After one of my Wednesday English classes (playtime) at the kindergarten, a little boy came up to me and whispered shyly.
"Thank you...."
"What? Say that again..."
"THANK YOU.... BED COVER."
Bed cover? Oh! The bed cover! This was the little boy who won the raffle quilt this year and his mother, knowing that he would have English that day, had obviously tutored him in saying thank you... And he remembered to! I gave him a big hug and let him know how happy I was that he had won the quilt. I think it is the first time a child has come to say thank you to me specially. Many of the kindergarten mothers only know me as the English teacher and probably don't realize I am involved in the raffle quilt each year.

Yesterday at our patchwork gathering one friend told us about a conversation she had overheard when buying her raffle tickets at the bazaar. There were so many raffle prizes this year, all made by a craft group of kindergarten mothers. But our Cake Walk quilt was given the honor of being the grand prize again this year.
"Isn't it gorgeous! The colors are so vibrant! It really is a beauty!"
"Yes, that group does such beautiful work. And I hear that they are all over 50!"
Come to think of it, the kindergarten mothers are looking younger and younger every year!
We "over 50s" have decided to attempt another quilt for next year's raffle. I guess we'd better do it while we can!
"Over 50". I am 53, and feel like I am 33. I embrace my friends on either side of the decade balance, and that is what puzzles me this very week: our church sent out a note that congregants 55 and over can go to some Christmas celebration in December. I surely do not wish to be pigeon-holed into an old-age group. I don't think anyone does. And to top this off, another article in the SAME church note discussed "the elderly". I'm a'thinkin' not many of us, 50+ or 80+, like to be referred to as elderly.

Oh Tanya, The quilt is beautiful and is a work of art!!!! How nice of the little fellow to thank you, that makes it all worth while. Keep up the wonderful work.
ReplyDeleteThis made me smile. I've never cared to be defined by my age, and found it hard coming to terms with being 60 a few years ago, when I became officially 'old'. I qualified for my state pension and bus pass; I got concessionary prices at cinemas, theatres and other entertainments. And if I'd found myself in the newspapers, would have been described as a 'pensioner'. I may have a few more aches and pains these days but I certainly don't feel as if I'm old.

ReplyDelete50 doesn't seem so old any more! You keep going and that is really a gorgeous quilt. It is nice to be thanked too. That doesn't happen often enough these days.
ReplyDeleteHa! I love it. I explain to the "youngin's now-a-days" that with age comes the wonderful opportunity to experience and learn many things. Take advantage of all of those opportunities and you'll be very happy as you become one of us old folks.
ReplyDeleteTanya, that is so very funny. I couldn't help but laugh. Your group does such beautiful work. I guess it is because you have so many years experience. Just this past year I have noticed how young the fabric designers are now. It seems this happened all of a sudden; the modern quilt era has begun. Numbers don't matter, it is how you feel inside. Though I do really think our generation is not as "old" as our mothers' were at our age.
