Mola project

I am not getting any QUILTS made.  I am doing small projects; making postcards, tatting, weaving, quilting, making mola blocks, but not getting any finished quilts under my belt!  There will be a sorry inventory at the end of the year if I don't set my mind to it!  But life is not about the NUMBER of things I get done is it...

So I hand quilt and I continue to make those mola blocks (that I wasn't planning to make).

I now have 5 small mola blocks.  The patterns are from an old Japanese magazine and they are taken from the Chinese horoscope... which I've never in my life given a thought to but they were pretty little patterns.
I really wasn't going to go this far with this particular project as evidenced by the fact that I am running out of fabric.  The green "grass" fabric scrap was merely a scrap and I've run out of that so I had to switch to another color of green half-way through the year of the mouse.  (and can you tell that I even short changed myself on the original fabric and had to do some patching in the hills...)

By the way, all these figures are supposed to have another layer of tiny black pieces over the inner triangles, circles, rectangles in the animal figures but I determined that that was going to try my patience too far...  I'm not adding more black.
Except for the year of the chicken...  My chicken seemed to have to have that center black to pull the "feathers" together...  The chicken has been by far the most difficult of the patterns to do (because of that black!)  I sure hope I don't run into any more intricacies...

And no...  It isn't the camera lighting that accounts for the slight shift in red color.  I ran out of red fabric too and had to make an emergency trip to the fabric shop.  How impossible do you think it is to match reds!  (Especially considering the original red fabric was fabric I'd bought in the States for something.)  I will not be a perfectionist and this shade of red came the closest.  Not a bad match...
Except when all the blocks are side by side...  Ah well, hopefully I will be adding more blocks to this and the one stand-out block will have companions in the same shade... seven more companions if I stick with this project...

Mola in 2017!

  1. Maybe it looks different in person. On my computer they are very close! Nice work!

  2. I can't see any difference in the red, either. You are getting your fair share of practice and will be a Master of Mola before the end of 2017. I haven't even started, sigh!

  3. My computer monitor can't tell the difference between them either. So probably wouldn't be obvious if they were hanging on a wall. Such intricate work, I could never do that!

  5. I'm sure I'd never have your patience to work on these so I applaud your diligence. They are adorable and your finished project will be amazing.
Congratulations on persevering in learning a new technique!

  7. They look really good altogether. and I don't see a difference on the computer.

as for your productivity on the quilt quota, just think of it as a sort of holiday/vacation from producing quilts. The ones in the queue will not go off! when they become the focus again, you will still find them there.

PS you usually blog about the starts, so if you can't remember where you were going with them, you can come see what you told us. ;-)

  8. My mola is far behind. I like the idea of the 12 years of animals. Of course, it might take me twelve years if I tried it. The Yayoi Kusama exhibit had lots of art that made me think of mola ideas.
