dare we attempt, ideas.

What to do?  Try to shift the conversation?  Gather up my stuff and walk out when the gossip gets going?  Speak to someone about the problem (which is sort of gossipy in its own way...  there is a perpetrator...)

4/12/2018  --  1 John 1:8

“If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.”
1 John 1:8  --  New Living Testament

Fellowship with others requires truthfulness.  And communication.  And I guess here, the Bible says it requires knowing ourselves so that we can communicate and be honest about ourself with others.

I label myself as a sinner... but I don't think of myself as being a sinner.  I have angry thoughts and impatience and selfishness but I don't make it a habit to sin against people or God.  Am I deluding myself?

At any rate, I also label myself as being saved.  And it is a shame if I have been given this righteous label but still choose to walk alone avoiding God.

Lord, help me to see myself as You see me.  Sinful yet Your child.  Wandering yet with You beside me.  Help me to recognize where I need to change.  In Jesus' name, Amen.

4/11/2018  --  Matthew 15:8, 18, 19, 20

“‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you..."  --  Matthew 15:8, 18-20 --  New Living Translation

Thinking of purity again...  so much of what I say is really just a filtered version of what I think, what is in my heart.  It is scary to think of people's reaction if they knew all my thoughts!  But Jesus knows just that!  And He loves me still!

That's not to say I shouldn't do some heart healing.  If my heart is clean I shouldn't have to use so many filters!

My heart is made for God and I want it to be used by God.  Asking Him to clean it is the first step.  Refusing to dwell on damning thoughts and vices is probably the next.  (With God's help.)  Knowing the model of Jesus' pure life and staying close to Him in prayer is probably going to be an important part of getting/keeping my heart right with God.

4/10/2018  --  Hebrews 4:14, 16

“Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers...So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.”
Hebrews 4:14, 16  --  Message Bible

I'm sort of at a loss when I see people turn their backs on God and go back to their small regretful lives.  They think that God will not forgive or will not love or will not have space for what they consider their flawed personalities.  They believe He will not or cannot help.  They would rather return to their self-condemnation.

I have been saddened but I will not push or argue or try to convince...  I'm not evangelistic enough for that.  I know God can change hearts and use other people to help my friends...

Take the mercy that God lays out and where you know the joy resides.  Accept the help that your heart longs for.

4/9/2018  --  Matthew 5:8

“God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.”
Matthew 5:8  --  New Living Testament

What is purity?  Pure means 100%.  No additives.  No dilution.  No blending.

Worshipping God with a pure heart means that He is my center, my focus.  It is NOT the music. (Though I tend to think it is).  It is NOT my feelings, like I FEEL God's presence one Sunday and not the next.  It is not deeds nor sacrifices.

Worship is simply a pure adoration of God's power, Jesus' life and death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit's presence in my life.

Pure and simple.

4/6/2018  --  Romans 8:35,37-38

“Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.”
Romans 8:35, 37-38 --  New Living Translation

I have memorized these verses and taken comfort in them.  Knowing that there is nothing that I do or don't do will ever change God's love for me is a great assurance.

What about friends and family members who have turned away from God though?  God does not change but humans change their minds or find new things or become rebellious.  Is it even something I should be wondering about?

My fears for today...  will I live as a light of Christ today?  My worries for tomorrow... will my loved ones return to God one day?  "NOTHING can separate us from God's love."  Leave it all to Him.

4/5/2018  --  Exodus 13:21

“The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night.”
Exodus 13:21  --  New Living Testament

Light.  When I am sad or worried or hopeless, do I see God's light?  It is there.  Light can't be swallowed by darkness and I know God's light is never extinguished.  If I can't see it it must mean that I have my eyes closed, my heart's eyes closed, to God's guidance.

God has given me blazes to follow... hmm.  Blazes on a hiking trail.  Blazes of fire so to keep Him in my sight and also to lead me to safety.  God knows what I need in joy and in difficulties and He has provided.

4/4/2018  --  Nehemiah 8:9-10

..."Don’t mourn or weep on such a day as this! For today is a sacred day before the Lord your God."  ..."Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!”
Nehemiah 8:9-10  --  New Living Testament

It is true that there is a lot to be sad about in the world... and we humans tend to choose worry and seriousness and pessimism before we choose joy...

But the Bible says that the joy of the Lord is our strength and if there is any time that we need strength it is when things aren't going right!

So many times the Bible tells us to choose joy.  Make the conscious effort to have fun.  Be happy!  Smile!  Think positively!

Glum thoughts don't much change things anyway and how much better it is to look back on my life and be able to say,

"Great life Lord!!!  Thanks so much!  It has been a joy."

4/3/2018  --  Luke 24:25-27

“Then he said to them, “So thick-headed! So slow-hearted! Why can’t you simply believe all that the prophets said? Don’t you see that these things had to happen, that the Messiah had to suffer and only then enter into his glory?” Then he started at the beginning, with the Books of Moses, and went on through all the Prophets, pointing out everything in the Scriptures that referred to him.”
Luke 24:25-27  --  Message Bible

Hmm..  not a very "holy" translation of these verses, but sort of the way I feel.

I attended a Bible study group yesterday, four people being Christian, four non-Christian.  The message was about the resurrection (it being Easter) but somehow the discussion turned to Darwin's theory of evolution and the non-Christians just couldn't get past that.

How I believe about that issue is very small compared with the overall glory of Jesus' purpose on earth and for me specifically, but a wall is a wall for some people and we couldn't move on from this "logic".  I felt rather simple and grumpy and attacked when maybe I should just feel grateful for my own "simple" faith and my trust that I don't have to know the answers to everything.

There is a process to belief I suppose...  even Jesus began at the beginning.  I need to see people with love not judgement.

4/2/2018  --  1 Peter 2:21-25

“This is the kind of life you’ve been invited into, the kind of life Christ lived. He suffered everything that came his way so you would know that it could be done, and also know how to do it, step-by-step. He never did one thing wrong, Not once said anything amiss. They called him every name in the book and he said nothing back. He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right. He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going. Now you’re named and kept for good by the Shepherd of your souls.”
1 Peter 2:21-25 --  Message Bible

Things that stick with me in this passage...

That Jesus was never a martyr.  His purpose, and He knew His purpose, was to take our sins and remove them forever.  It was not something just DONE to Him.

Jesus didn't take our sins because He loved us or because He felt sorry for His poor, lost people.  He did it because it was the ONLY way to bring us back into a relationship and eternity with God.  There are no other paths up the mountain.

3/31/2018  --  Matthew 26:38

“Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.””
Matthew 26:38  --  New King James Version

No one can know or understand what Jesus was thinking or feeling as he waited for His time on the cross.  He is unique as the ONLY one that could do this job.

"Stay here and watch" were His instructions.

Stay with Him while He battles Satan for the last time.  Stay with Him while He rights the wrongs in the world and which sorrow Him so much more than they do me.  Stay and watch as He does overcome death and human suffering.

Jesus does not ask me to understand the suffering of the world.  He does not want me to judge the speed nor the ways that He brings His kingdom to earth.  My job is to stay and wait and pray and trust.

3/30/2018  --  Isaiah 53:3

“He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.”
Isaiah 53:3  --  New Living Testament

I am SO good and looking the other way.  I hate to see pain and suffering.  I walk away from TV news.  I refuse to read books and see movies about war and suffering and poor wandering people and animals.  (Always animals in there.). It is a phobia, an obsession.  But is it what God wants me to do?

Sometimes I think I should take up a cause, right a wrong, help the world.  But I truly fear that even the mantra ”God is with me.  God is working through me." will not get me through the engulfing grief and panic.

So I look the other way and wonder if I am leaving Jesus behind me in His plans.

I WILL continue my mantra.  There ARE things I cannot run away from.  I PRAISE God for taking the responsibility, taking on all the sorrow in this world.  I beg Him to ease the world's suffering.

3/29/2018  --  Luke 22:38

“You are those who have stood by me in my trials.”
Luke 22:28  --  New International Version

I know that Jesus stands with me in my trials.  But what does He mean when He says "you have stood with me in my trials"?

I think this comes back to fears... always fearful that something bad is going to happen and running from the possibilities.  Or maybe it is running from the chance of failure...

If God is with us though, isn't it Him also that is facing the trial?  And am I just going to run away and avoid the dark possibilities and leave Him alone to find someone else to do His will?

Believing that the situation is controlled by God, having faith that Jesus is with me through means I need to be with Him through it all too...

3/28/2018  --  John 15:13

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
John 15:13  --  New International Version

This is one of those verses where maybe the translation makes a difference in how I perceive God's instructions.

I've always read this verse as meaning a true friend is someone who, like Jesus', is willing to give up their life for someone.  Stories of heroics come to mind...  I'm afraid I cannot think of many people I'd give up my life for, but I certainly hope if the time comes that I'm not weighing out the degrees of friendship in a life death situation!

Instead, though some translations say, "die for one's friends", most times the verse is translated as "laying down one's life for one's friends" or "give his life for them."

This is already a principle in my life!  If I have a choice of staying home and sewing or meeting with people, I will choose people.  If my schedule is interrupted by a friend's request, the answer is already there... arrange my schedule for my friend.

Using my time or my talents for friends will always take precedence over saving whatever it is for myself.

Giving my life doesn't necessarily mean I have to physically die!   And that would only be a one time thing anyway!  How great that I get the choice daily!

3/27/2018  --  Luke 18:34

“But they didn’t understand any of this. The significance of his words was hidden from them, and they failed to grasp what he was talking about.”
Luke 18:34 --  New Living Testament

These are Jesus' disciples we are talking about!  Jesus had told them what was going to happen to Him and they didn't understand!  Even face to face!

I actually don't think this is such a terrible thing.  Did God ever say we needed to understand what His purpose is to move ahead?  To do what He says?  I don't think so...  we just need to know (believe) that He is right and good and His plan is the one we are going to follow.  As the disciples did.

There is a conundrum in my mind...  I loved "The Purpose Driven Life" and I applaud the thinking that we should make and reach out for goals.  But aren't we really to put aside our purposes, stop striving and quietly live the flow that God's will takes us?

Not understanding doesn't have to affect my obedience.

3/26/2018  --  Psalms 5:3

“In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”
Psalm 5:3  --  New International Version

Thanks to an accountability challenge with a friend to read the Bible daily and pray daily, I have made it a custom to sit down before my day really starts.

I'd better not be feeling so smug about my praying habits because I realized that by the middle of the day I can't even remember what I'd been praying about!  So much for waiting expectantly!

It is good that my prayers are not just rote repetitions but if I'm not even aware when God answers them what does that say about being thankful to Him?

I don't know if Post-it notes are needed or a prayer book but I do need to be more deliberate, more meditative in my praying.

Thank you Lord, for all You have done, for listening to me ramble, for forgiving me when I brush by all Your blessings.  Help me live with a yearning, gracious heart.  In Jesus' name, Amen

3/24/2018  --  John 4:23

"That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship..."
John 4:23  --  Message Bible

God knows who I am and He knows what I am thinking and feeling.  "Acting" like the holy Christian, praying all high and mighty with fine words doesn't fool Him a bit.  When I am angry I need to tell Him so.  When I don't understand, there is no sense pretending that I have given it all to Him in acceptance if I'm really resenting my situation.  Being honest is what pleases God, not false piety.

3/23/2018  --  2 Corinthians 1:21-22

“It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.”
2 Corinthians 1:21-22  --  New Living Translation

There are so many promises God has given me.  I struggle to remember them all but hope that when I need them they will come to mind quickly.

The hope, the assurance that I WILL remember God's goodness, is because of His Spirit within me.  My own memory will fail, but because of this gift of the Spirit I don't have to rely on my memory.  The Holy Spirit in my heart is the seal of God's ownership.

I'm forgiven because You were forsaken
I'm accepted, You were condemned
I am alive and well, Your Spirit lives within me
Because You died and rose again.

Amazing love, how can it be?
That You, my King would die for me.
Amazing love, I know it's true
It's my joy to honor You
In all I do, I honor You.

3/22/2018  --  1 Peter 1:3

“Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is so good, and by raising Jesus from death, he has given us new life and a hope that lives on.”
1 Peter 1:3  --  Contemporary English Version

Hope is so important.  It is what energizes us, focuses us, gives us reason to love and live.  But there are times when we fall into hopelessness...  Illness, disaster, uncertainty.

I know that my purpose for attending church is to worship God, but my life is filled with renewed joy when I carry hope home from the service.  Through songs and prayers and messages I am reassured, I reaffirm, I remember the hope that sometimes slips through the cracks in my troubles.

Isn't that what the church, what Christians ourselves should be?  An oasis of hope.

My Redeemer lives and He is my hope.

3/21/2018  --  Matthew 27:32

“On the way they met a man named Simon who was from Cyrene, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭27:32‬  --  Contemporary English Version

What does it mean to carry a cross?  I have read somewhere that a cross is something one chooses to carry not something that's forced upon a person.  Being sick with cancer is not carrying a cross...  claiming someone else's burden for your own however is.  This scripture doesn't seem to hold true with that thought though...  Simon was forced to carry Jesus' cross...

At any rate, though Simon was forced, he later rejoiced that he was given the task of easing Jesus' trials and recognized Jesus as his Savior.  He later had two sons mentioned in Mark 15:21 and the son is mentioned again by Paul in Romans 16:13.  Simon's faith which began on the way to Golgotha later spread to his family!

My cross, whether I've chosen it as an offering to God or even a situation not of my own choosing...  either way, the very hard, the terrible, the feared can be changed to joy and a faith that continues to generations beyond.

3/16/2018  --  Hebrews 8:10-12

““But now I tell the people of Israel this is my new agreement: ‘The time will come when I, the Lord, will write my laws on their minds and hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Not one of them will have to teach another to know me, their Lord.’ “All of them will know me, no matter who they are. I will treat them with kindness, even though they are wicked. I will forget their sins.””
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭8:10-12‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

God gave us a completely new way to relate to Him.  Not by obeying rules and laws and methods and effort, but by taking His goodness into our hearts.  By asking His Spirit to live within us.

Though I love lists and methods and goals and seeing regular progress, all I need is God.  His love and forgiveness allows me to set aside the constrictions I place on myself.  I am not more or less loved whether I complete my tasks or change my ways.  God's new, completely new... not revised... says I need only to depend on Him.

This may seem like the lazy man's way out, but He is responsible for my growth, my actions, my results.  He is my God, I am His people.

3/15/2018  --  Psalms 18:30

“God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭18:30‬ ‭ --  New Living Testament

This is either true or false.  There is no way to say that God's way is SOMETIMES perfect, and the psalmist clearly says that ALL God's promises prove true.

I guess I don't understand when someone says they believe PARTS of the Bible.

That doesn't mean I don't doubt or question.  When I can't get my mind around something in the Bible or with some path my life is taking, I know that it is my lack, not God's.  I can only ask Him to protect me from the unbelieving thoughts and to fill my heart with His perfect peace.

3/14/2018  --  2 Peter 2:2,3

“...You’ve had a taste of God. Now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God’s pure kindness. Then you’ll grow up mature and whole in God.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:2,3‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

I was adamant that my babies start their lives on breast milk and I'm very glad that I did.  I cannot think of a better gift to gives one's children if you can.

Just as babies cry and demand and need to be fed, we should also have the same craving for God's Word and His presence.  God's love brings satisfaction and with it peace.  Nourishing ourselves on God's kindness will give us strength and energy and the building blocks to do the work God sets before us.

3/13/2018  --  Ephesians 5:25-27

“...just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:25-27‬ ‭ --  New King James Version

Jesus sanctified us from the inside-out.  Unless our hearts have accepted Him we cannot be pure.  With His love we have become glorious!  Wow!

I am a big believer in what I take into my body sooner or later shows up in my health.  All the creams and moisturizers aren't going to make much difference to a sugar addicted, carbo-crazed body.

It would be nice to think that my faith in Jesus will make me forever young and wrinkleless and maybe it does in heaven!  While I am still the caretaker of this body I'm going to fill it with good things, just as I fill my heart with God's daily bread.

3/12/2018  --  Ephesians 6:10-11

"...God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way..."  Ephesians‬ ‭6:10-11  --  Message Bible

God doesn't expect me to work at my faith...  He expects me to grow in Him.  He expects me to keep my relationship open with Him.  He expects me to draw nearer to Him.  My effort, (or lack of effort) has nothing to do with how He sees me.  In His love for me He has given me the tools for living in this world... righteousness, prayer, salvation, truth, peace, and of course faith.  They are the 'weapons' that God has laid out.

3/9/2018  --  Revelations 22:17

"The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters.  And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters."
Genesis 1:2  --  New Living Testament

“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone who hears this say, “Come.” Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭22:17‬  ‭--  New Living Testament

So interesting!  I am on a water drinking kick.  I don't know how many times Tetsu has told me I don't drink enough water...  I've been advised by doctors too so it really has been a struggle.  This month I'm using an app called Plant Nanny and "watering" my plants as I drink my daily water.

Look!  In the very first chapter of the Bible, water is mentioned!  And also in the very LAST chapter!  Water is good but God is the water of life and He has given himself freely to us!

Keeping myself hydrated, body (with water) and soul (with God) is essential for my well being.  As I give my body what it needs and craves, I will also give my soul what it thirsts for.

Thanking God with every sip of water today!

3/8/2018  --  2 Timothy 1:12

“For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭1:12‬ ‭ --  New American Standard Bible

When waiting for God's promise, there is a kind of suffering...  my heart hurts, I begin to doubt, I wonder if all my faith is only foolishness.

When doubts begin and there is no knowing the future, the one thing I CAN turn to is what I've KNOWN when my heart is joyful.  I KNOW God loves me (even though I might not feel it now).  I KNOW He is almighty.  I KNOW that God has the best for me.

"...for I KNOW whom I have believed..."

I have given my hopes and concerns and heartaches and questions to Him.  He will complete to perfection all that I've turned over, in His time.

3/7/2018  --  1 Samuel 1:16-18

“...I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.” Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.” She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.”
‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭1:16-18‬ ‭ --  New International Version

Hannah knew to open her heart and take her problems to God.  Instead of letting bitterness and worry eat away at her she told God all her concerns.

Do I remember to take everything to God?

Hannah left the temple after speaking with her spiritual advisor, renewed in spirit and happy again.  She left with FAITH!  Eli had reminded her of God's promises and it was enough for Hannah to relax and leave her future, still unknown, to God.  She chose, she was able, to wait with contentment.

Though I don't need to run to my church or speak to a pastor (though those seem like good ideas too) every time worry overtakes me, it is not the place nor the person that makes the difference.  I need to claim God's love and promises and continue living by faith.

3/6/2018  --  Psalms 27:13-14

“I know that I will live to see the Lord 's goodness in this present life. Trust in the Lord. Have faith, do not despair. Trust in the Lord.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭27:13-14‬ ‭ --  Good News Translation

Waiting is hard.  I'm waiting now for some news and I am practically tapping my feet and thinking,

"What is going on?  Why the delay?  Did something go wrong?  I need an update NOW!"

God says to be patient and trust.  I'm not to get upset, I'm not to write my own scenarios, I'm not to let seeds of irritation grow.

I will hold on to God's promise that He will shower me with goodness.  I will trust in His timing.

3/5/201  --  Psalms 30:2

“O LORD my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭30:2‬ ‭ -- New American Standard Bible

Though I analyze why my heart and my mind don't match, though I put in the daily effort to cultivate a forgiving heart... in the end, all I can do is cry to God and ask Him to make my heart pure and like His own.  It is only God's will and not what I do or practice.  He will change what needs to be changed.

3/3/2018  --  Acts 10:43

“Every one of the prophets has said that all who have faith in Jesus will have their sins forgiven in his name.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭10:43‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

It is such a comfort knowing that no matter how I've messed up, how much I've disappointed, God has forgiven me.  If I put such value on the forgiveness I've received, why is it hard to give forgivenesses to someone else?

It seems that it is with my mind that I am giving, but it is with my heart that I'm measuring and more often than not my heart doesn't catch up with my mind...

I will rejoice in my own forgiveness and continue to practice with my actions and mind and hopefully heart.

3/2/2018  --  Numbers 12:13

“So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, “Heal her please, O God, I plead with You!””
‭‭NUMBERS‬ ‭12:13‬ ‭ --  Amplified Bible

Even though Moses and Miriam had argued and there was a break in their relationship, Moses immediately prayed for Miriam when she was suffering.

God tells us to pray for our enemies, whether it is about the relationship or for seeking  blessing for the other person.

My first response should be prayer which is a huge step in forgiveness.

3/1/2018  --  Genesis 50:19

“But Joseph said to them, “Don't be afraid; I can't put myself in the place of God.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭50:19‬ ‭ --  Good News Translation

Reading about forgiveness I can think of other people who need to get off their high horse and forgive someone!  Such a haughty attitude I have, that I don't even read God's Word as a message to me, but to someone else.  That alone shows how I put myself in God's place...  judging, condemning, placing myself on a pedestal.

"Lord, turn my heart to You.  Stop me from seeing Your message as to others.  Let my heart and my eyes only seek Your Word for myself.  Remove the pride from my heart and replace it with humbleness and eagerness to be changed to the image You have for me.  In Jesus' name.  Amen"

2/28/2018  --  Genesis 45:8

“So now it was not you who sent me here, but God..."
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭45:8‬ ‭ --  New King James Version

This is a famous passage about forgivenesses and how God turns things around.  But look, it says that God brought Joseph through and to the present situation.  God felt that the anger and hardship was a necessary path...  for Joseph, for his brothers.

God just isn't waiting around for us to get to the end of our ropes so that he can step in and change something.  He knows and plans it all!  I'm not sure where this leads with evil... God doesn't plan that, but He is the one who uses the trials to make something beautiful.

Joseph recognized that God was behind all his former sufferings and was always beside him during his questioning.  God is behind my broken relationships and knows I don't understand yet why.

2/27/2018  --  Genesis 33:10

““No!” Jacob said. “Please accept them as a sign of your friendship for me. When you welcomed me and I saw your face, it was like seeing the face of God.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭33:10‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

When Esau had last seen Jacob, he had been angry enough to want him dead.  Now, years later, he RUNS towards Jacob and kisses him with joy.  At that show of forgivenesses Jacob feels as if he has seen the face of God.

What happened in the ensuing years?  Jacob had yet to apologize for his wrongs.  Esau wouldn't have known yet of Jacob's wish for reconciliation.  At some point Esau saw the futility of hate and anger and chose forgiveness.

Was it time that was the healer?  Was it a learned wisdom?  Whatever, it depended only on Esau and not on Jacob.

CHOOSE to forgive.  God knows and God can strengthen even in this hard task.  For my own health and for a beautiful shining of God's glory, choose forgiveness no matter what.

2/26/2018  --  1 John 3:17-18

“Children, you show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it. When we love others, we know we belong to the truth, and we feel at ease in the presence of God.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:18-19‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

I often feel that my words are not enough.  When someone is in pain and I try to give them hope, it just seems that words don't do it and I don't think it is just a language barrier.  Especially when someone isn't a believer, how can they understand the love you have for them when you say, "God is here.  He loves you."

I don't want to be a Christian who is clever with words...I want to be servant of Christ who puts HIS love into results.

Doing says more than saying.  Being says more than doing.  I AM a vessel of Jesus' love.

2/25/2018  --  Colossians 3:17

“Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:15-17‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

In other translations of Colossians 3:17 it says,

"Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..."

This means that "in Jesus' name" aren't just words to say at the end of a prayer, the stamp getting the message successfully delivered to heaven, it means cooking, blogging, cleaning, talking, all are to be done in Jesus' name.  I could put at the top of my to do list,

Groceries list in Jesus' name:  buy toilet paper and cat food

To-do in Jesus' name:  call Leiya, wash the living room windows

And instead of grumbling about busyness and chores, I will thank God for the privilege of serving Him in my home.

"Thank you for giving me health to work and the family and friends to care for, all with You in my mind.  In Jesus' name, Amen."

2/22/2018  --  1 Corinthians 13:5

“...Love isn't selfish or quick tempered. It doesn't keep a record of wrongs that others do.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:5 ‬ ‭--  Contemporary English Version

What is the difference, IS there a difference, between forgiving and not keeping a record of wrongs.  I work at forgiving and sometimes am not even sure I have, because I often don't forget.  The wrong that I feel has been done keeps me wary for a repeat, a next time.  And truthfully I've considered that a healthy attitude.  I forgive yet placing the same trust in someone is rather foolish.

Are forgiving and forgetting supposed to be the same?

2/21/2018  --  Judges 2:7, 10

“The people worshiped the LORD throughout Joshua’s lifetime and as long as the elderly men who outlived him remained alive. These men had witnessed all the great things the LORD had done for Israel."

"That entire generation passed away; a new generation grew up that had not personally experienced the LORD’s presence or seen what he had done for Israel.”
‭‭Judges‬ ‭2:7, 10  --  New English Translation

Such a sad epitaph for Joshua.  He loved God so much, he followed Him so faithfully and yet two generations later God's people didn't know Him.

One of my greatest fears is that my faith hasn't been passed on to my children and their someday children.  It is pointless to worry about this and nothing changes what I could have, should have said or done in the past.  I can only pray for them all in the present.  (And not just my physical children, my children of faith whom I've introduced to Jesus yet the seed of faith hasn't grown.).

How others have accepted or not accepted my belief has no effect on my relationship with God.  My obedience is to pray, to stay near to Him, and to trust.

2/20/2018  --  Jeremiah 29:11-13

“I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for. Then you will call to me. You will come and pray to me, and I will answer you. You will seek me, and you will find me because you will seek me with all your heart.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11-13‬ ‭ --  Good News English Translation

God alone knows my future.  And He also knows my desires and hopes.  He knows my fears and frailties and He has EVERYTHING laid out for my good.

My part of the deal is to CHOOSE to trust Him, to go to Him and to know that He is the source of my happiness.

God never punishes us or condemns us for drifting away.  He always welcomes us back.  He is always waiting for us to call for Him.

2/19/2018  --  Psalms 127:1-2

“Without the help of the Lord it is useless to build a home or to guard a city. It is useless to get up early and stay up late in order to earn a living. God takes care of his own, even while they sleep.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭127:1-2‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

God spends a lot of time reminding us to give up worrying and let Him control our lives.  Even so, I tend to worry about getting things done, about schedules and obligations.  I run out of time and am ever so busy!!

I remember a young missionary frustrated to tears because the older missionary always 'complained' about how busy he was...and the younger missionary, lacking language skills and relationship contacts had a lot of FREE time.

"Busy isn't all so great.  It is a way of boasting about how important one is, a round about way of saying the world can't get along without one's presence."

God says to leave things to Him and relax.  In sleep, in trust, in spending precious time with Him.

2/17/2018  --  Philippians 4:6-7

“Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬ ‭ --  Good News Translation

PRAY  THANK  ASK  RECEIVE

When I have problems and my mind goes around in circles, what am I required to do?  The choice is to sit and worry while I move further and further into the "what ifs" or I can turn to God.

PRAY   Sit down, remember that I'm not talking to myself.  God is near and listening whether I feel His presence or not.

THANK   Thanking takes my despair and negativeness and turns it into relief.  Yes, things may not be going the way I want but if I can find something to be grateful for my whole outlook will change and I'll be more attuned to God.

ASK   Asking not only for help in solving my problem but actually asking for a solution puts the responsibility on God and off my shoulders.  He SAID to ask.  He PROMISED to help.  I'm not shirking my duties, I'm giving them to Him.

RECEIVE   Receiving God's peace about a situation may not come immediately but with time I truly think the peace comes.  I hardly remember those major problems I had months or years ago.  Even the painful events are now healed with acceptance and trust.

2/16/2018  --  Jeremiah 2:13

"You, my people, have sinned in two ways— you have rejected me, the source of life-giving water, and you've tried to collect water in cracked and leaking pits dug in the ground."  Jeremiah‬ ‭2:13‬‬  --   Contemporary English Version

When I put my happiness and satisfaction on something other than God, I am just pouring water into broken buckets.  I don't think I do this but I realize how moody and blue I get after an argument with Tetsu.  How I can't keep my mind from going over the details of a broken friendship.  At those times I guess I reject the choice of joy and fulfillment that God offers and chose to despair over my own broken containers.

Help me Lord to always put my joy and purpose in You and not in other people or activities.  In Jesus' name.  Amen

2/15/2018  --  1 Corinthians 3:5-9

“After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭3:5-9‬ ‭ --  New Living Translation

Actually many (most) of the churches we have been associated with have had some problems and divisions.  We have left some churches ourselves because of misunderstandings and anger.  We choose not to get involved in the decision making policies of our church now just so we don't see the grievances...

Why is it that Christians can't get along?  Why is there so much mud-slinging?  Why is bunny hopping from church to church the norm?  Why can't believers be more forgiving?

I've had those questions thrown at me but all I can say (or think) is,

"I am working out my own obedience to God with being loving, being forgiving, being accepting.  I'm sorry but God asked me to take care of my own heart first.  I don't have time to be pointing fingers at others."

"Peter turned  around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved...  ...Peter asked Jesus, "what about him, Lord?”  Jesus replied, "...what is that to you?  As for you, follow me."  --  John 21:20,21,22

I am leaving it to God to make each of our faiths and godly characters grow.  It is good to plant and to water, but God does all the rest.

2/14/2018  --  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Be cheerful no matter what; pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:16-18‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

Being cheerful when things don't come out as I'd hoped is hard.  Sometimes I feel like I'm just "fakin' it 'till I make it".

I look at my day today and think, "well, thanks be to God I'm able to put on a cheerful face even today."  Not 24 hours for sure but I can put on a smile and go on with my day.  It has something to do with truly believing that He knows what He is doing, and also with knowing that I can't read the consequences if the world ran MY way.

And giving up my sadness, is my sacrifice of love to God.

2/13/2018  --  Isaiah 43:1,4

"...don't be afraid. I have rescued you. I have called you by name; now you belong to me.

...To me, you are very dear, and I love you. That's why I gave up nations and people to rescue you.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭43:1, 4‬

This is God telling me not to be sad and worried.  He loves me and cares for how I feel.

I'm probably reading too much into this but these verses are what I'd say to Choco too.  I rescued her from being a stray, I gave her a new name and she became mine.  I loved her and changed my way of life so that we could be together for 13 years.

God is good to both of us.

2/12/2018  --  Mark 1:38

“Jesus replied, “We must go to the nearby towns, so that I can tell the good news to those people. This is why I have come.””
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:38‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

Jesus knew what His mission, His purpose was in life.  Even though He was busy healing, preaching, comforting, He never lost sight of God's purpose for Him...  telling others about God.

Even with all these time saving, convenient devices and appliances, there never seems to enough time for all my busyness. And in all that, I forget what my purpose even is!  Today it is to be joyful in God and thankful for what He's given me.

I need a little extra joy today...  I'm on the brink of forgetting.  Lord, keep us close to You.  In Jesus' name, amen

2/11/2018  --  Ephesians

“So I, the prisoner for the Lord, appeal to you to live a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called [that is, to live a life that exhibits godly character, moral courage, personal integrity, and mature behavior--a life that expresses gratitude to God for your salvation], with all humility [forsaking self-righteousness], and gentleness [maintaining self-control], with patience, bearing with one another in [unselfish] love.”
‭‭EPHESIANS‬ ‭4:1-2‬ ‭ --  Amplified Bible

It is easy to take offense...  a pride welling up in me thinking I shouldn't be treated a certain way.  Being patient is hard too, sometimes it is being patient with God!  And being loving and forgiving is the hardest of all.

Living as God commands me not only fulfills God's instructions, but also projects God's character to others.  On top of that it molds my heart daily to always be grateful.

All this is challenging but as  it says in Ephesians 3:20, it is "according to His power that is at work in us."

2/10/2018  --  Mark 10:36-37, 51-52

“"What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right hand in your glorious kingdom. Let the other one sit at your left hand."

"What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to be able to see." "Go," said Jesus. "Your faith has healed you." Right away he could see. And he followed Jesus along the road.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭10:36-37, 51-52‬ ‭ --  New International Revised Version

How interesting that in all my years of reading the Bible, that I never noticed the parallel in these two stories in the Bible...  Jesus asks James and John what they want from Him and they answer they want honor.  Jesus asks the blind man a few verses later what he wants from Him and the blind man answers that he wants sight...  in other words, he wants Jesus' mercy.

I have a feeling I would answer like James and John.  Already I am thinking... "someday I will sit beside Jesus in heaven."

King Solomon asked for wisdom.  James and John asked for honor.  The blind man asked for mercy.  What is my request?

I really want mercy... I do not need honor.  I really want only to follow Jesus.

2/9/2018  --  1 Peter 5:6-7

“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God [set aside self-righteous pride], so that He may exalt you [to a place of honor in His service] at the appropriate time, casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].”
‭‭1 PETER‬ ‭5:6-7‬ ‭ --  Amplified Bible

I want to cultivate a heart of humbleness.  I want to think about others first and not have my mind flit back and forth to how much credit I'm getting...wondering if people have noticed my efforts or not.

God already has a place ready for me in heaven where I will be serving Him!  What an honor that will be!  I'd better start practicing in this life, the art of humbleness so that I can assume my royal place someday.

2/8/2018  --  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Be joyful always, pray at all times, be thankful in all circumstances. This is what God wants from you in your life in union with Christ Jesus.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:16-18‬ ‭ --  Good News Translation

The verses here I've always seen as how I SHOULD be.  I SHOULD be joyful always, I SHOULD be praying at all times, I SHOULD be thankful about everything.  And then I'm not...  not always... and then I feel like a lousy Christian.

Maybe I ought to look at these words as how I CAN be.  I CAN be joyful always if only I return my eyes to Christ.  I CAN pray always if I remember that my thoughts are always connected to God.  I CAN find things to be grateful for because I know God only has the best for me.

I'm not sure if looking at these verses frees me from guilt or not...

2/7/2018  --  Colossians 1:17

“He himself is before all things and all things are held together in him.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:17   New English Translation

God goes before us (and pulls up the rear too.). He knows the future we have in front of us.  He also controls all things and nothing is by chance.  He even holds me together when I feel like I am losing my bearings, my control and my determination.

GOD IS IN CONTROL.  Always and with everything.

2/6/2018  --  James 1:17

“Every good gift and every perfect present comes from heaven; it comes down from God, the Creator of the heavenly lights, who does not change or cause darkness by turning.”
‭‭James‬ ‭1:17‬ ‭ --  Good News Translation

I understand that every good and perfect gift comes from God, but how about the sad and hopeless situations?  Are they from God?  Can they even be called 'gifts'?

Yes, I think we are to live believing even the hard things come through God. No matter how long He chooses to take, in the end, we will see even those things we want to turn away from, as good and perfect gifts.  For my human sake, I ask God to assure me quickly, but there may be things I never know the reasons for until after I am in heaven.  ...still, isn't that what faith is?  Believing that God will do what He says?

Waiting for God to do something and believing He will do it is the definition of faith.

2/5/2018  --  2 Kings 23:24

“Josiah scrubbed the place clean and trashed spirit-mediums, sorcerers, domestic gods, and carved figures—all the vast accumulation of foul and obscene relics and images on display everywhere you looked in Judah and Jerusalem. Josiah did this in obedience to the words of GOD ’s Revelation..."
‭‭2 Kings‬ ‭23:24‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

This is certainly a good passage for when I'm on a decluttering binge!

"Get rid if it all!  I want to go back to simplicity!"

But Josiah cleaned up his life because of what God said, not because he was overloaded (though that seems like a good reason to me...)

What are the domestic gods that I have in MY house.  Too much TV?  Too much iPhone?  Am I going to toss those out...  well no, not unless I get more urging from God, but I can limit my time, I can put God first before starting other things with my devices.

Losing a phone or breaking a useful object might be disheartening but it is nothing to losing my relationship with God.

2/4/2018  --  Romans 12:1

“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:1‬ ‭ --  New American Standard Version

I love this verse!  I've memorized it in the Message Bible, but every translation resounds with me.  It reminds me that worshipping God is not just on Sundays at church, not just about singing praise songs.

Worshipping God involves my eyes...  seeing his power in creation, seeing people with love through His eyes.

Worshipping God involves my feet...  doing the hard, walking into problems instead of running away.

Worshipping God involves my mouth...  encouraging others, staying away from gossip.

Worshipping God involves my ears...  listening to others, paying sensitive to their concerns.

Worshipping God involves my hands...  seeking to do the things that only I am able to do in the places God has put me.

Worshipping God involves my mind...  choosing to remain faithful, keeping God's promises near me throughout my day.

2/3/2018  --  Acts 17:24-28

“The God who made the world and everything in it, this Master of sky and land, doesn’t live in custom-made shrines or need the human race to run errands for him, as if he couldn’t take care of himself. He makes the creatures; the creatures don’t make him. Starting from scratch, he made the entire human race and made the earth hospitable, with plenty of time and space for living so we could seek after God, and not just grope around in the dark but actually find him. He doesn’t play hide-and-seek with us. He’s not remote; he’s near. We live and move in him, can’t get away from him!..."
‭‭Acts‬ ‭17:24-28  --  Message Bible

God made us and our surroundings so that we could find Him.  His whole purpose is wanting us to be aware of His presence.

So why do I put such effort into seeking God?  If He is not hiding from me then why am I always wanting to be nearer, wanting to know more, feeling that I am lacking insight, even feeling alone at times?

God wants me to notice Him.  I need to open my eyes to His gifts.  I see Him when is see His beauty through my camera lens.  I hear His voice when I recommit to Him during worship.  I feel His love when I am comforted by other believers.

2/2/2018  --  Psalms 139:5

“You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭139:5‬ ‭ --  New Living Translation

There are times when I think no one understands me and even then I go around spilling my heart to people whom I think will be sympathetic.  But why should I expect to be understood by people...people whom I come into contact only at work or only at church or even only in my own home.  There are many sides to all of us.  When you think about it NOT being completely understood is a wonderful thing... it is what makes me unique.

But God is my creator and He knows how He made me.  God is timeless, He knows my past and future and has been there through all.  God knows my weaknesses and strengths, my sins and joys.  He is inside me and guides and protects and empowers me.

And God places His hand on my head and blesses me again today.

2/1/2018  --  Romans 8:18,21

“That’s why I don’t think there’s any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times....Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens."
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:18, 21‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

Thanks be to God, I haven't experienced much suffering in my life.  This statement alone is amazing as I did lose a baby when she was only a few months old.  I am sure that at the time my pain was so great that I thought I'd go crazy, but God has blessed me with assurances of being reunited, and He stays beside me.  I selfishly pray that my life will continue to be blessed and if hardships come, that I will be able to keep my eyes on the coming glories of eternal life with God and loved ones.

1/31/2018  --  Romans 7:24-25

“I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn’t that the real question? The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind, but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:24-25‬ ‭ --  Message

Though God wants me to recognize my weaknesses He does not want me to stay in them and He does not expect me to change just using my own will power.  Because I am sinful it doesn't mean I have no hope.  God knows my desire to live a godly life even though my actions may be far from it.  Even in this dual life, God loves me and tells me not to waste this gift of time with guilt.

1/30/2018  --  Matthew 3:16-17

“The moment Jesus came up out of the baptismal waters, the skies opened up and he saw God’s Spirit—it looked like a dove—descending and landing on him. And along with the Spirit, a voice: “This is my Son, chosen and marked by my love, delight of my life.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭3:16-17‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

How we love compliments.  I post a picture of one of my quilts on my blog and I look forward to seeing comments about it.  Thankfully I'm not yet caught up in the LIKE and DISLIKE world of Facebook...

Compliments are nice but the only praise I really need is from God.  And I already know what He thinks of me.  I am His child, He chose me to be part of His kingdom, He loves me and delights in all that I say and do.

It is true that in the story of Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist at the River Jordan, that God spoke His approval and affirmation of Jesus, but I think those words are also for us believers.  God chose us and marked us and delights in us.

This week whenever I'm given a compliment I want to say thank you to God for giving me the gifts and the abilities to be recognized by others.  And if no compliments are coming?...  well, I still know God adores me!

1/29/2018  --  Hebrews4:12

“For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
‭‭HEBREWS‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭--  Amplified Bible

Reading and meditation on the Bible changes the way I think and react.  God's Word affects the decisions I make and gives me confidence in my decisions.  It is alive, meaning that it influences me daily and gives me nourishment.

I am not blindly trying to figure out what to do based on ancient wisdom of holy men.  I am being infused with the living, energizing, compassionate directions of God!

1/28/2018  --  Psalms 63:2-5

“I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭63:2-5‬ ‭ --  New Living Translation

God loves me.  This short statement should be my source, my beginnings, my energy, my assurance.  In exchange, do I love my God with my whole life?  Is there really nothing more I want nor need?

In my daily life, I find myself unsatisfied at times wondering what am doing, how things will turn out.  Going to church and spending that hour or so praising God gives me a recharge of assurance and purpose and joy.

I will praise You as long as I live!  I will lift up my hands in prayer and thankfulness to You, my Lord and Savior.

1/26/2018  --  Psalm 34:5

“Look at him; give him your warmest smile. Never hide your feelings from him.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭34:5‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

I know where to go when I need help.  I know where to go when I am thankful.  I know to go to God when I want direction, assurance and protection.

I'm not real fond of the term Prayer Time.  It sound so lofty and holy when all I do is spend a few minutes with the purpose of talking and listening to God but actually spend a lot of the time reigning my wandering thoughts in.

It is my reaching out to God and He knows what is in my heart anyway and He knows My thoughts aren't lofty and holy!

I come before You God, just as I am.  Please teach me.  In Jesus' name.  Amen

1/25/2018  --  John 10:2-5

“But the gatekeeper opens the gate for the shepherd, and he goes in through it. The sheep know their shepherd's voice. He calls each of them by name and leads them out.

When he has led out all of his sheep, he walks in front of them, and they follow, because they know his voice. The sheep will not follow strangers. They don't recognize a stranger's voice, and they run away.”
‭‭John‬ ‭10:2-5‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

Why is it easy to be tempted or to start depending on myself or to begin to doubt God?  Satan, using all his instruments lures me and I have become so used to hearing his voice, I am no longer even wary.

We can't erase Satan and his influence in our society, but I can tune my ears to listening specifically for God's voice.  I need to know when something is Biblical.  I need to pray for God's wisdom.  And I can rejoice that the Holy Spirit is in my heart, guiding me, and warning me.

Help me to recognize You, Lord and to know when to run from things that are not of You.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen

1/24/2018  --  Romans 1:21

“They know God, but they do not give him the honor that belongs to him, nor do they thank him. Instead, their thoughts have become complete nonsense, and their empty minds are filled with darkness.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭1:21‬ ‭ --  Good News Translation

Why do we bother to pray?  God knows what we want and need anyway.

It was explained to me that we pray because if we stop we begin to lose sight of God and forget what He has done and is doing for us.  If we fail to recognize that all things come from God and we need only to ASK Him, then our hearts no longer fill with gratitude nor do we glorify God with praise.

Prayer has two parts...  (or maybe three...  I haven't thought this out).  Asking and thanking, and maybe praising if that is different from thanking...

Thank You God that You have heard my prayer and have answered it.  Than You for loving me enough that I can leave all my concerns to You.  You are all knowing and all powerful and You care.  In Jesus' name.  Amen

1/23/2018  --  Genesis 3:4-6

“The snake replied, “That's not true; you will not die. God said that because he knows that when you eat it, you will be like God and know what is good and what is bad.” The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, and he also ate it.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3:4-6‬ ‭ --  Good News Translation

Eve wasn't banned from the garden because she ate an apple.  She sinned by doubting God.  Satan told her that God wasn't good...  that even if He was, He was keeping good things away from her and she would have to get what she really needed by herself.

I see myself when I read this Bible story.  I doubt God all the time.  Is He truly beside me?  Does He really care about piddling me?  If He can do these miracles then why doesn't He do one for me or why does He let such-and-such happen to me?  If I wait around for God He may take an eon or two to get around to my problem so I'd better figure something out on my own.

It is easy to say that if God tells me not to eat an apple, I definitely will not.  It is harder to trust everything to Him, but that is what I am required to do.

1/22/2018  --  Proverbs 12:15

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭12:15‬ ‭ --  New American Standard Bible

In our American world, we raise our children to be independent, to think for themselves, to be accountable for their own decisions.  In Japan blending in with the people around you, going with the flow is the norm.  Neither of these characteristics; independence nor dependence on others; turns one's heart to God's Will.  He is the first and foremost authority and counselor to which I should turn.

When I am confused I don't want to stubbornly rely on my own small knowledge and experience, and I definitely don't want to rely on a group of other people who haven't thought a situation through nor considered God in the matter!  I want to pray, and then listen to my heart and then listen to the advice of others whom I know to be godly people.

I am not always right.  The majority is not always right.  God is ALWAYS right.

1/21/2018  --  Jeremiah 7:24

“But they did not listen or pay attention; instead, they followed the stubborn inclinations of their evil hearts. They went backward and not forward.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭7:24‬ ‭ --  New International Version

I know I have the ears that hear and the heart that wants to listen to God's Words, but am I listening or just assuming?  Do I pay attention to what God tells me to do?  He might say something but I don't chose to believe that the direction comes from Him.  I want to move closer to God and not farther from Him.

1/20/2018  --  Isaiah 30:20-21

“The Lord will make you go through hard times, but he himself will be there to teach you, and you will not have to search for him any more. If you wander off the road to the right or the left, you will hear his voice behind you saying, “Here is the road. Follow it.””
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭30:20-21‬ ‭ --  Good News Translation

God promises to be with me to teach me.  That means He will talk to me, guide me, tell me what to do and where to go.  The Bible says that I won't even have to go looking for communication from God!  He will be easy to see, easy to hear and easy to find.

But I do have to open my eyes and ears...  ask God to reveal Himself through the Scriptures and through other Christians.  There is no limit to how God can reveal Himself to me!

1/19/2018  --  Mark 4:38, 40

“But Jesus was in the stern, asleep [with His head] on the [sailor’s leather] cushion. And they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are about to die?”

Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith and confidence [in Me]?””
‭‭MARK‬ ‭4:38, 40‬ ‭ --  Amplified Bible

How many times have I questioned God's presence or His concern over me.  When things are bleak I wonder if I'm clinging to my imagination, I wonder if even though God CAN, He WON'T because He doesn't care.

this is when the Bible verses I've memorized, the gospel songs I've sung, the Promises I've poured over bring me back to faith.  I BELIEVE and even not knowing is a gift of faith to God.

When things don't look good, (and recently the world's politics don't look so good) I want to keep my faith and not let fear and despair overtake me.

I DO have faith and confidence in Christ.

1/18/2018  --  Proverbs 13:20

“Wise friends make you wise, but you hurt yourself by going around with fools.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭13:20‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

This was a verse that I used to think applied to my children when they were teenagers!  But it is true now that depending on my choice of friends and people I associate, I can grow in my faith or become stagnant.

I have been considering joining a small Bible study group, maybe talking with other Christians on a regular basis about life as an over-the-hill woman with run of the mill problems and challenges.  I want to connect with other Christians to talk about what we've learned and discovered.  I think I'll take the first step.

1/17/2018  --  Galatians 5:13-14

“For you, my brothers, were called to freedom; only do not let your freedom become an opportunity for the sinful nature (worldliness, selfishness), but through love serve and seek the best for one another. For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is fulfilled in one precept, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF [that is, you shall have an unselfish concern for others and do things for their benefit].””
‭‭GALATIANS‬ ‭5:13-14‬ ‭ --  Amplified Bible

God has given me this gift of choice... in this verse it is called freedom.  I can choose to live only for myself...  the "me first" mantra that is so popular, or I can choose to serve.

While I may think I'm pretty good at serving, the root of my humanness is "me first" unless I consciously CHOOSE to think of the other person first.

I am making the effort to apply this principle of doing things for the benefit of others, in my own home...  that shouldn't be hard.  I only have one other person in this house to put before me...  hopefully my choosing to serve will extend to others.

1/16/2018  --  Genesis 12:1-2

“Now [in Haran] the LORD had said to Abram, “Go away from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you [abundantly], And make your name great (exalted, distinguished); And you shall be a blessing [a source of great good to others];”
‭‭GENESIS‬ ‭12:1-2‬ ‭ --  Amplified Bible

God says to step out in faith.  Take the first step without seeing the rest of the stairway.  Walk away from secure things that are known and comfortable and try something different.

The common excuse in Japan for NOT starting something new is "well, it's never been done like that before.  We have no precedent." And then the idea is shelved.

Well, it may not have been done before, but the idea is from God and he promises to direct my path.  Though I like my known world well enough, I want to be adventurous enough to follow leading from God into new quests.

Help me Lord to know when to wait on You, when to stick with a difficult situation and when to take the step away from my own security and into something new, directed by You.  In Jesus' name.  Amen

1/15/2018  --  Galatians 6:9

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6:9‬ ‭ New Living Translation

I am not a quitter.  I can say fairly confidently (God, please don't test me here) that I finish what I start.  Though some things get hard, a sense of pride doesn't allow me to quit.  WHICH IS NOT A GOOD THING!  Pride shouldn't guide me, but faith.  Faith that God has led me to a task and faith to remain faithful to it.

Choosing to stay is an act of faith.  Often quitting is just taking the easy way out and I have learned that if a choice comes down to which is easier... then chose the difficult as that is probably the road God is going to use to stretch and mature me.

Lord, give me the wisdom to know Your will in my activities.  Which are assignments from You to mold me, which are the frivolous urging of my own mind.  Help me to choose staying rooted with You.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.

1/14/2018  --  Hebrews 12:1-2

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith"...

Hebrews‬ ‭12:1-2‬ ‭ --  New Living Translation

There are so many Christians, living and in heaven, who are examples of how faith is lived.  Their stories and histories, their problems and triumphs teach us where we need to stop and think about our own direction.

My direction is to grow closer to God and ultimately be with Him in heaven.  If there is something that is slowing this progress, I want to point align myself again to God's will.  If I have to stop bad habits, so be it.

Lord, help me to stop and look to You before I take any step in my life.  In Jesus' name, Amen

1/13/2018  —  Isaiah 43:18-19

“Forget what happened long ago! Don't think about the past. I am creating something new. There it is! Do you see it? I have put roads in deserts, streams in thirsty lands.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭43:18-19‬  —  Contemporary English Version

What if Cinderella hadn’t gone to the ball?  What if the frog had stayed in his pond?  The story would never have been written, there never would have been a happy ending.

Especially in Japan, there are so many suicides. People who see only the situation in front of them, people who can’t imagine their despair ever changing.

God is not finished writing the story!  There is still a future, there is still a happy ending. On my part (on the part of the person in the darkness of their mind) I need to START. Start something!  Anything!  Taking the step out of the quagmire and asking God to help write a better future is the first choice. Start. Begin. Try.

Things can change.

1/12/2018  --  Luke 4:18-19

““The Lord's Spirit has come to me, because he has chosen me to tell the good news to the poor. The Lord has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to free everyone who suffers, and to say, ‘This is the year the Lord has chosen.’ ””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭4:18-19‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

God has chosen me.

We think that we chose God and God's ways but actually God chooses us... as His children and as His servants to act out His plans.

God has chosen me to tell people about Him...  I'm not so comfortable in this position but with His power I can tell of His love... sometimes just in this blog page.

God has chosen me to be that presence of His love, and that assignment I do gratefully!

This is the year, 2018, when God says He will do great and wonderful things!  Isn't that enough to be excited and joyful and expectant?

He has chosen me!  He has chosen this year!  Hallelujah!!  Praise the Lord!

1/11/2018  --  Romans 12:2

“Don't be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to him.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:2‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

It is good to know that the way I am and the way I think are not set in stone.  I don't have to assume that because I'm not a very emotional person, that I will always be this way.  That because I am a slob now, that that is my lot in life.  God can change the way I think (and act) and  in order for it to not be a painful process, He allows time for the changes.  Changes that I may not even be aware of.

I need to choose patience and a willingness to change.  God will do the rest.

1/10/2018  --  Romans 7:21-25

“I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:21-25‬ ‭ --  New Living Translation

"Everyday I make the choice of forgiveness over hatred."

Something like this was said by an Amish man whose child was murdered.  He, and his community, make the choice DAILY to forgive.  It isn't a one time choice.

I feel resentment towards someone but I've chosen to forgive.  Why is it then when I run into her I look away, or I find no cheery words to start up a conversation.  I run from the situation thinking,

"Didn't I choose forgiveness?  I know I did in my mind, why doesn't my heart follow through?"

Satan is the great accuser.  He tells me that my faith is no good as I can't even 'forgive' a small problem.  God tells me I am His and that I don't need to be perfect.  He knows I am trying and I get a new opportunity each time I run into this person to shape my actions into an expression of love.

1/9/2018  --  Ephesians 5:25

"Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives...—a love marked by giving, not getting...

His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her...  And that is how husbands ought to love their wives...”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:22, 25  --  Message Bible

"Wife, go all out in your love for your husband... a love marked by giving, not getting.  Your words to your husband evoke his confidence.  Everything you do and say should be designed to bring out the best of him..."  --  Tanya

That might seem an odd paraphrase of the scripture on my part, but I'm pretty sure that's what it means.  How do I treat my husband?

"You're here.  Here's dinner.  I did my part of the bargain and cleaned the house.  Watching TV with you is boring.  I'm going to bed."

Already in the back of my head is that my housekeeping is a sacrifice of love to God, but how much more should my behavior with my husband be?

How I treat Tetsu actually reveals my heart toward God.  If I let love rule my relationship by serving him, building him up, and putting his needs in front of my own, then that would rise like worship to God.

It seems odd that it has taken me 37 years to make this discovery.

1/8/2018  --  Proverbs 25:28

“Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭25:28‬ ‭ --  New King James Version

It is a quandary.  The Bible tells us that God is in control...  yet on the other hand, the Bible tells us to practice self control...  it is probably both but where is there a distinction or is there even a distinction?

I have read that the opposite of drifting is discipline.  So, I do not wish to drift away from God nor drift into bad habits.  Wanting to behave a certain way does not just happen...it requires discipline and discipline requires a conscious decision and the self control to do that very thing.

So which is it?  I want to be less moody.  I need to ask God to change this in me and then I need to keep myself from drifting into moodiness.  I need to train my heart and my actions.  (Does "fake it 'till you make it" apply here?)

Lord, how do I train myself out of moodiness?  I see myself drifting into a grumpy old woman and I don't want that.  What is something practical I can do to change?  In Jesus's name.  Amen

1/5/2018  --  Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for GOD ’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track.
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭3:5-6  --  Message Bible

Most other English translations of this verse are "trust in the the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."

Can I choose to trust God with everything associated with my life?  It is an easy thing to do when all is going well, but oh how difficult when a family member is ill or someone I love is going through some hardship.  In those cases I run around wringing my hands, giving advice, praying with a fervor that surprises even me, and trying to understand the why's of it all.

I want to have a trusting, child-like heart.  One that can say like Jesus "Thy will be done."

Lord keep my from always trying to hold up the world alone.  Remind me to turn to You and give me a peace about leaving my concerns in Your hands.  In Jesus' name.  Amen

1/4/2018  --  1 Peter 5:6-7

“So be content with who you are, and don’t put on airs. God’s strong hand is on you; he’ll promote you at the right time. Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:6-7‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

I'm sitting here wondering if I am a control freak.  I have schedules and regimentation throughout my day...  to-do lists, restrictions about eating things, a 10000 steps daily quota of exercise, a weekly quota of laps in the pool.

All this is good but if my satisfaction is only making a check mark next to my goal, if I get down on myself for missing the goal... then something is wrong.  I'm holding on to control and not giving my life to God.

What can I say God?  I know it is a problem.  Remind me daily, HOURLY that You control my life and that I can relax in Your schedule.  In Jesus' name, Amen

1/3/2018  Philippians 4:6-7

“Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬ ‭ --  Message Bible

I choose to grasp onto prayer when worries threaten to overtake me.  Looking at the world situation, the concerns of aging, the challenging future laid before our families, it is easy to try to reason, overthink, plan, plot and develop an ulcer in the process!

"Lord I trust You with my worries.  Settle my heart and mind, and give me the peace that surpasses all understanding.  In Jesus' name, Amen."

I have CHOSEN my word for 2018.  Choose...  Chosen...  Choice...  Choices....  Over and over these words have struck my heart the last few months and so it a was an easy CHOICE.  On my own I often CHOSE bitterness or self-pity or worry.  But this year I want to make the daily effort to CHOOSE God and God's way of thinking.  Joy, Peace, Others, Love, Forgiveness.

1/2/2018  --  Galatians 1:10

“I am not trying to please people. I want to please God. Do you think I am trying to please people? If I were doing that, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭1:10‬ ‭ --  Contemporary English Version

If I am choosing God's way, then I've got to stop worrying about what other people think.  I don't mean to step on others' feelings or opinions but I must be true to myself and true to what God tells me to do and say.

Help me Lord to not back down when I know what You've told me to say.  In Jesus' name, amen.

  1. What an interesting thought--- that it is a gift to NOT be completely understood. Yes, we are a mystery even to ourselves, at least a little. There is always something new to unfold, always more to look forward to, as God is at work making all things new, even us.
