Continuing Thoughts in 2019

12/31/2019  —  Philippians 2:15-16

“...Try to shine as lights among the people of this world, as you hold firmly to the message that gives life...”

I like this version of the passage just because of the word “try”.  There are a lot of things I know God wants me to do but how is the question.

And one way to be a shining light is to hold firmly to God’s Word!

When I’m worried or afraid... hold onto God’s Promises of being near me.

When I have a chance to tell someone about my faith...hold on the promise that God is in me and guides me.

When I have tasks to do, jobs that are pressuring, people who are asking for more and more from me... hold on God’s promise of giving me strength, taking my load, opening the door.


Read God’s Word.
Hear God’s Word.
Meditate on God’s Word.
Believe God’s Word.
Study God’s Word.
Memorize God’s Word.
Apply God’s Word. 

12/30/2019  —  1 John 1:9

It really should be an easy habit to get into.  At the end of the day breathe out in confession the trash and junk that I’ve done and thought and said, and breathe in God’s forgiveness, His purity and His peace.  And then go to sleep, get a good rest and start the next day gratefully. 

Why can’t I remember this?  Do I need a sign above my bed?  Breathe out, breathe in, be grateful, do God’s will.

Wow.  Does that include my complaining?  My swearing?  My gossiping?  My cynicism?  My whining?  Does that include thoughts I haven’t said aloud?  Yes.  It.  Does.

It makes me want to take a vow of silence though that won’t help my thoughts.  

I want praise to pass my lips, and thanksgiving.  I want to remember to be grateful and awestruck at this imperfect wonderful world I live in.

“Anything that drives us to our knees and closer to God is a gift.”  H.

There are a LOT of things that I find hard to be thankful for.  All the little irritations that don’t really bring me closer to anything but a headache.  But all those irritations and challenges, all those big and little things that I can’t control are ideally there to remind me that God is always in control.

God is with me.  God is in me.  God is for me.  Those are the truths to relax in and to be thankful for.

This is an appropriate passage at the end of the year...  set my eyes to the future!  Don’t dwell on past mistakes and problems!

I’m trying to decide on my One Word for 2020.  What do I want to set my eyes on?  What do I want to press towards?

God, focus my mind on what You wish for me in the coming year.  Help me to set myself firmly in Your plans and will.  In Jesus name.  Amen

Yes!  This is what I want!

I want to know Jesus and know what He wants me to do and to be.  I will read about Him and speak to Him and listen for the lessons He teaches me daily... through people, through problems, through triumphs.

What is important to me?  It seems like even the small things I grasp at unable to let go.  (My favorite iPhone app?)

This verse is my beacon but I’m not there yet.  I pray I really will be able to happily give up all for the peace of knowing Jesus.

In the face of a disaster.  Will I be able to give up security, a home, family?

As I grow older.  Will I be able to give up health, independence, loved ones?

I have heard even Tetsu say,

“Well, I’m sure not perfect but I’m hoping that God will accept me into His Kingdom.”

This riled me because NONE of us is perfect and we won’t ever be until we DO get to heaven and besides, getting into heaven’s only requirement is faith in Jesus.  If we humans think that there is a measurement scale that we hope to pass, then we’re missing out on a lot of security and happiness!

I belong to God.  He supplies everything and loves me unconditionally and has ONLY good things for me.  Everything is ok.  I am a believer. 

12/23/2019  —  Jeremiah 23:3-4

““I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will set up shepherds over them, who shall feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be lacking,” says Yahweh.”

The word remnant again...  remain in faith.  Remain trusting God.  

If I remain, there are so many promises the God will bring to pass.

Guidance and sustenance
No fear
No harm
Success in what He puts before me
Abundance

God 100% fulfill His promises.  Remain in Him.  Be a remnant in His plan.

Do I pray for others like this?  Have I ever had someone pray for me like this?

I’m sure this is what I MEAN when I say I’m praying for someone.  But I’m embarrassed to say my prayers aren’t so fervent.

I need to become a prayer warrior.  A warrior who believes in the power of prayer and the worth it has in making differences. 

12/21/2019  —  Philippians 3:12

I rail at myself for not having it all together.  My faith sometimes shakes, my attitudes are often not very Christlike, I find it hard to be loving.

And yet God doesn’t expect me to have everything learned.  He wants me to progress but as long as I’m on this earth that means He has more lessons for me to learn!

I will lean on Him, study His Word, take the examples of His godly ones... and press on towards my heavenly home!

12/20/2019  —  Romans 11:4-5

In Japan, we Christians are a small percent of the population.  Sometimes I feel dizzy when everyone around me doesn’t believe, doesn’t praise, doesn’t wonder at God’s blessings.  

My trip to Nagasaki was a visible reminder of God’s remnants of faith...  the spark that still burned in the Hidden Christians, the hope we few Christians in Japan have for a rekindling of belied and recognition of God’s love and power.

I pray that by God’s grace I press on, I run the race, I hold fast in my life of faith. 

12/19/2019  —  Ephesians 1:11

“In Christ we were chosen to be God’s people, because from the very beginning God had decided this in keeping with his plan. And he is the One who makes everything agree with what he decides and wants.”

Things catch me by surprise.

“Wait!  I didn’t expect this!  I want to rewind and start over!”

But there is NOTHING that surprises God.  He has planned everything and everything goes according to His plan.

I see the now (which is also good... it’s important to live in the present God has provided) but God sees the past, the present and the future as one whole picture.  He has put things in my past to prepare me for my future.  All is for the good of His creation. 

12/18/2019  —  James 1:9

God is teaching me patience.

When things don’t go my way, God is teaching me patience.

When my prayers aren’t answered, God is teaching me patience.

When there is a health problem, God is teaching me patience.

When I interact with difficult people, God is teaching me patience.

When the answers seem easy but no one else understands, God is teaching me patience.

So what do I do?  Trust God, ask for a heart of love, and pray more.

God’s goal for me is perfect peace and perfect patience. 

12/16/2019  —  1 Kings 18:41

Elijah prayed for rain and God sent rain!  Well!  I sure wish MY prayers showed such dramatic results.

But in many ways I suppose they do.  I pray for relief from a cold and with a dose of cold medicine I’m better.  I pray for a safe trip somewhere and hours later I am landing safely in another city. 

Elijah told King Ahab to celebrate because prayers had been answered.  Yes!  Instead of questioning, instead of focusing on the prayers that haven’t been answered (yet!) be happy, be grateful, stay positive!

Hmm..  a reminder of my on-going lack of faith.  NOT lack of my faith...  I truly believe God loves me and can do anything but the question is WILL He?  

It seems so many of my “good ideas” don’t align with God’s will...  I think so and so should do this or believe that and I pray for them but whatever it is doesn’t come to pass. Surely God wants the same as I do (the salvation of someone perhaps).  If the person doesn’t change then I begin to doubt.

I know there is God’s timing and that His ways are not my ways but sometimes I wonder if my prayers matter to Him. 

12/13/2019  —  Mark 10:51

Jesus wants us to be specific in our prayers.  Sometimes I don’t even know myself what I want and I often go to the default, “God, You know all that is in my heart.”

Maybe the purpose of prayer is for ME to learn what I need or want.  For ME to get my heart in focus.

I remember teaching my children to write reports in school... making a table of contents, putting notes on index cards, writing an introduction and conclusion.  The purpose was NOT to give the grading teacher new information.  It was to teach the child how to put thoughts into words, onto paper, to learn to do a similar writing assignment in the future.

The purpose of prayer is not to inform God, it is to teach me how to communicate with God, how to know my own heart in relationship to God. 

12/12/2019  —  Philippians 2:4

It is human to put myself on center stage... the main character of the story.... the sun in the center of the universe.  What a selfish way to exist!  But it is hard to imagine other people’s situations and emotions and thought processes and I don’t think God expects that.

God wants me to look upon others with love and kindness, to step back, to serve, and listen, and be available.  To ask a question and be connected.

12/11/2019  —  Luke 2:20

“The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.”

The shepherds hadn’t been educated nor were they much welcome in the temples.  I wonder if they had any idea of prophecies and knowledge of God.  Had they ever in their lives praised God before?  Talked of God between themselves? 

God changed the shepherds lives in one night.

It is always possible for me to change.  I may think I am set in my ways but in God’s plan I can become anyone He wants me to be. 

12/10/2019  —  Matthew 2:10-11

They really were wise men!

The wisemen realized who Jesus was through their studying.  They didn’t put off their search but knew it was important to follow the star.  They put worshiping Jesus above all else.  They laid their gifts at Jesus’ feet.

I know Who Jesus is but do I daily surrender myself to Him.  Worshipping Jesus isn’t just a one time deed! 

12/7/2019  —  Luke 2:1

“Now in those days a decree went out from [the emperor] Caesar Augustus, that all the inhabited world (the Roman Empire) should be registered [in a census].”

Have I ever realized that though the ruler of the world made the orders for a census, God used the decree to fulfill His promise of Jesus being born in Bethlehem.

God controls the world, He uses the edicts of political systems to do His will!  

Sometimes I feel like the governments of the world are running us in circles (like with my bank regulations and international laws) and sometimes I feel like there isn’t much we can do to make governments wake up...  but I can pray.  I can acknowledge Who is really in control of the world and my life! 

12/6/2019  —  Luke 2:18, 20, 64

“Zechariah said to the angel, “What proof is there for this? I’m an old man, and my wife is beyond her childbearing years.”

But because you didn’t believe what I said, you will be unable to talk until the day this happens. Everything will come true at the right time.”

Suddenly, Zechariah was able to speak, and he began to praise God.”

Zechariah chose to need human proof of God’s plan.  “Impossible!” he said.

I may not always SAY impossible but I think it all the time.  

“God will do such-and-such?  God doesn’t work that way!  That just won’t happen.  No sense asking for miracles when I know I’m only setting myself up for disappointment.  I’d better save God from Himself and not ask so He doesn’t seem so ineffectual.”

Blasphemy!

When Zechariah finally chose to believe God’s promise, he was rewarded with a restored voice, and he immediately began praising God!  

Zechariah CHOSE to trust God’s promise and praised Him at the first chance to do so.

Lord, may I learn today not to put human limitations on You and to praise You at every chance I get.

How caring, how unselfish, how humble Elizabeth was to speak these words.  She herself hod great joy and was the center of attention but she put the rightful spotlight on Mary and on her child to be.  Elizabeth could have been jealous or resentful but she was joyful at what God was doing in someone else’s life!

Don’t just praise God when He works wonders in MY life.  He is working wonders everywhere.  God will bless me with His promises in His time because of my belief. 

12/4/2019  —  John 15:1-2

I think I’d like a simpler life yet when God decides there are things I no longer need... health or talents etc., I balk and want to take back control!  God sees the beginning, the middle and the end and he knows what is needed in my life.

Lord, just like Adam and Eve I always seem to think I need control.  Help me to shed the branches that You know I don’t need.  Help me to remember that all is taken to give me much more in eternity.

I don’t think of God’s Word as being a living, living, doing being, yet this is what the Bible says.  

God’s Word (God) knows what I am thinking and feeling and speaks directly to my situation... 

I understand that it meets my need for guidance with timely missions.  I understand that God’s Word brings me comfort, remorse, wisdom,  courage but how does the Bible reveal my thoughts?  How does the Bible judge my actions?

Lord, speak to me through Your Word.  Teach me how to read Your letter to me to know Your heart.

What am I not surrendering to God?  Everything!  It’s hard to pin it down to just one or two things...

Money?  I tithe.  I try to be a generous person.  I try not to worry about future finances but there is always the “what if’s” that are never answered.

It is easy (easier) to surrender when you have no choice... health crisis for example... but is that even a surrender?  Surrender is when I choose to give something of my life to be more aligned to God’s will.

Lord help me to find one thing today that I can return to You.

I have been considering “surrender” and how hard it is to give up my plans and desires and anything else to God.  

It boils down to my thinking I know best.

Lord help me to accept and believe that You control everything and know what is best for me.  Help me to live with an open heart and open hands.

When I want to hear God’s voice...  Pray and read the Bible.  Trust instincts from the Holy Spirit.  Seek out advice from godly people... 

Lord, You are a God of peace and contentment, not of confusion and upset.  If I still am confused then I must wait on You.  Thank You for giving me a life that allows me to talk to You and listen to You.  Open my ears to always hear Your voice.

When I can’t discern God’s voice, it is good to ask for advise or to run my feelings through godly people.  They have studied the Bible or have Christ’s principles in their hearts.  They will be honest in their love for my concern.

Lord, thank You for the godly friends Ou have placed in my life.  There are many who will pray for me and will know my doubts but assure me of God’s love.  Let me always nurture and value the Christian friends who care for me.  And may I be as valuable to them as they are to me.

11/27/2019  —  John 10:4

It has taken awhile for John (our dog John) to recognize that we are his masters.  We talk to him constantly and reassure him.  We sometimes have to discipline but gradually the more he interacts with us, the more he recognizes us and obeys.

Lord, I am so like John.  Rebellious, untrusting, wanting my own way, not even knowing my own way.  I want to trust and obey You.  Thank You that the more I hear Your voice, the more I love You.  Continue speaking to me and open my heart’s ears to You.

11/26/2019  —  Galatians 5:16

We get all mixed up about hearing God’s voice and knowing what He wants us to do.  God gave us the Holy Spirit, the One who lives within us to guide us.

Thank you Lord for the inner “instincts” that teach me right from wrong, that nudge me in the right direction. Help me to remember they are not “feelings” of my own but guidance through Your Holy Spirit.

If God doesn’t speak to me in a audible voice, then how does He talk to me?

Through the Bible is the obvious answer and that surely is enough reason to read the Bible daily asking God to teach me.

Dear Lord, open my heart to Your Word to know what you want me to do.  Keep me looking at You eager to know Your will and missions.

Guide me today through Your Word, not just as comforting poetry but as Your messages to me personally.

I want to be able to distinguish my own thoughts from God’s.  I want to hear God’s will without my own doubts interfering.

There is really no excuse NOT to pray.  In problems, in happiness, there is always a reason to go to God!  The object is prayer is to align myself to God.

Thank you Lord for this day to grow closer to You.  I praise You for the goodness You show my family.  I ask You to teach me contentment in the problems being alive brings.  Be with my friends who need strength or cheering.  Help all of us in our health challenges.  Keep me living purposeful in You.

Why were there bowls filled with the prayers of God’s people?  Does God keep all His people’s prayers? Are they tucked away to be answered in God’s timing?

Lord, I pray small prayers and large prayers.  Some I expect to be answered, some I fret about because they don’t seem to be answered.  Some prayers are for myself, some for my loved ones, some for the world.  Some of my prayers I even hide, thinking it is not possible,You will not answer, You will not alter the principles You have laid.

All my prayers You hear.  All my prayers You keep.  They are all precious to You.  Thank You.

I love the image of taking a walk with God daily, talking to Him, getting instructions and then one day God says,

“You know Tanya, we are closer to my house than to yours.  Why don’t you come home with me?”

Lord, I want to share with You and tell You about my problems and joys.  I want You to direct me and show me what I’m supposed to do each and every day.  I want to walk with You and talk with You and then someday go to Your home, not to visit but to stay.

Being forgiving and feeling forgiven is an essential quality of peace.  Do I feel forgiven?  Yes.  Am I a forgiving person?  I think so.

Lord, I can’t even recall who I might not have forgiven...  help me not be proud in my complacent nature, let me only be thankful for the goodness You’ve given me in relationships and situations.  Keep my heart always peaceful with You.

I know a prayer that God will answer.  When I pray for someone to be saved, God will answer with a yes.  This is because God desires all to come to Him.  I am within God’s will.

Lord, I thank You that You have reached out to my loved ones and my acquaintances.  They are Your children and You want them with You in eternity.  Sadly there are too many that have not received You for me to list.  You know all who are in my heart.  Mrs. F, M-sensei, S-San, T-San, the ladies I talked with yesterday.  Bring them all into Your salvation.

Why pray?  Because Jesus says to!!  That seems like a good enough reason and there are all the Bible verses showing how important prayer was to Jesus!

God, I am before You again today.  I thank You that scheduling hasn’t become a tussle of sacrifices.  Please continue to bless this joyous time of wedding preparation.

I think of K-San today and ask that You uplift her further.  She knows You.  I ask comfort for C-San who isn’t aware of Your peace and goodness.

I want to be a prayer warrior but I seem to talk about praying more than doing it.

Father, You know my struggle with prayer.  Sometimes I can’t even get focused enough to know what I want to say.  A request, a surge of gratitude, an intervention.

Sometimes I realize how lame my words are.  “I want this.”  “Forgive me for that.”  “Thank You for such and such.”  I know You don’t care about words.  I know I should come joyfully to You in conversation.  Please let me feel Your presence when I come before You.  Maybe I will remember that feeling of joy and a habit will be born.  Is a habit what I want?...

Worrying means that I am not trusting God.  Instead of fretting about something I need to leave it all in God’s most capable hands.

It is hard to find a quiet place, a secluded place.  Even at my daily quiet time each morning there is the background noise of the TV in the next room, the cats are milling around claiming a place on my lap.

Those are just excuses though aren’t they.  Even when I am alone do I think of praying or do I read a book, scroll through the phone, get out handwork.

God probably smiles that I do spend daily time reading His Word, thinking of Him in my life, but prayer?  I have to admit my longing to pray is rather lacking... more of a “God knows my heart and He understands my concerns.”

Hmm.  Lord, I need help in this area.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

I love this song.  I sang it at my mother’s deathbed, I hummed it at my daughter’s wedding march.  

How do I bless the Lord with my soul?  He blesses me, how can I bless Him?  I praise Him, I worship Him, I bless Him with my body by singing and kneeling.  I praise Him,and worship Him, and bless Him with my heart and mind and emotions... my soul.  I praise Him, and worship Him, and bless Him with my very being, the person I was, who is not at all who I am now, and also the future me.  The all encompassing me is my spirit, designed and known fully by God.

When I can’t sleep, this seems a good time to spend praying...  waiting for comfort, waiting for reminders of God promises.

God loves for us to wait on Him and this really means to wait WITH Him.  He is there.  He is just giving me time to spend with Him, to pour out my heart to Him.

I do not choose the time.   God chooses when and how to answer my prayer.  I have to keep repeating this over and over.  I may feel He is slow or doesn’t care but the TRUTH is that He knows the best time and He always cares! 

While I wait, read God’s Word, encourage myself with His promises.  And don’t give up praying!

When I want to understand a crying child, I tell him to look at me as he tries to explain himself.  When I am training my dog, I know it is important that he looks at me when I talk.  When I teach English I tell my students to look at a person when they are attempting to communicate.  When I want to understand a concept I look closely at the person who is explaining.  

Looking.  Focusing.  Seeing deep into someone’s eyes or being seen deeply by someone, this is how we communicate love, understanding, willingness.

I look into my Father’s eyes.  I seek His face.

God knows me so well.  Stubborn, doubting, selfish.  I don’t know about my ancestors but my resistance to God’s leading and my questioning is an ongoing battle.

God is truth.  God loves me.  Nothing bad happens under God’s control.  These are the constant refrains that go through my head as I try to daily choose God’s ways.

Sitting around waiting for God to show Himself doesn’t always work.  (But yes, there are times when we must wait on the Lord.)  Sometimes being close to God means taking action.  Discovering!

I think God wants me to step out of my comfort zone, to find new ways to worship Him, new ways to spend time with Him.  Does this mean a Bible class I’ve never attended?  A suggestion of sharing with another believer? A different Bible version?

Coming to God in any situation makes me glad and pleases God at the same time.

God probably thinks then whenever I come to Him.  I pray to get an answer, I read His Word to receive His wisdom, I listen to sermons while my brain whirls with my own thoughts.  

How often to I pray and wait for an answer? How often do I read Bible verses aware that God is talking?  How often do I spend this time with Him and not start divining my own logic?  (Like now?)

The world is filled with noises and voices and people.  God uses all to speak to me.

Any of us who try to maintain a daily devotion, who feels an empty space when missing Sunday worship, we are God’s people who need to and want to be with Him.  God draws us to Him and we are satisfied I His presence.

I may not have become the Christ-like person God is molding me to be but by my desire to be with Him I know He is recreating me daily.

There are many ways to say that I want to be close to God, He wants to be close to me, I want Him close, He desires me to seek Him out.  It is a dance together, a love story.

My life and what I do has meaning because God directs me and I follow.  How much more I could do and be if I were more in tune to God’s directions.

There are all sorts of lies that can go through my mind at different times in my life.  Some days I feel that God doesn’t love me, some days I feel ready to give up on a promise.  Some days I convince myself that life is a battle or that I shouldn’t enjoy myself or that everyone is against me.  

These are feelings, and feelings are fickle and influenced by outside occurrences and people.

This is why I’ve got to know the truth about what God says on a subject and I’ve got to stick by that truth.  Now is the time to state, in good times.

Again and again the message is trust.  You’d think I’d remember this when things get hard or painful or irritating.

Trust leads to a fuller more joyful life.  Trust leads to peace.  Trust leads to purpose.

Wait with trust.  Pray with trust.  DO with trust.

God has made promises.  The whole Bible is His Book of Promises.

Trust that He will do what He says, that He loves me and will always do what is best for me!

Isn’t it interesting that while God waits for us to come to Him with trust, we are waiting for God to come through with His blessings?

Waiting for God means waiting with expectation, not with concern, not with dread.  

If I stand around wringing my hands hoping for the best but readying myself for disappointment, that is not waiting for God...

If I look around wondering which one of the many great things that might happen will occur, that is joyful, expectant waiting.

God is waiting for me to choose an attitude.  I will wait with expectation.

I like my own schedules and I like to know what is ahead for the day, week, month, future.  Unfortunately for my preferences, things happen suddenly, and then I get irritated and worse fearful.

I need to remember that the most memorable moments are the peaks and pits in my life and actually they are the ones I recall...  God puts peaks and pits where He sees fit and getting out of the mundane often results on a more abundant life.

Rejoice in God’s moments and the timing He chooses for my life.

My friends and I were talking about how we can worship God continually, pray unceasingly, give glory to God moment by moment, delight God by our existence.

It boils down to having a heart of gratitude, saying thank you for blessings, lessons, love.

I want to develop an attitude of thankfulness.  I want to thank God by trusting that all He allows in my life is for my good.

I want each word of gratefulness to blend into the next until there are no ungrateful passages to my days.

Hallelujah!  God’s light shines in this world!

Though darkness and depression are symptoms of illness (and there is no doubt that there are many illnesses God chooses not to heal) that doesn’t mean that the Light doesn’t shine.  

When our world is boxed in by shadows... the very reason that the shadows are there are because God’s light shines somewhere, there is still the warmth of God’s love.  

I pray that those who suffer from depression and darkness will still feel the warmth of Love.

God’s love, family love, the love of us who care.

Things seem fine and dandy right now.  But things don’t always go right and situations change quickly.

I wonder at how humans reassure each other saying, 

“Don’t worry.  Everything will work out.  I just feel it in my heart.”

I pray that God will give me wisdom and strength and peace when there are hard times.
  
I claim the promise that all things will work for good... and that I won’t let negativity prevail.

I think this verse is telling me to use God’s power of love to destroy the arguments that run in my own head.  I get angry at something.  I take offense at something.  My own mind runs away with the hurts done to me the reasons I have to be upset.

I actually need to stop and tell Satan to get out of my head!  God has claimed me as a vessel of His love and whatever slight I feel should be covered in love.  I know this is not easy but maybe in this time of peace I can decide to remember to banish Satan and ask God’s love to flood me when I need it.

I believe that I really want to live right with God but actually when there is a direct message to me (like yesterday’s (Confess your sins), I ball and can’t find the perfect ‘time’ to confess.  Delayed obedience is disobedience.

There is the reoccurring thought in my head about wasting time, so it must be a message God is trying to get me to herd.

iPhone time... well it is relaxing but doing word puzzles, studying Spanish, coloring apps, browsing favorite feeds... what do they do for God?  My other time users... patchwork?  Is it for God’s glory?  Walking... does it help me do God’s will?

Of course scheduling every bit of time leaves a person too busy to spontaneously do God’s will or even recognize it.

What is the proper balance?

If only I could keep in my head that there is no need to dread or fear or worry about things.  There is actually no need to be irritated or annoyed or frustrated because God has only good lined up before me.

All those negative human emotions are connected to my mistaken belief that God will punish me.  Actually, anything “negative” is only God’s way of teaching and loving me.

I have a confession to make.  I get upset when Tetsu goes around doing good...  That sounds terrible but I have my reasons.

We had a huge typhoon here in Japan yesterday.  During the day we did things with Takumi who is visiting but by evening alarms and city alerts were being broadcast.  Tetsu jumped into Home Owners Association Chairman mode and was concerned (and snappy and irritated) for the rest of the night.

This morning the typhoon is gone but Tetsu was still in emergency mode and disappeared (snapping orders at me) to check out any damage to the neighborhood.  None.  He was back later to start sweeping the length of the street though other neighbors had done a bit and gone off to work or back to daily life.  

No, Tetsu wasn’t going to have breakfast with us, he was busy taking care of the neighborhood.  No, he didn’t have time to say good morning, he was busy tearing down a fence that had fallen over at a factory because  it was too early for the factory workers to come and do the job.

I was ready (seconds away!) from starting a huge quarrel about being with his family, Takumi’s only here two days!) leaving the work for other people to do...  it is not his job!

But Tetsu does EVERYBODY’S job.  When I get annoyed with him always doing others’ jobs, he snaps back that I am only willing to do things for my own good, not for others and that I am ungenerous.  We see the same thing in two different ways.

So I prayed to see Tetsu’s good heart (though you can see I’m still sore now) and to tamper my irritation to not develop into a battle while my son is visiting...

And then this verse popped up in today’s devotional...

I don’t get up while it is still dark but I do try to spend time with God every morning around 8:30 after crosswalk duty and before teaching.

I notice I spend the time reading the Bible more than praying and I’m working in that now.  In any event I’m trying to set my day to God’s will and His plans.

God is my strength.  He can and does make me strong.  He protects me even when I’m unaware of dangers.  He is the person I run to for comfort when I am sad or worried.

I venture into my daily life with him guarding.  I return to the rocks of His love when I rest.  I thank Him for His protection, I love Him because He is my Father.

This passage reminds me of the young Swedish girl who is working so hard to get the important people of the world to rethink their attitudes about the environment.  Who would have thought a young high school girl could take on the world’s politicians and send a message to generations?

God does choose those who seem insignificant and uses them to do great things.

I can certainly put myself on the seemingly insignificant list.  What great thing is God planning your use me for?

Here is the phrase I love so much.  “Pause in His presence.”  

When God gives me my heart’s desire, pause in His presence because He is here waiting to see my gratitude.  When God has me wait, pause in His presence and know that God waits with me.  When my prayer isn’t answered as I’d hoped, pause in His presence and understand He sorrows with me and tests my trust.

God is beside me in all situations.

Help us to rely on You and to accept Your answers to our prayers.

Anyone can pray.  It doesn’t matter if I am young or old, strong or feeble, dying or healthy, active or bed bound.  It doesn’t matter what language I speak, or where I live.  It doesn’t matter if I’m educated or cannot read.  It doesn’t matter if I’m at peace or in a panic.  

GOD HEARS ALL

What other gift, the gift of God’s ear and loving attention is so all enveloping, so little dependent on the character of the doer.

Prayer is encompasses all.

When I pray, putting aside a time, thinking about my desires and hopes, placing my cares and joys before God in faith that He hears and cares... it makes Him happy.  God wants to be asked.  He wants to be included.  

Do I only complain to God?  Do I only give Him a To-do list?  That isn’t depending and loving God.  That is using Him as a lucky charm or a magic genie.

Lord, forgive me for being irreverent.  Help me to bring You into every aspect of my life.  Teach me to depend on You.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen

In some Bible versions the word“plans” is used instead of “troubles”.  Whether I tell God of my troubles or my plans, what I am asking for is God’s wisdom and help. 

No matter how the day goes I need God to show me the right way to go, the actions to take, the decisions to make and the wisdom to differentiate between my human desires and God’s will.

Lord, I start this day and everyday asking that you direct me.  Help me stay to Your commandments and principles.  Keep my words a reflection of Your love.  Let my heart be in the peace of Your protection no matter what comes my way.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I really wish I was stronger in prayer and that my prayers were stronger.  It is so easy to slap a “thank you Lord.  See I’m recognizing You.” type of prayer before meal times.  I wonder why I can’t be deeper, more certain, more captivated by praying.

“Let joy be...” to me this means that the joy is there if I look for it, I don’t have to force some feelings that aren’t there.

“Make life...” on the other hand this is a decision I have to take, to learn to make praying as necessary to me as breathing.

“Giving thanks...”  and this should be easy as so often my prayers start with thankfulness.  

One two three.  Start my day, go through my day, end my day on these three verses.

These are pretty humbling verses.  In other translations the words “her children bless her” and “her husband declares her valiant above all” are used.

For one, I can’t say either of my children would bless me though I do feel appreciated.

As for my husband...  ask him on separate days and you’ll get different answers for sure.  I hate to think which answer would tally up higher...

I can only pray for myself to be a good wife and to pray that pressures of the world don’t overshadow the certainty in both of us that God brought Tetsu and me together as husband and wife.

Sometimes I get so dang annoyed with my husband that I am ready to go camp out at a friend’s house!  The irritation list could go on and on if I let it.

On the other hand I know Tetsu’s list is just as long.

Take a deep breath.  We’re committed to our marriage.  There are numerous obstacles we’ve overcome in our 39 years of being husband and wife... language barriers, cultural barriers.  A has-to-always-be-right wife, a domineering husband...

The loss of a child.

When I am most moody I sometimes have to force myself to make another list of the GOOD points about my husband and though I don’t always want to admit it, THAT list is nearly endless too.

By God’s grace we’ve gotten this far.  With God’s help we are carried day by day.  

Concentrate on the good.

It is more likely that I lie awake at night fretting about the previous day’s annoyances.  Or worse, worrying about future problems!

How much more value would it be to use the wakeful hours to pray.  To read God’s Word.  To meditate on God’s promises.

To go to sleep thinking of God’s Word, to awaken with God’s mission in my heart! 

I have heard the phrase L. W. G. W. — Last Word is God’s Word meaning that the last thought of the day should be God’s Word so that it can be ruminated upon and explored in the nighttime subconscious.

Annoyance is my reaction to not having control.  But I know that God is the great Controller and that all comes about well in Him.

Mary was given these assurances from the angel to strengthen her and to give her peace.  Her life was going to change drastically but she knew that God was in control.

After speaking with the angel the Bible says Mary sang (wrote!) praises to her Lord for His goodness.  Mary had clearly already kept a lot of God’s wisdom in her heart.

Store up God’s Word so that it can be recalled quickly when changes come.

Meditating on God’s Word starts by reading or hearing it.  Keeping it in my mind throughout the day might be helped by notes to myself...  in my phone?  On Post-its?  Written in a notebook?

So many “intend to do”s but how many do I really put into practice?

It is true that a lot of God’s messages reaches me by ear through the gospel music that I love to listen to.  Many of my favorite songs are verses that have been put to music and always the truths of God’s Word play over and over in my head.

God talks to me through nature, through people, through the Bible and through music.

I’m not real successful with Bible memorization.  There have been times when I committed myself to it but I quickly forgot when I didn’t keep practicing.

Listening, reading.  We are so blessed to have God’s Word at our fingertips, in different translations and versions even!

If we had been born in another time maybe the only way to know God Word would be by listening.  There were only a few that were educated.  If we’d been born in a different place we might never get the chance to draw near to God’s Word.  Even now there are counties and cultures that ban the Bible.

And yet I still take knowing God’s Word for granted...  choosing a verse hear or there, changing my reading time according to my own schedule.  “Preferring” one version over another.

We live in a wonderful age.  How close is it to Jesus coming?

Reading the Bible allows my mind to learn and focus on God’s plans for me.  

It probably doesn’t matter if I spend time with God in the morning or at night.  Time is all controlled by God.  It probably doesn’t matter if I spend a long time in God’s Word.  He can teach me in an instant if He wants.

It matters that I desire to know God and that I MAKE time to be with Him.  FINDING time doesn’t always work and it doesn’t put God first in my life.

Some Bible translations grab my attention.  God can use “easy” translations just as much as He can use the rich beautiful language of the past.  If the Word of God is living and breathing, it stands to reason that living in my time and culture, some translations will enable me to ponder and reflect.

Recently I’ve enjoyed reading the Passion Translation which often sends a fresh light on a passage I’ve nearly memorized.  I often come back to the Contemporary English Translation and Living Bible.  The Amplified Bible often gives me a deeper look at God’s meaning.

I want to enjoy spending time in God’s Word.  I am grateful that there are so many English options, and I am in awe of the translators in the whole world who are God inspired to bring God’s Word to every corner or the earth.

I come to my time with God knowing that He is waiting for me in our place.  Actually, though I read a devotion and a Bible verse or two, I don’t come away feeling I’ve been equipped by God to go out and do His will.

I think I need to start with prayer.  God knows I struggle from gleaming His daily wisdom.  My mind wanders, my own busyness interferes.  My questions are too deep for the allotted 15 minutes of spending time with God.

Lord, I call on You to help me understand Your Word and how to apply it daily.  Please teach me and touch me and give me an eagerness to know more and more.  In Jesus’ name, Amen

Though it sometimes feels as if God requires us to be patient and suffering in this life while we wait for the rewards of heaven, He actually is promising to use our weak bodies in the life He has given us.

It doesn’t matter that I am old, God will still use this body of mine.  It doesn’t matter if I am sick, God knows how I can be best used.  

It is comforting and eye-opening to know that what I see as feeble is actually God’s very important thread in His masterpiece of creation.

My friend Mrs. T passed away a few months ago.  She was passionate about her faith to the very end and “proclaimed” it with a funeral ringing with evangelism.  I had watched her for months and as she moved closer to her end on this earth her faith grew stronger.

How can this be so? I’ve wondered...  how can Christians who are suffering still tell the world that God can be trusted to protect?  And not just physical ailments...  how do believers of God’s goodness go about accepting tragedy and disaster in their lives.

My hope and my faith rests on the promise that the Holy Spirit will supply me with the same peace, the same joy in my hour of need.  

God gives what we need in His own timing.  I am weak now but with His Spirit I can become brave and strong.

Drinking has never been my problem...  I don’t need alcohol to have a good time but maybe I spend my time unwisely in other ways.

Which brings me to the question of HOW am I to be filled with the Spirit to live in God’s joy and purpose.  The Bible says do it but I’m not so sure how...  by trusting, by asking God to fill me continuously, by being obedient and open to God’s will.

But being filled with the Spirit does not depend on FEELING the Spirit.  How do I know?  Does it matter if I know I am or not?

It should be plain.  I believed Jesus is my Savior.  Believing made me a child of God and entitles me to God’s blessings here on earth and when I return to Him.  Because I am a child of God, He gave me the Holy Spirit to help me and comfort me, so that I am recognizable as God’s possession and also as a guarantee of the future rewards that await me.  

The Holy Spirit is my security in more ways than I can imagine.

I think we are talking of the human heart here... daily life with problems and uncertainty.  

God promises to fill my tired ‘dry’ heart with joy and hope.  He promises to give me and even my family blessings overflowing!

The blessings, the confidence, the comfort, the Hope bubble forth from the Holy Spirit, God’s Spirit, and that Spirit lives within me.

I know to run to God and submerge myself in His promises when problems storm in.  I hope (with my own strength) that I can continue in peace and optimism while clinging to those promises.  I don’t want to waver.  

And God empowers me to rest in hope!  I don’t have to rely on my own strength!  His Holy Spirit lives within me, reminding me Who is in control, what the promises are, and how to press on through all.

The Holy Spirit lives in me.  I don’t feel it or see it but accepting Christ means the Spirit is within me.  This is a special gift allowing me to love like God, to forgive when I can’t by myself, to have peace in situations where there is no understanding.  

How do I “use” the power of the Spirit?  How do I let it overflow into all areas of my life?

My ability to understand what all God can do is much too small.  That’s not my fault.  I am a small creation that wasn’t wired to imagine all.

But God clearly says to pray big, dare to be bold and believe in His power.  This means praying more, asking for miracles, expecting answers, abiding in Him.

God may never answer my prayer, at least in my lifetime.  But if is in accordance with His will, it WILL come to pass and whether or not I see the result, God will honor my trust in heaven.

A lot of problems begin as small sins that I don’t recognize or want to admit to.  Resentment that I pass off pridefully thinking I have a gift of tolerance...  then one day the resentment turns to anger, people get blasted and the sin and the problem gets almost too big to deal with!

I see my own failures so clearly within my own home, in my attitudes with Tetsu.  I want to be loving, patient, peaceful, encouraging, cheerful but I get irritated, put myself first, judge, am lazy etc. etc.

This is another reason to connect with God daily.  He reminds me of what His goal is for me.  He guides me away from too much wavering.

And His love tells me not to wallow in my failures but to remember He is changing me slowly moment by moment.

God is speaking to me but I’m not understanding.  The problem is that I don’t pay attention or I don’t even expect an answer to a question.  

Probably the easiest way to hear God’s voice is to just read the Bible.  Is is plainly known as God’s Word.  Do I have a question, need direction? Then read and read and read!

Another way to hear God’s voice is to hear His teachings through godly people.  Hear the Sunday message with the intent (and prayer) that God is going to speak to me today.  

God speaks through... situations, putting me in places and people that allow me to think... think about my principles, my beliefs, why things annoy me etc.  He is telling me to discern His voice in my surroundings.

And God speaks to me in nature, in peace, in His pure creations.

I may think I am humble before God but do I really ask Him to guide me or do I go about making my own decisions and only stop in prayer when there’s a problem? 

Being humble means knowing that God always knows best, that He ALWAYS has the answers, and that I’d better kneel before him and get instructions before I start juggling my life.

It doesn’t take much time (like I’m too busy to get long instructions from God!).  I just need to say,

“Guide me today.  Please give me wisdom in this day, this decision, this conversation.  I have nothing without You.”

This was a principle I hammered into my own children when they were young.  ‘It is better to say nothing than make a promise and not keep it.’

If that is true in human relationships how much more with God!  He does not want us taking advantage of His kindness!

There are already some things that I know are in God’s will.  Love others.  NOW!  Not when they become lovable.  Draw near to God.  NOW!  He is always near to me.  Take every opportunity to do good.  NOW!  I never know when God will call me home to Him.

Knowing God’s will doesn’t depend on feelings.  If I waited for things to “feel” just right I would miss God’s plan.

Knowing God’s will depends on having a relationship with God and God’s already sent the invitation.  My relationship will hopefully develop as I rejoice with Him, confess to Him, worship Him, think of Him and those include feelings and actions but it mostly depends on love.

God gave me this body.  It is getting older.  I want to keep it in the best shape I can do that it can continue to work for God.

Up until now, that purpose has been “naturally” but recently my body’s issues with cholesterol are escalating.  I had hoped I could control things with diet but it doesn’t work long term and it isn’t really a “natural” lifestyle.

God I want to do Your will.  Should I follow my doctor ‘s advice and go on medication or should I be even stricter with my eating habits?  Now give me the sense to follow your commands.

I get the wrong impression that I have to make great effort to change the way I think, to become the type of person God wants me to be.

But the Bible says that it is the Holy Spirit’s work that makes the changes in me.  And it is in God’s timing that the changes come.  

I guess I can only ask and sit back and wait.  Sometimes that is all the energy that I have.

We each have a reason, a purpose, a ministry for our time on this earth.  My job is to do what God intends for me to do .

Here I am, 64 years old and I’m still wondering about my purpose?  

I think my purpose must change...  for awhile it was to raise my children to walk with God.  For awhile it was (is) to be supportive to Tetsu and make a peaceful home.  For some years it was to introduce children to English and the dreams they could have if they learned the language.

Do I even have to KNOW what God’s purpose is for me?  Maybe I just have to be willing to be obedient to Him.

God is never too busy.  He is in our midst, listening, watching, waiting for us to acknowledge Him in prayer.  I don’t need bells or gongs or chimes to get God’s attention.  I only need a heart that wants to connect and an attitude of reverence and obedience.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to me.

It’s so true that God takes care of each of His animal creations.  I know that, but there is the occasional poor animal that I wonder why God hasn’t changed its situation.  (My personal struggle about animals and how they are treated and live).

Even in my more rational days I think...

“God has decided to send this poor animal to ME to take care of...  it’s the will of God.”

This is far off the subject of how much God values us.  He created all in His kingdom with love.  He values the smallest to the greatest.  Only focus on how He cares for me, not if He’s doing His job elsewhere.  And He DOES value me!

God adopted us!  He accepted us as we are!  It is a waste of my time to try and gain the acceptance of people who all have different ideas of what is or is not acceptable.  I would have to keep changing my colors like a chameleon.  

I only need God’s acceptance and that has already been given to me.

God has graciously put my in the midst of faith filled friends.  In a country with a Christian population of only 1%,  you would think I might be alone in my faith, but we have quite a few Christian friends.  They teach me and show me their faith and I hope I do the same for them.

I do not need a multitude of believers around me... that is waiting for me in heaven.  I only need Jesus and a few close faithfilled friends to help me along the way.

There is much to worry about and a lot of evil in the world.  Instead of contributing darkness, reenergize and add light!

The lusts that tempt young people...  I may be tempted by the lures of the iPhone and iPad.  So much time, so much of my life wasted there.

I know how to pursue faith... by reading scripture, by reaffirming my faith through praises, by hearing God’s message through the pastor.

Pursue love... by interacting with people.

Pursue peace... by making a good quiet relaxed home.

I have read that forgiving someone and trusting someone is different.  

God commands we forgive, choose forgiveness immediately and over and over.

Trust though takes time and must be built together.

I have friends, I have Christian friends, and then I have one or two spiritual friends, the ones whom I go to when I am consumed by anger, by fear, by sadness, I suppose even joy.  Those intimate friends and I share our weaknesses and we together question what God is doing in our lives.

I realize that one of the goals of the women’s group I belong to is to become each other’s spiritual friends..  equally sharing and equally learning about God’s plans in our lives.  Opening up, giving freely of ourselves.

I worship with my church congregation and know that God is with us.  I gather with a group of women monthly and feel we are moving towards God’s will.  I get together we devout Christian friends... and enjoy myself?

Though my friends and I gather and base honor God with our conversation and base our comfort on knowing we all trust God, we don’t actually speak of His presence or His purpose.  It is understood that we acknowledge Him in all we do.  

Is it enough?  Is God among us even when we  don’t consciously ask Him to be with us?

This last phrase struck me though...  what good is my faith?

My faith urges me to consider health.

It is too big a question.  I know I’ve missed some big answers.  Thinking about them requires I look into what my life is about.

God has given me gifts and abilities to be used for others. Each gift adds color and joy to the world around me and they blend together with all the other gift-colors of God’s people!

My life seems peaceful with nothing to fear right now.  Has it always been that way?  I forget.  But even the forgetting means that God has led me through darkness and blessed me with joy that over shines everything.  I vaguely remember despair over deaths of loved ones but look at me now!  

God’s presence has removed the fear and replaced it with joy.  He has done this before in my life and He will do it again and again.

What is God like?  God is love.  So how am I to become? More and more loving.  How does Christ move in this world?  In loving relations, interacting with people.  So how am I to conduct my daily life?  Surrounded by people, learning to love them, giving myself to them.

By God’s grace I think I am a cheerful person... but not complaining?  Not getting irritated?  I fall short in those areas!  

It is easy to be cheerful and uncomplaining when God gives so many blessings, but when things don’t go so smoothly, does that mean I have a right to be irritated?

No.  My faith, my ATTITUDE rests on the conviction and remembering that God is in control of all, even the things that don’t go the way I think they should.

My reaction to the smallest things in my life is my witness of my faith in God’s love.

I feel that this verse is saying, “let God do the work in you.  It is not depending on your efforts.”

At the same time I think God is saying, “salvation is My work and has nothing to do with effort, but growing in faith DOES depend on the choices you make, the effort you put in to knowing My heart.”

Which is it?  Faith and effort... sometimes it seems like two sides of the same coin...

How confident am I?  I am as confident as my memorization of this verse.  When I was a new Christian a boyfriend calligraphed this verse for me making it beautiful with a wheat frond on parchment paper.  I still have that piece of art somewhere... it stayed on my dorm room walls for years.

God has kept me and loved me these 40 some years...  hard times, sorrow, standing alone with few Christian friends...

There is nothing in my future to fear.  God loves me the same as when I first gave my heart to Him and He will love me and care for me til I meet Him face to face.

This verse tells me a couple of things.  Obviously that God will provide, that though Tetsu and I live on our pension and my small income and though we don’t know if our retirement preparations will hold through health problems and unknown expenses, we do know that all is from God and that He has plans for us.

Another message from this verse is that God wants us to enjoy our lives... and that often means using money.  So we aren’t supposed to sit on our savings keeping them for the someday disasters but instead to use what we have TODAY for today.  

I don’t plan to go out all crazy with a spending spree but I do plan to enjoy what God has given me.

I have been running into Yuma-kun quite a lot recently.

There was a time when I took Yuma-kun under my wing hoping to be a good influence on him.  I thought I could make a difference in his life, show him normality, lead him to Christ.  I imagined he would someday become a fine father and man and I would sit back and think I had done something fine.

But as years have gone by Yuma-kun’s life has become more crazy, more unhealthy, more a continuous stream of excuses and issues.  His problems couldn’t be helped with just a friendly home and good intentions.  As he’s grown up I’ve been relieved to let him out of my life.

Was this just pride and conditional love on my part?  If he responded with good choices I was willing to be more involved, as he chose unacceptable (to me) behaviors my interactions have changed.  

Did I view Yum-kun as a child of God or just my pet project?

It is hard to know what to say when someone is grieving...  and usually there is nothing TO say.  

I rationalize my not offering my presence in a situation because I won’t be helpful, because it will be an intrusion, because the person needs alone time.  That might be true but more often than not just showing up is the most important thing.

I remember an old Guideposts story about a neighbor who just came to a grieving family’s house and sat down and polished shoes...  he just did a small task to be helpful and left.  I don’t know if I’m going to go polish shoes at my neighbors’ home, but the story reminds me to show up.

My whole life is a continuous classroom of God’s to teach me His purposes and to ready me for His eternal home.  I learn my lesson by being obedient and by following God’s will.  And though my obedience doesn’t buy me God’s grace, it does give Him pleasure.  I so want to please God with my obedience which is an act of worship.

Some translations of this verse are they if we love God we will obey...  but often I don’t obey.  Do I not love God?  I like the assurance that the more I love God, the more I will be able to obey.

And on top of this the Bible says God pursues us with His goodness and mercy.  We don’t have to go looking for it!  It is always there!

We are at a stage of life when we worry about what the future brings.  How long can we live where we live?  Do we want to move now or do we want to settle more deeply into our surroundings?  Should retirement homes be in our consideration?

Jesus had a special time and a certain place to pray...  

My day starts with walking John, having breakfast with Tetsu and going to the crosswalk... all before 7:30.  I don’t think I’m going to be at my best for time with God in this frame...

Jesus went out to a quiet place.  I can sort of get away from the TV in the sunroom.  That seems to be the best place for my prayer time.

But prayer isn’t just about time and place.  It is about attitude and love.  It is about seeking out God in busyness as well as calm.  It is wanting to be with Him and breathing in His spirit-filled Words.

I must choose to do God’s will before even approaching Him or asking Him what His will is.  I must have the attitude of “willing” to do whatever God expects me to do.  There’s no saying, “wait...  give me a different piece of business Lord.  Your will in this matter I don’t want to follow.”

I know it is easy to say this and yet so often I mulishly dig my heels in about things God wills... 

Lord, give me a willing heart that lives in accordance to You.

I don’t think I am a generous person.  I’m not a stingy person but I hang on to what I have devising whether my future is secure enough to part with something.

Can I part with this money?  If it’s not a great sum.  

Can I part with my time?  If it’s only going to be a few hours.

Can I part with my life?  Well, if God will respond quickly then maybe I’ll give up a few skills, a few dreams, a few pleasures.

God, give me a generous heart that is willing to go past my own measurements.

The wisemen continued to follow the star with JOY as it led them to Jesus.  They didn’t give up.

I get frustrated with a friend who is constantly seeking Jesus or at least seeking meaning in her life and she comes to Christian meetings for answers, but she can never commit.  It is a constant circling of doubt and questions.

But I have to rejoice that my friend is still seeking!  Still following Jesus’ Star!  She will eventually find Him if she doesn’t give up!

Persistence is an important part of faith as so many times we can’t see the results of our efforts.  Believing God is at work and that whatever task He has put me to do is not in vain, that eventually, in ways I don’t expect, God will produce fruit.  

In God’s world, persistence equals faith and faith equals persistence.

Thinking about landscaping... we have to start with what we have.  God can make my life into a beautiful garden.  He knows what greenery is needed, what needs to be pruned.  Instead of giving Him a stony heart or a muddied one, I must change my attitude and give Him one that grows His fruit well.

Hah!  This translation makes me think of John!!  He is always being mulish and making me tug and coerce him along our walks.  He doesn’t want to go TODAY.  He wants to go HIS direction.  Even when I’m taking him somewhere I know he’ll like, (like to Mr. and Mrs. Yanos) he still pulls back and pouts (until he realizes his destination!)

John is a very difficult dog.  I imagine he has been given to us so that I can gain insight in my own mulish behavior towards God.

How I love this translation!  (My quilt isn’t done yet.)

Health depends on giving up guilt and resentment.  Feeling guilty, feeling unforgiving can bring a spiral of mental woes as well as physical ailments.  I can’t always “feel” forgiven but the truth is that I have been.  Stand on the truth.  I can’t always “not feel” resentment but I can ask God to bless the person and remove this thorn in my side...

I would never consider vandalizing a church.  It is God’s house!

The Bible says that my body is God’s house!  He lives inside of me!

That gets me thinking... I try to live a healthy life, protecting God’s house) but am I beating it up getting it into shape.  This is a harder and harder job to do because of age and even then when my body doesn’t work as I’d want, (high cholesterol) is that a reason to pout and be angry with it for betraying me?

I still need to rethink this cholesterol medication my doctor wants to put me on.  Is it in God’s will (to keep this body running smoother) or is it only a convenience that allows me to slack of my usual vigil (and prideful) care?

Jesus says that He is the truth.  He doesn’t say Christianity is the truth or that He will show is how to get to the truth.  He is the truth.

People seem to look for the elusive truth of life when Jesus is standing there waving his arms and saying.  I AM THE TRUTH!

God gave me a brain to use in considering, in planning, in discerning, in choosing.  I get to play a part in my own life and I get to acknowledge God’s greatness.  My brain allows me to appreciate and to express gratitude for God’s care.

Why get caught up worrying if I’ve matured enough as a Christian, if I’m following God’s will daily?  God puts the desire to follow Him into my life.  He guides me to act according to His will.  What I am doing for Him of course pleases Him.  He is in control of all.

Jesus’ statement is simple.  “Follow me.” And Matthew responded simply.  He got up and followed.  

We think things to the bone.  Should I do this, should I do that? What will happen if I do such and such? 

Some questions need contemplation and wisdom but this command of Jesus is a simple one for me.

“Follow me and be my disciple this day and every day.  Give your life to me to guide and teach and supply.”

I choose to follow again today and throughout the rest of my life.

I was at a small Christian Bible study yesterday and I realized after I’d come home that we hadn’t prayed together.

I don’t find great joy in praying aloud with other people but that may be because I’m not a great prayer warrior to begin with.  And I know there are others who don’t feel comfortable praying with people but it seems to me that God has let us in on a great gift of praying with friends.  I want to be willing to speak to God when others are around.

““In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.”

Forgiving is easy to talk about when there isn’t anything particular to forgive...  but when I’ve been hurt by someone I find it hard to get past just the words.  I keep repeating to myself and to God that I forgive yet because my mind keeps going back to the situation I wonder if I really have.

At any rate, I also know that forgiveness has to be a conscious act and that I need to choose it each and every time.

This verse is more often memorized as “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

But what does it mean to  follow God’s will?  It is allowing my life to be directed in God’s purpose.  Making God’s purpose MY purpose.

Don’t just repeat this prayer.  Mean it!

It seems to me that a lot of my friends, Christian friends, are tired.  Or worse, they are in ill health...  maybe from doing too much? Getting too tired?  

God says He will give us rest.  It seems to me that a good indicator of being out of God’s will is being tired and feeling overwrought.

When I feel overwhelmed, or just “whelmed”, that is the time to go to God and ask, “what should be my priorities here?  What am I doing that doesn’t need doing right now?  What am I doing just to prove to myself how much I matter to people, to You?”

I matter to God no matter how much or how little I do.

I don’t like to hear about people trying to do things perfectly, thinking if it is not perfect it isn’t good enough.  God is the only One perfect and we will only reach that goal when we are in heaven with Him.

Thanks be to God, my faith seems solid.  I’ve made the decision to reject any questioning, any uncertainty.  My faith is God based and I won’t change it no matter how much I don’t understand something, don’t like the way things are going.  I refuse to let Satan in through THIS door!  I may have other portals that seem less protected (busyness, worrying) but I stand with only what the Bible says.

When I get out my camera in order to take pictures, I SEE beautiful interesting things.  At other times, with no camera in my hands, the scenery just passes by.

I want to live knowing what God is doing in my life, not just observing life.  God revealed His plans to Moses while other people just saw what was in front of them.

Placing myself in the forefront and focusing on God will make all the difference in really seeing.

I haven’t developed Christlike qualities yet. I don’t have continuous peace. I can’t seem to love everybody. I still put myself selfishly first.

But God is working on me and in me.  He has promised to change me and make me perfect for His eternal kingdom.  It seems too slow and too gradual to my eyes, but God chooses His time.

There are things about my personality, about my life that I’d like cleared away.  I’m too touchy, I’m too judgmental ...  I’m sure God could make me in His image in a blink, but He chooses not to.  He renews me daily, SLOWLY making me into His image.  And He definitely knows what He’s doing!!!

There is a reason for God’s timetable.  Things He CAN do in a blink of His eye He chooses to wait upon.  God knows what I can accept, He knows what I can do, He takes His time out of love for me.

I have a problem with the praise songs where I sing, “I surrender all to You.”  More accurately I could be singing “I’d LIKE to surrender all to You” or “I SHOULD be surrendering all to You”.  

If what I surrender is my all then it is very small and I wonder what name to put on the rest that I keep aside.  

God knows how much I have, how much I recognize in myself.  What I give Him will grow and multiply as He matures me.  He is not hindered by time.  I give Him what I can now and He accepts my all in eternity.

It is so easy to worship God in my joy!  I want to sing and raise my hands!

But I hope that my faith will hold true in despair...  I don’t want to be tested but I also don’t want to be a fair weather follower.  

In times of gratitude and in times of fear, I want to always seek out God and worship Him.

Why would God conceal Himself?  He hid himself from David, He puts His children into times of dryness today.  Why not let us live on the mountaintop always exalting in His presence?

The time of eternal togetherness with God will come.  I will rejoice continually.  On this earth I am driven by moods and feelings, but feelings are not worship.  I may feel close to God on a given Sunday and feel blah on another but my worship should not change.  I worship God for what He is, not for what I feel about Him.5/9/2019  —  Mark 8:35

We pity people who seem to have no purpose, who just exist.  But life has meaning when we are being used by God, consciously serving others, praying for others, being part of God’s plan.

I remember thinking, “what is the purpose of my mother’s last years of her life?  She just exists...”.  

At some point I realized and was grateful that her bedridden state was teaching me new things about myself.  She was being used by God to mold me (and others in our family) into becoming more caring, more patient people.  God was using my mother to draw my dependency closer to Him.

God can and does use all types of life.

5/5/2019  —  Ephesians 2:10

If the only reason God created us was to be in heaven with him for all eternity, then He would have taken us to our eternal home immediately after we accepted Him as our Savior.  Since He DIDN’T take us immediately it means He has a purpose for us to stay on this earth a while longer.

He has a plan for us to work for Him in our lives.

It disturbing to think that Jacob, as a baby, demanded his own way even before he was born and he grew up to still be rather contentious, arguing with God.  I guess our personalities get formed at birth and we don’t change much over they years!

I see that I too argue with God, struggle to understand Him.  I just have to make things difficult by questioning and by demanding answers. 

I hope that the next time I feel like arguing with God that I will recall Jacob and his childish, self centered behavior.  I hope I remember  that only by being obedient to God can I grow.

We all need to remember that we are valued by God.  It doesn’t matter that I may not work well, or that I am old.  The highest bidder, Jesus, bought me and I belong to Him.  He isn’t throwing me out with the trash.  He says there is a place in heaven for me that He is preparing.

I forget my value sometimes and feel very dumb and worthless but God values me!

Acceptance is an interesting word.  I accept Christ as my Savior.  Actually it begins with Jesus.  He accepts ME just the way I am, then I accept the gift of life He puts before me.  From there, my job is to accept others, with all their foibles and quirks. 

Acceptance by God also means that though I do my best (with God’s help) to accept others, I don’t need to be accepted by them!  If they don’t like the way I am or the way I do things, that’s okay!  God has already accepted me!

As a Christian I stake my faith in believing that the bad and evil that occurs will be changed to goodness.  “All things work together for good...”

God is good and all His plans can only result in good.

I hope my faith is this strong.  That no matter what comes about I will still trust, still hope, still wait on the Lord.  I certainly don’t ever want to be tested like Job but I want to strengthen my faith now so that when hard times come I will stand firm in God’s promises.

In human thought a delay is an annoyance, a sign that things are out of control.  Maybe I have to solve the problem on my own.  Maybe God doesn’t care.

Worry is a sign of doubting God’s love.  I don’t think He will keep His promise so I worry.  I don’t think God can do the impossible so I worry.  ( Wow!  That is basic belief!) I think God has some terrible mission for me to endure so I worry.  

God loves me.  He will do the best thing for me.  He knows all and can do all. My job is to trust and not worry.

How many times do I have to be reminded that knowing God and appreciating His blessings brings contentment.  Trying to do more, trying to get more, trying to be more, makes me tired and short-tempered.

I start worrying every time I read this verse.  Am I tithing enough?  Do I even know how much I have coming in compared with what I put out?  If I’m not tithing enough with finances then does my service, my attitude, my adoration make up the difference?  What does God think of my qualifying myself?  Does this even have to be about money?  I honor God with the best.  Period.

Happiness is not determined by circumstances.  But I can be determined to be content!  At least I can remind myself that God promises to supply all my needs and that wishing for more is going to lead to discontent if I can’t be happy with what I have been given.

I want to be a source of uplifting to my friends without being condescending.  I want to show others their strengths and affirm their challenges.  That seems pretty general...  How about focusing on one person?

I think of M-San.  I see her as one of the most beautiful people I know (really, really pretty!  And not much younger than me!) I see her as a devoted wife.  As I caring and deeply sensitive person.  I see her as one always willing to depend on God!

Now to let M-San know that she exudes these strengths.

Ha!  I balk at that “we who are strong in faith!”  Others might think that because of my faithful church attendance and seeking out God’s will, that I am strong, but that is precisely why I feel so WEAK in faith.  I feel pushed to act more “spiritual”, to take leadership positions just because of my many years of faith, not because of any strength.  I often pray to God “I believe.  Help me in my unbelief.”

I hardly feel I can help someone else with their faith struggles when my own  fades in and out.

Getting irritated about things means that I am Turing myself first in the center of a situation.  Things aren’t going according to MY plan.  I’M inconvenienced!

Another point of irritation is that I think things aren’t going to work out well...  I need to remember that God can even change the negative to the positive.

This seems to me to be an important part of life.  Jesus knew.

Do I know where I’ve come from?  Yes.  I know that I’ve come from God.  He is the creator and author of all.

Do I know where I’m going?  Yes.  I will one day return to God.  

It is the in-between part of life that gets confusing.  Do I know the daily responsibilities of life?  I cheerfully do what God puts in front of me.  My work has its origin in Him.  Do I know the goal of my days?  To please God, to point others to God through His love that I express.

There are frantic times in my life and quiet times.  Right now, thank You Lord, I am in a quiet time.  Not many worries, no troubles in sight...  

Because I am human I know it won’t always be so peaceful.  When problems have arisen in the past I’ve blamed God, I’ve doubted Him.  

I want to store up God’s promises and truths now so that when challenging times come I will be able to stand firm in my faith and be able to have peace over whatever God allows in my life.

How do I learn God’s paths and His expectations for me?  By asking Him.  By spending time with Him!

I try.  I commit myself to spending devotional time in the mornings when I ponder Bible verses, (the result of that effort is this short Thoughts page on my blog) and I listen to the Abide app in the evening daily meditating on a simple biblical truth.

Am I closer to God?  Do I know what He has planned for me?  

I desire God.  I come to Him with an opened heart.

I guess my life all boils down to daily trying to determine what pleases God.  

He doesn’t need me to do great things.  He doesn’t need me to become famous.  Maybe the small things getting done are what makes Him smile.

Surrendering my life to God may be a one time thing,

Surrendering to God means I am giving up my self-centeredness, which can only be a good thing!  So many of the world’s problems stem from the thinking that a person they deserve things.  I fall into the trap thinking that everyone ought to think as I do, that the world revolves around my life...

Surrender to God, surrender my rights.  Gain eternal life, gain a broader view of the world I live in.

Surrendering to God.  So easy to say, so hard to do. 

I don’t think I treat God as an enemy but I hold back wondering what difficult mission He might throw my way as I find it hard to refuse...  Not a pretty picture and I know my view is distorted.

Some versions of this verse say “and let God change the way you think.”  I spend a lot of time trying to change the way I think but I definitely don’t think it is a matter of will power.  God has to do the work and usually it is so gradual that I don’t notice at all.

At any rate, my goal is to please God, to do His will, to follow His leadings.  Putting my mind in alignment with God’s... surrendering, takes quietness and openness, not really a lot of work at all!

It shouldn’t be hard to surrender myself to God.  He loves me, He knows the whole plan, He carries any burden, He is good.  

I get to thinking ‘what if God makes this too hard?  What if I get in over my head and can’t get out?  What if I make the wrong decision?’

I also need to remember that yielding myself to God is not a one time thing.  It is a continual choice (two of my yearly WORDS!) I joyfully continue to give myself to God daily!

What is my job?  I’m a part time teacher, a part time crosswalk guard, a full time wife.  I do a lot of handwork.

Do I spend my days well?  The time gets away from me with dog walking, swimming, sitting at the computer.  

In the routine things of life I forget that my goal is to serve the Lord.  More often I get caught up trying to please my husband, trying to make a good impression on other people.

Lord, remind me that my time is Yours and it is not to be used just for my own pleasure and ego building.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This verse can be interpreted (by me) to mean opposite things depending on the translation I read...  

In one translation I think this means that God has given me gifts to make use of and if I’m not using my gifts then maybe I’m in the wrong situation (or job).  In another translation I think this means that God has put me in a situation and I should be content and find a way to use my gifts no matter how unsuited I feel.

I have always had a “bloom where you are planted” philosophy in life but I don’t want to be just bearing up through situations either...

Discouragement.  Which could lead to depression!  In these busy modern times it is easy to get discouraged but that’s been true throughout history. 

Builders building the wall in Judah were discouraged and the discouragement was accompanied by weariness and physical hardship.  There was so much rubble around them, and they were trying to do everything themselves.

It is easy to get discouraged when we are tired or sick.  It is easy to get discouraged when we are in the middle of confusion.  And it is easy to get discouraged if we forget that God is always with us.

God, when I am discouraged, help me to remember to take time off for myself, to clean away the stumbling blocks in my life and to cling to God who is in me and near me and around me and doing the best for me.  In Jesus’ name, Amen

Faith is more than belief.  Faith is the life I lead.  Saying I believe something doesn’t make me faithful.  Living my life devoted to God in all parts of my life is a show of faith.  The way my life has changed because of my belief is proof of my faith.

This is an often read passage but I get hung up on it.  I understand that one cannot have faith without works but how about works without faith.  The passage doesn’t answer that question.  There are a lot of wonderful people that do good things... but they don’t believe in God or in anything but themselves.  There ARE works apart from faith...

Faith is compassionate.  Faith is practical.  It is not good feelings or uplifted emotions.  It is not words.  If I only feel God’s presence in church singing praises, well, then this is feeling.  My faith is shown in hard times, still relying on God when God’s presence isn’t certain.

I would rather people judge my faith while I die clinging to God than to assume I’m strong in faith because I appear uplifted in church.

What kind of a friend am I?  Helpful sure, but sacrificing?  

Sometimes it is hard to be that close of a friend because someone else already claims the place.  There is no need to try to vie for first place in line!  

Being a true friend takes time, it takes effort, it is a relationship that can’t be pushed.

Speaking honestly is always good but there are some things to think about first...

Is the timing right?  If the person is upset or tired, it may not be the best time to speak my mind.

Connected with timing...  well, I’d be smart to address an issue in private rather than when others are are listening...  I remember this lesson from my child rearing days.  Even the kids appreciated not being scolded in public!  (On the other hand, praising in public was welcomed!)

And finally, when speaking my mind, am I open to being corrected myself?  Do I insist on my own opinion or am I willing to hear someone else’s honest words?

Words are a gift.  They don’t cost money but they are from a person’s heart and they can change the recipient’s world.

Say what you mean and don’t qualify them with empty excuses. Praise, encourage, listen.  Fewer words are more valuable than mindless chattering.

Taking offense, holding a grudge, putting myself first, these are signs of being unloving.  

So someone’s words nicked me a bit...  so some person’s actions caused me a problem... it happens..., and always God uses the incidents for my good and for His good.  

I am put on this earth to serve and putting others’ needs ahead of mine, putting aside my own ‘rights’ is part of spreading God’s love around.

What am I afraid of?  As a child I was shy, even now I look for people approval.  God wants me bold, friendly, willing to step out and make mistakes WHICH HE WILL USE!  Tiptoeing around being apologetic about my opinions, my actions does not hold true with my commitment to let God lead me into all situations and relationships.

What a wonder to see all the children of God’s family in cultures all over the world!  God’s family extends to countries I’ve never been, languages I’ve never spoken.  

I had an amazing experience of worshipping and fellowshipping with people from India, the Philippines, Cameroon, Ghana, France, Sweden, China, South Africa, Korea, America, Germany, and of course Japan.  We were from different churches but we sang hymns and gospel, we danced led by the Cameroon believer, we prayed in English and Japanese.  How wonderful to see God using His people in so many places and so many ways!

I find myself doing things because it is expected of me, not because I think God is calling me to do it.  I sometimes trim my opinions because I know others don’t agree even though God has claimed my thoughts.

I can’t please everyone and it doesn’t really matter if I am disliked for something I do or say (or don’t do or say!). As teenagers we are taught not to bend to peer pressure but even as an adult it is easy to go around seeking others’ approval.

If God is for us, who cares if someone else isn’t!

2/13/2019  —  Philippians 4:8

It is so easy to be negative, to get into the spiral of worry and thinking the worse.  I can’t do this, nothing will work out.  

God says to replace those negative thoughts with positive ones.  Remembering God’s promises, seeing the beauty of God’s world, the love of the people around me.  Two minds cannot live together, I need to let the positive mind win over the negative.

What a statement of faith!  “I am depressed, I am doubtful, I am angry, and for those very reasons I believe in You!”

Coming to God at such times of despair means I believe in His presence.  It means I believe He hears my prayer.  It means I believe I can show my anger and weakness to Him without being afraid of losing His love.

Admitting my despair is my statement of faith.

When I have nothing, health may go, relationships my fade, when God isn’t giving me answers or comfort, what am I to do?

Job lost all and God was silent and what did he do?  In his despair HE WORSHIPPED GOD!!
Job remembered that every blessing had been given to him and he deserved none of it.  If it was taken away the God must have a reason.

Imagine saying, “Praise the Lord!  He has taken everything away!”

God doesn’t want our feelings, He wants our trust.

Not feeling God’s presence isn’t a sign that He isn’t present.  God is always beside me and always knows my thoughts and struggles.  The time of feeling alone is the necessary time to put pull out my faith and allow it to grow.

Will I choose to love God when I don’t see Him working in my life?  Will I continue to Trust Him when I feel I’ve been deserted?  Will I claim Jesus as my Lord and Savior when my spiraling thoughts try to convince me that I’m fooling myself? 

David had doubts, Job had doubts, even Peter had doubts but they are pillars of faith holding fast to Truth, not to feelings.

An acquaintance is suffering from depression.  What to say to her?  She is a strong Christian and this illness strikes everyone.  

I pray for her to see life as a whole, that her story doesn’t end in this funk, that there is a happy ending waiting for her.

She may long for the eternity now yet what is not in God’s plans cannot be forced.  

Lord continue to strengthen my friend with Your love and the love of her family.  Help her to rest and focus on Your rewards for her when she clings to You.  We know fighting an illness is not about willpower but about choosing proper treatments and wise doctors and rest, rest, rest.  Please guide my friend along the path to perfect healing.  In Jesus’ name, Amen

God wants to strengthen us.  He sees us struggling and He knows our thoughts and our pain and our despair.  We might want to give up and hide from God but He knows our true heart (not the one damaged by depression) and He keeps close watch over us.

Stop thinking about it Tanya and start talking to God!  Get to a quiet place and read the Bible.  Pray for heaven’s sake!  You are not hearing God’s voice by just wishing for it!

I think to myself, “Yeah, I want to obey God, be used by Him, be a blessing to others, but for heaven’s sake! I can’t even decern  what message is from God and what is my own idea!  I can’t obey if I don’t know the message is from the Master!”

Noah listened to God.  His faith (which I have) caused him to want to be nearer to God and hear Him.  I want this too...  so I need to stay close to God.  I need to seek out His voice.  Definitely go to the Bible!  Definitely spend time in prayer (and not just my own request prayers).  

Find more ways to tune in to God!

God wants me to act when He tells me to do something.  My actions result in God’s plans being fulfilled and that is good for all around.

Acting on God’s Word also makes me live by faith, trusting Him, trusting my being tuned to His will.  

And living by faith results in me loving God more, wanting to be with Him ever closer.  It is a wonderful circle of being God’s child.

God can and does use one person.  Noah is one example of how God changes the world by using Noah to do His will.  God changes the world, the world in my immediate hemisphere, by using me.  I may feel small and useless, I may stay in the background, but I’ve changed my family’s lives and maybe even my acquaintances lives by things I say or do that I don’t even think about.  I will never know in this lifetime but I believe that God uses all of us.

I know Tetsu and I should have plans for the future but we seem to be going into the future with only hope that things will work out.  Is this faith or is this deceiving ourselves?

The future for the elder is gradual dependency on others... family, care facilities, hospitals.  It is the clear future and yet Tetsu and I don’t have family nearby who will jump in.  It seems prudent to get things in order so that when the time comes the kids can just say, “this is what our parents wanted and planned for.”

God, I need a plan that matches our finances, our preferences, our lifestyles.  Help us to find out where YOU see us in 10 years, 15 years, 20 years from now.  In Jesus’ name, Amen

I look a bit like my mother...  Leiya looks a bit like me.  I can sometimes see personality similarities between my brother and myself.  My father’s words come back to me at odd times.  Takumi’s personality is much like Tetsu’s.  The likenesses between us are partly because of genetics partly because of proximity.

God made me in His image and He puts before me Jesus, so that I know my godly characteristics.  When someone sees me, I hope they can also see the resemblance I share with God’s family.

As I age I see illness and problems creeping in.  It just seems to happen to everyone! Nursing homes, medication, confusion, dependence...  not a really great picture of the future!

God says that He has joy and goodness and mercy ready for me and those are the promises I need to focus on!  Whether in sickness my faith will carry me positively and happily through to the end, or God literally plans to protect me from all that is negative... I don’t know, but that is where trust comes in.  

Trust God to do the very best for me.  And at the end the most glorious home awaits me!

The people we hang out with reflect on our lives...  we try to teach our children to choose friends wisely, but it is true for myself also.  Do I want to be a cheerful upbeat person?  Stick with positive people.  Do I see myself growing short tempered and irritated?  It might be that I’ve become influenced by complaining friends.  Emotions and attitudes are contagious.  For a healthy mind and heart keep company with pure and joyful people!

The bottom line is that I can vow to keep anger under wraps and be angelic in all my relationships but that’s probably going to collapse... when something makes me angry!  Actually God is the only power that is going to change me and my emotions. 

While I can realize that there are habits I can cultivate...(counting to 10, taking a walk, recognizing insecurity) I need to bring my personality and my actions to God. Only with the Holy Spirit can I change into what God wants me to be.

I don’t like to think of myself as revengeful but yes, when I get angry I guess I’m trying to make the other person (Tetsu) regret his hurtful words or actions...  let him know what it feels like!  And that is revenge!

I’m not sure how to keep emotions at bay but focusing on something else probably helps.

The Bible says that we aren’t to get angry easily.  Thank goodness!  If it said not to get angry at all, then I’d have a real problem!

Another thing about anger is that I seem to get angry at the people I love the most!  Tetsu is most often the recipient but I can’t think of people just off the street that I’ve gotten angry with. I think I’ll remember that when Tetsu gets angry at ME!  Love means investing enough to get angry...

At any rate it would probably be better to limit anger levels and find other ways of dealing with frustration...  but anger IS an emotion given to me by God and I’m pretty sure I’ve read passages in the Bible when God got angry too!

It is easy to make decisions by what has gone on before, by one’s own experiences even!  But situations differ, emotions change.  What solid ground is there to root ourselves to but God’s Word!  

Measuring our worth and our results is a grasping of wisps.  I will measure myself by God’s standards, according to what God says I am to Him.

God gave me the gift of time and ability.  Maybe not the ability to do everything but enough to do some things.  He has also given me the gift of experiences, good ones and not so good ones...  the experience is to be used to help others, to be able to teach, to sympathize and to help make God’s world a better place.

I already know in my head not to waste my time comparing myself to others.  (But I do it anyway.)

Paying attention to the job God has given me...  doing the best I can with the resources I’ve been gifted with...  this is my purpose.  Not forcing my work, not doing someone else’s job, not sticking to my own schedule.

I want God’s approval and my own satisfaction.

Living deliberately...  I have some mentors who do just that.  They have given deliberate thought to their habits and routines deciding what is the most efficient, what helps people the most, what God wants them to do.  They don’t just default into doing or maybe even if they do the evaluate often.  

God has given me these mentors as models for me but first I must remain in sync with God’s will for my life.

Living right is striving for God’s approval...  not salvation, that is already in my future, but always seeking God’s pleasure and delight should be my goal.  It includes loving others, relying on faith for decisions and hardships and being a peacemaker in the life God has given me.

We get together with good Christian friends regularly but we don’t particularly start our evenings with prayer or a conscious ‘gathering in Jesus’ name’.  Our conversation drifts back and forth between family news and even Christian beliefs.   Though we aren’t dedicating our evening to God, I believe that He is with us and blesses us with each others’ wisdom and Christian outlook.

Talk, talk, talk.  It is easy to appear a devoted Christian with lots of words.  It is easy to “feel” blessed and uplifted but isn’t the Christian life recognized by the acts performed in love?  God expects us to put our faith into actions...  that is why we are still on this earth.  When He requires me to only praise and worship, then He will take me to my eternal home.

I have chosen my One Word for 2019!  It was a toss-up between expect and continue.  For awhile last week I was thinking that EXPECT was going to be my word because I needed to expect the best from God and actually from John specifically.  But the more I expected from John, the more disappointed I became so maybe expect wasn't as uplifting a word as I was hoping for...

And then I thought PERSEVERE was going to be my word.  Well, you can see how I ended up there.  It is a rather strong word though, sort of grit your teeth and plow through.  I wanted something softer...  a stick-with-it, be-hopeful, don't give up encouragement.

CONTINUE.  Continue on the path God has set.  Continue believing all will work out to God's glory and our good.  Continue in the faith that the principles I've built my life upon are God's truth and hope and salvation for the world.  Continue resting in God's love.

Of course that "continue to be bold for Christ..." clause is more of a goal for me than a continuance but that is a good goal to have in 2019.

This seems like a good prayer to start the year...  keep me focused on the important things in life!  I really do waste too much time on this iPhone, on TV, on worrying, on grumbling.

Now in my sixties, do I have the time to fritter away?  The time God has given to me needs to be used for good, for Him, for the children He has created and loves.

Keep me focused dear Lord!
