While sitting in the waiting room (Choco had been kenneled for a few hours) the vet's Golden Retriever, Clara, spent quite a long time sitting by my side, gazing into my eyes and "holding my hand". I was in seventh heaven. Choco doesn't sit by my side (she can't be quiet that long) and doesn't look anyone in the eye. Clara is a great volunteer dog and I can imagine the smiles she brings to the older people.
This is Chi-chan the Japanese sweet shop's cat where I man the crosswalk in the mornings. Chi-chan is on a harness connected to a long leash and she goes in and out of the sweet shop, sits on the shop step or camps out under the car. The elementary school children who use the crosswalk always gather around Chi-chan and pet her or tickle her with long weeds. I don't know how many times I've had to shoo a group of children into the school grounds before I close the school gate.
"You guys are going to be late~!"
Chi-chan is very popular and accepts the children's adoration gracefully.
"Oh good. Those kids have now gone away and I can enjoy a nap."
It is easy to be transported to Seventh Heaven when being with such sweet animals. They soften the hearts of children and older people alike.
ReplyDeleteIn some care homes for the demented in Sweden, cuddly toy animals with a small hot water bottle inside are often given to restless people. The soft fur, warmth and sweet face has such a positive effect.
I have seen statistics that there are now more dogs in Nerima than children. Pets and especially dogs are good for older people, keeping them active and connected and lowering their blood pressure. Why, then, are dogs ... even on leash, banned from all parks! (they don't kick soccer balls into surrounding houses, climb trees and break the branches, or even climb over the fence to poop in the sandbox). I'm glad there are those who can actually put animals to good use.
ReplyDeleteWhat sweet animals! Therapy dogs are wonderful, aren't they. There are some that are members of our dog club. The dogs visit hospitals and nursing homes often and just sit and bring smiles. So nice!
