Procrastinating and wasting time

It is June 1st in Japan.  BUT  it is still May 31 in California!  By my mother's timing, if I get my fabric post card in the mail today I'm not late!

Yeah... I procrastinated again and wound up frantically trying to figure out a fabric post card for May.  And the 30th and 31 fell on the weekend when Tetsu wanted to be out and about.  Grrr...  I mean I love doing things on weekends but we are so unplanned and unorganized that it is all I can do to keep from snapping at him (well, I did once!)

Shall I write about our weekend or my fabric post card first?  On Saturday Tetsu's "plan" was to go out to the rose festival, then stop at a home goods store, then go to a firework show in the next town over.  We enjoyed the roses and the Common Kingfisher.  We got to the home goods store but there was nothing we needed.  We were all gung-ho about meeting the camera people at the pond so we stopped at an electronics store to look at cameras.

"Tetsu, it is 4:00.  Don't we need to get to the fireworks show?"

"4:00?  It doesn't start until 7:00.  We have plenty of time."

Tetsu is planning to go to the States with me this summer and he thought he might like to take a camera.  A little pocket one?  A big black professional looking one?  We spent another hour looking at cameras but didn't buy anything.  Tetsu likes to look.  This is the third time we've looked at cameras.  By this time I was getting a bit annoyed with the "shopping".  We wander around these stores touching and reading labels (a trial for me) and never buy anything.

By 5:00 we headed for the next town and the fireworks show.  But it was a Saturday evening.  The roads are crowded anyway and the closer we got to the event location the less the cars moved until we were stuck at a stand still....  At 7:00 we were still stuck behind some buildings but the firework show went on as scheduled.  We HEARD it but that's all.  At that point our only goal was to get out of the line of cars and go home.  We made it home sometime after 8:00.

See...  I could have been home sewing and not regretting my procrastinating!

And then yesterday we spent more hours at an electronic store looking for a washing machine for Tetsu's mother.  But it was all opening lids and reading labels again with nothing to show for our efforts.  I just want to go home and sew now...

We went to the pool.

"30 minutes for a bath.  Let's skip the pool."

Fine by me, and I was sitting in the lobby in 20 minutes.  No Tetsu...  45 minutes later he showed up.

"Did I say 30 minutes?  I thought I said an hour..."

"I was ready to send the lifeguard in to see if you'd drowned in the bath!!!!!"

And that's why I didn't get my fabric post card finished on time.  (Disregarding the 29 earlier days in the month...)
For May's postcard I used a trial piece of the weaving that I did with Yuma-kun last week.  It wasn't really long enough and on the other hand, a bit too wide, BUT I CUT OFF THE EDGES!!!!  That feels almost sacrilegious but I did sew them down before cutting.  By the way...  Even Mrs. Furui knew about Yuma-kun's great-aunt the weaver and had visited her workshop.  It seems that I'm the only one who doesn't keep up with artists in our prefecture...

The butterflies are a tatting experiment that went awry.  I really don't know what I did wrong but I've somehow misunderstood the directions.  I made one butterfly, realized it wasn't made right, checked the pattern and tried it again and second one came out wrong too...  Maybe I'll give up on butterflies.  I figure my mother won't know the difference and they look pretty on the plain woven background.

May fabric postcard ready to send!

  2. Tanya, I would have gone bonkers long before the fireworks. In my early days I got so frustrated with that same kind of scheduling that to keep my sanity I now carry a book and some handwork. If I have to stand I read and if I can sit I do handwork. Waiting for a shopping husband I avoid like the plague. No thanks ... come get me when you are done!! Postcard is fine. butterflies come in a vast array of shapes and sizes.

  4. Do you send your mother's postcards in an envelope, or as a traditional postcard? I am noticing that my mother is no longer checking her email. My kids, her grandkids, have begun mailing her letters. I am ready to do as you do.
