Thoughts about the Corona virus

This morning Tetsu and I had a chance to video chat with Takumi and Julieta.  We have been considering whether we needed to contact them about our plans for May or if we should wait to see what they are thinking and find out what they would like us to do.  In the past week or so Tetsu and I have confirmed between us what our options and our desires are.

So...  Takumi and Julieta have had their wedding day set since the end of last year for May 9th.  The tickets have been bought for Tetsu and me to fly into LAX and within 24 hours to fly to Mexico City with Takumi and my brother's family.  Julieta and her family will go the day before prepare.
Less than 10 days ago, Julieta was video chatting with me and showing me the Lazo that she and Takumi and her mother had bought for the wedding ceremony.
Julieta had asked us months ago if we'd be willing to place the Lazo around her and Takumi during the wedding ceremony.  This seems to be a Mexican Catholic ceremony signifying the joining of husband and wife and the long connected string of beads is to be placed around the couple.  (I've checked out how it is supposed to be done on the Internet).
We were honored to be asked and thrilled to see the beautiful Lazo that will encircle our son and his lovely bride.

And now 10 days later as the world changes hourly because of the Corona virus, we are wondering if we are even going to GET to this wedding!  International travel is being restricted, the outbreak is cropping up very quickly, quarantines are being put into effect.  Will there even BE air travel from Japan in early May?  Would Tetsu and I be required to be quarantined after arriving in the States?  For that matter will any of us be allowed to fly to Mexico and then fly back a few days later?

I'm not asking for advice, I'm just listing some of the concerns that Tetsu and I have right now...  concerns that aren't going to be able to be addressed until... well, until things suddenly change again, as has been happening all week.

For me, the bottom line is that I want Takumi and Julieta to have their wedding, large or small, with us or without us.  Tetsu and I don't want them to wait until a time in the future when all the circumstances are perfect.  If we can't attend, well, we will still know they are surrounded by Julieta's family and they will have our love from afar.  It makes my eyes slightly moist to think we might miss this most important day in Takumi's life, but for them to be wed they really only need themselves and God to be present.
Both Takumi and Julieta thought we were being too concerned and maybe the Japanese point of view is bordering on paranoia.  I have my bottle of antiseptic gel by the front door for people to use on their way in and way out.  But it is hard not to get a little paranoid with so many things being canceled, the stores empty of people as well as some goods, people wearing masks made out of paper towels and handkerchiefs, patients waiting out in the parking lots rather than sitting in clinics' waiting rooms.  Tokyo Disneyland has announced that their gates will be closed for the rest of March and I think Universal Studios has closed their gates for another two weeks also.

Tetsu and I are giving some consideration to flying two weeks early to the States if we can... at least we'd be on the same side of the Pacific Ocean.  After talking 30 minutes, the four of us decided that we won't make any changes to our plans until the end of March...  two weeks away.  Tetsu is most concerned about Julieta and that she doesn't get too stressed out and upset.  (He recalls that I was pretty stressed before OUR wedding day and I didn't have to deal with a worldwide crisis!)  He asks that Takumi take good care of her, respect her feelings and try to make life as easy as possible for her.

And I look at my smiling son's face and think him such a positive and considerate young man.  I just want these two to be happy.
The speed in which things change is now hourly...  Pray and wait.  Pray and wait.

  2. So much to consider and a lot depends on the circumstances of this disease. Tetsu has such great advice and care for his son and future DIL. Tanya I really hope you get to the wedding (I'm a mother of 3 sons). No matter what happens your children know all your love is with them. God bless your family and try not to over stress. Saying a prayer for you and family. Patty McDonald

  3. On, Tanya, so sorry that this outbreak is happening when you should be celebrating Takumi and Julietta's marriage. In our area, they are closing down many activities and some schools are closing as well. My husband and I are trying to stick close to home since there are several in our area that have become ill. We also have a friend whose daughter is getting married at the end of the month and they are thinking that many guests will cancel. Rough times but, hopefully, we will get through with lots of prayer and trust in the Almmighty!

  4. What a gorgeous Lazo! Tetsu's concern for Julieta's well-being and happiness made my heart melt. These are interesting times we are living in. Pray and wait indeed.

  5. Yes, so much to think about Tanya. You are right, only Takumi, Julietta and God need be present but of course they want you two there as well for their wedding. If it is in your destinies to be there you will be. My daughter has a June wedding planned, still some time to reschedule if need be, the future is uncertain at the moment for most of the world. Today, the governor of North Carolina decreed'd a state of extreme emergency and forbade the gathering of 100 or more anywhere in the state for the foreseeable future. Tetsu is so very kind in his words to his son, Julieta has a gem of a father-in-law looking out for her. Blessings for you and your family Tanya, take care. Hugs from NC, KittyAnn

  6. Oh Tanya, I know how you feel. My kids have been busy trying to make plans for visits to all and everything is up in the air. I hate to ask them to just give up, but planning should not be so stressful. I keep hoping the pendulum will swing the other way before long and the lovely wedding will go as planned.. The American Club cancelled our scout meeting tonight with not enough time to find another place to meet. My hands are dry and flaky with so much washing and I'm glad I no longer have a large family to feed ... or supply with toilet paper.

  7. Dearest Tanya, You have been on my mind so much. I can empathize your feelings and worries about the upcoming wedding. I will keep you, Tetsu, Takumi, Julieta and all family members in my prayers.

Your kind heartedness is so wonderful. Tetsu's concern for Julieta and her stress level nearly brings tears to my eyes.

I wish I could offer some advice or ideas to help things be smoother for all of you. I send my love to all of you.

    Sincerely, Helen B, Ohio

  8. Dear Tanya, when the time comes, the right decision will be made, I feel for you. Thinking of you all. We are currently overseas, flying home next week, we have been vigilant with our hygiene but the decision to go ahead on our holiday was not easy. Your dress is beautiful and I hope you will get to wear it witnessing the love and marriage of Julieta and Takumi.

  9. Praying all goes well by the time you would be traveling. This situation is changing daily, so who knows what possible GOOD changes could start happening one day.

Instead of using up all your precious hand sanitizer (probably hard to replace when gone), try setting up an easy handwashing station at your door. We're doing this now, putting a pan of hot water with dish soap outside our back door, with another pan of clear rinse water and a towel. When we get done running our errands, we wash and rinse our hands before entering the house or touching the doorknob. Short errands, the water stays comfortably warm til we're back. You could set this up in a cooler chest if the weather was cold. You could also use an outdoor spigot and some nearby soap and towel.

I'm also taking along 2 wide-mouth jars in the back of my car, one soapy water and one rinse water, plus a towel. When I come out of a store, I wash my hands before I get in the car. Hand sanitizer is impossible to find here, and I never really feel as if my hands are clean when I use it. The soapy water feels better.

  10. We just don't know what will happen next. But we do know we are all in the hands of a loving God. I pray that this huge disruption of the entire world will bring a time of spiritual healing as we begin to understand more deeply how much we are connected, how much effect we have on one another, and as we begin to understand what is really important and what we can let go.
